| My experience with MMOGs |
7/3/04 - 10:51 |
I may have only played one MMOG before COH but I know what it takes to bring people back. An endless grind will just bore people, the one reason people come back to SWG is they love to roleplay in the Star Wars Universe. For some people roleplay just isn't enough when theres a massive grind everytime you want to change professions. The grind in SWG is what drove me away. The community is great in SWG but who wants to pay 15 dollars for chat.
Now back to COH. I know I might sound like a "fanboy" when I say this but where other MMOGs fail for the casual fan COH succeeds. The casual player are what makes up a large number of people that play MMORPGs and MMOFPSs and Crytic really catered to that group of people. You can be a newbie and get right in game and the action begins. Theres no big learning curve, you can log in and right off the bat you are having fun.
Now my point is SWG is fun for the hardcore gamer and COH seems fun for mostly casual gamers. The penalty for games like SWG is greater because you have to worry about object decay and in COH all you really need to worry aout is debt. Debt can be worked off but in SWG after awhile if you want your armor to be effective after dying a few time you either need to repair it or buy new armor. This is too much for some gamers and this is where COH picks up the slack. |
