Huxley E3 Review - WEBZEN |
Much like our SUN experience WEBZEN proved to be extremely busy and we were unable to lock down an appointment even after a barrage of emails, phone calls, and a face to face visit at their booth. We were instead left to experience the game ourselves but sometimes, that’s the best way to determine how well new gamers will respond to a title the first time they have a chance to play. You can read all about everything we found in Huxley below…
Graphics
The graphics seemed very clean and were impressive for how many models WEBZEN claims to be able to support on the screen at once. These graphics are not comparable to current FPS games however since the number of players and the size of the map for current FPS titles are a LOT smaller. Huxley aims to be an MMOFPS creating Epic battles with far more combatants than is currently available in FPS games.
Questing
The demo did not have any questing. In fact the only thing that was possible was a force on force objective based PvP map.
Gameplay
Huxley’s gameplay was much like what you would expect from an FPS but seemed to lack the intensity found in other FPS titles. It played much like a 1v1 battle on an 8v8 map. You are presented with an enormous map but there is no map key or view of the entire map. That is to say, you have no idea where you are in relation to anyone aside from your mini map which covers probably around 5% at a time, if that. I spent the majority of my time trying to actually find where the combat was occurring rather than engaged in combat. It was very frustrating…
During the battle, each character had only one skill to use; I was given the ability to see how much life an opponent had. If you are any reasonably good FPS player, this ability should not be needed. The only benefit to having this skill is when coming across players in the middle of a gunfight and being able to pick off someone with very little life. Something which may, in the end, piss off your teammates… especially if experience is gained from scoring kills.
The weapon choices were very basic and lacked variety. I was given a rocket launcher, machine gun, and sniper rifle all of which functioned as you would expect. Vehicles were also available on the map and looked very cool. I was unable to figure out what the key was to board a vehicle however and after asking everyone around me, including the other players, I eventually gave up… maybe operating vehicles is class depedant?
Character Progression
Huxley did not demonstrate any character progression system. The official site claims you can enhance your combat style by obtaining “out-of-this-world” weapons and new skills but I was unable to find any WEBZEN rep that was knowledgeable about this feature.
Gear
Once again, I was not able to locate any gear in the game to improve your character or find anyone who was knowledgeable on the subject. There are however five categories of equipment; helmet, body, belt, gloves, and boots. Add to that weapon and that’s the extent of what you get.
Overall
Overall I was disappointed in the title. I have long been awaiting an MMOFPS and I had very high hopes with Huxley; especially with an Xbox 360 launch in the works. To sum it all up, I ended up walking away from the middle of a match disappointed and bored. If you are in the market for an MMOFPS, I highly recommend looking to Tabula Rasa who definitely nailed down the genre for what it is and brings action packed FPS gameplay to a true MMO world. |
