| My History |
I had a short stint in Quake 3 but it just wasn’t my game. I played with u238 through two CPL events in both teamplay and 1v1 but didn’t go very far.
The only moment of Quake 3 history worth mentioning was Razer CPL making a mistake with my qualifier and placing me in the first match of the tournament (seed 256) against the former champion, Hakeem. I learned a valuable lessen from that game and it’s helped me ever since.
When you get the misfortune of having to play the top seeded player in the world in the first round of a tournament on two 9x16 foot projection screens in front of 4,000 gamers you tend to get nervous. You’ll get even more nervous when they tell you that you’re playing in 15 minutes. Being that I qualified rather strongly I wouldn’t have expected to play for another 4 hours (and neither did any of my friends that were asleep in the hotel room) but alas, I had to play in 15 minutes.
In FPS competitive games of the highest level, 30% of the game is mental. If your opponent’s hands are shaking because he is too nervous then you’re pretty much assured a victory. My hands were shaking. While going into the game and warming up with the Swedish Champion didn’t make me feel any better about the situation I had to pull out all the stops and try to get comfortable. To do this, I needed to comment that “USA Rules” a few times before the game started.
The game started and I was too nervous to hit a rocket to save my life (which is ironic because it was my best weapon). Since his strat revolved around taking away the RL, I ended up using the Railgun almost exclusively. This worked out to my advantage as I shot around 70% rail in that game (well, it felt like that at least). I ended up losing the game 9-18 but everyone remembered my name as ‘the guy who almost upset the champion in the first game of the tournament’.
The true irony was that if I had been placed accordingly in the brackets, I may have made it past the first game but the second game would have to have met with an embarrassing end against a real competitor. I was never that good to begin with.
After realizing Quake 3 wasn’t my game, I ended up retiring for a while then coming back to Quake 2 to form Team Demise.
