Origin
Do you believe in god? I know he exists. I’ve seen him, spoken with him… but I’ve lost all faith in him.

_________________________________________________
Cretheus was never a high ranking angel. There is no room for advancement in the celestial hierarchy, not for angels at least. You are what you were created to be, you do what you were created to do and that was simply the way it was.

Every so often though, someone upset the status quo. First there was the great war. The Archangel Satan somehow decided he would rebel against his creator, the war was bloody and ended with the fall of some two hundred… it was terrible… God in his infinite wisdom decided to allow Satan to live, to tempt his fledgling children. Satan’s army became the first and worst demons that would plague mankind.

But everyone knows that story.

There is another. An angel who’s task it was to walk among men and simply watch. He grew weary. Sickened to the very core at the atrocities man committed. Disgusted that God would forgive them. It poisoned him, twisted his mind… until he finally snapped. He decided to take the lives of truly evil mortals before they had a chance to repent, sending them to hell before God could forgive them. He quickly grew more bold, killing men for the slightest indiscretion.

God saw fit to send an angel to stop him and bring him back to be judged. That angel was Cretheus. Although back then he went by a different name, it’s been lost to the ages. Cretheus descended from the heavens and confronted this wayward angel.

The two fought an epic battle, one fighting in the name of his Lord, the other fighting for his own twisted beliefs. It lasted for many days, in the end they were both evenly matched, one never able to get an edge over the other. When the two came to this realization they ceased combat, and began a war of words. Cretheus could not fathom the depths that this angel had fallen. He wished to understand, to try and convince him to return to the heavens, perhaps God would forgive him.

They received an answer. The earth opened up beneath them and swallowed them both. It was similar to the punishment God gave Azazel for his part in teaching man forbidden knowledge. Trapped within the earth, in a lightless prison, impaled on sharp rocks and spikes until the end of times.

The fallen angel could not help but let out a long anguished laugh. Cretheus was not so lucky. One of the spikes had pierced through his jaw, pinning his mouth closed. He could not speak, only moan in misery, left to question why he shared this angel’s fate. Millennia passed like this. They remained awake for quite some time, Cretheus forced to listen to his enemy berate him for his blind faith, laughing at his tears and his misery.

Every day Cretheus prayed, asking God why he was trapped with the fallen one. He never received an answer. Slowly, over several lifetimes, Cretheus grew dark. Hatred crept into his heart and corrupted him. He remained awake far longer than his companion. Left in darkness. Left alone. Left in constant agony, unable to move. Left to his thoughts.

Then, a miracle. Their prison was discovered. They both had long since grown still in the darkness. Taken for study, then put on display. It was the find of the century, two almost perfectly preserved bodies from some ancient civilization. The fallen woke first and terrorized Paragon City. He was quickly apprehended.

Mortals scrambled to restrain the second body, terrified they had unearthed some ancient evil. But even then it was not enough. They bound him with spells made to confine all manor of evil spirits and demons. They never considered the possibility he was an angel.

When Cretheus finally did wake up, he found he was still incarcerated, only in a completely different place. Bound hand and foot with heavy shackles covered in glowing runes, he sat in a deep depression. He didn’t even feel the need to try and escape. He was lost in a completely different world. His entire reason for being had betrayed him.
It wasn’t until several years later that he got his first taste of freedom. The prison he was held at was attacked and his cell was damaged. They weren’t there for him, but during the commotion he heard a familiar voice. That voice that tormented him for so long. It stirred something deep inside him and gave him purpose. He new he couldn’t fight in his current state, so he waited until the intruders left before he made his own escape.

He’s found purpose finally. He will find that fallen angel and make him pay. Everything else in between will just make him stronger.

Now you know my story. Do you pity me? Do you think me weak? It doesn’t matter. Are you afraid of me? There’s no need to be scared. I’ll give you time to repent. Pray for His forgiveness, you’ll be seeing him soon enough.
