Gods and Heroes E3 Review - Perpetual Entertainment

Gods & Heroes came as a huge surprise this year to E3. Perpetual Entertainment has done an outstanding job at keeping this award winning title under wraps. When I first walked by the monitors displaying this title, I thought it was a console game. When I had a chance to get up close and get a walk through demo from Stieg, the lead game designer, I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. The gameplay in this title is mind boggling and shows that there is a new style of skills and spell the world has never seen from an MMORPG.

Graphics

Second only to gameplay, the graphics in this game are outstanding. Not only is the modeling and texturing superb but all of the mythological creatures you can possible remember (and all of those you can’t) have been incorporated into Gods & Heroes. Attention to detail when gaining a level or God Power show this game to be a masterpiece of the genre. When attacking your opponents your character model will actually look like he or she is in combat. Parrying, blocking, parrying, shield bashing, all of these things actually have animations which interact with your opponent. Hand to hand combat or even wrestling style moves which actually play out between the character models. I have never seen anything remotely close to this in any MMORPG that has ever been created.

Questing

With only a quick demo to be seen, I was not afforded the opportunity to play through the game and so my knowledge on questing is limited. I did learn however that some quests will allow you to gain God Powers. During the character creation process you will actually decide to align yourself with one god. This god will give you specific quests that will earn you favor in the God’s eyes. Earn enough favor and he will begin to bestow God Powers onto you.

Gods and Heroes ScreenshotAround 65% of the game is seamless world with the remainder in instanced quest areas. An interesting thing to note, some higher level raid content will actually only involve three player characters. The three player characters will also get to bring along 8 minions each.

Gameplay

Gods and Heroes is all about the gameplay. Bringing an immersive world right to your front door and beckoning you in with colorful graphics and a level of control over minions you have never seen from any game before. In Gods and Heroes you have the ability to have minions or henchmen. As you gain in levels the amount of minions you can have also grows. The planned cap is eight for minions. At higher levels these minions may not even be human! Instead you may gain Minotaur and other mythological humanoids.

In addition to just having minions you get an unprecedented level of control over them. Starting from the formation they travel in while adventuring with you. Not only can you choose from a predefined selection of formations, but you can also completely customize and save you own formations. Once you have your formation selected you can also select the response type for each monster when in combat. These will also differ depending upon the class of the minion. For instance healer classes may be set to “heal only” while fighter classes may be set to; “hold your ground” or “attack on sight”.

All of these features and more factored into GameAmp delivering Gods and Heroes the Best Gameplay of 2006 E3 Award and once you are able to get a more in-depth look first hand, we’re sure you’ll agree.

Character Progression

Character progression plays a large role in Gods & Heroes. From picking up new skills to adding new minions to opening up new quests and instanced areas character progressions is truly important. The gear you find will often times be level dependant

Gear

From the demo I was unable to get a good look at the variety of gear besides what was shown on the character. A small choice of weapons was shown but from the looks of things there is a TON already created even pre-beta. Each class looks distinctly different due to their armor and weapon types and if we’re grouping minions into the gear than we’ll be opening up a whole slew of new options.

Minions, at least at higher levels, needn’t be human. While most minions will indeed be humans each with their own subset of skills (i.e. hand to hand combat, armed melee, offensive spells, defensive spells, and healing) higher level minions can even be mythological creatures. Minotaur were available in the demo and they can really lay a beat down on your opponents.

Gods and Heroes ScreenshotIn addition to minions, you’ll also find plenty of gear, and combined with the gorgeous graphics of Gods & Heroes it’s guaranteed to keep even the most promiscuous of loot whores occupied. To sum it all up in one quick blurb; the gear in Gods and Heroes looks top notch.

Overall

Winner of the GameAmp’s 2006 Best Gameplay of E3 Award is a serious title for us to hand out and we hope it carries a good bit of weight with you too. Gods and Heroes looks to be a creative, fun, and addictive title for anyone who has even remotely liked Greek / Roman Mythology. Just from the demo you can tell the guys (and girls) over at Perpetual Entertainment have put in a ton of research hours, digging up every last piece of mythology and cramming it all into one solid title. From Gods and Heroes down to the common peasant loitering around the streets this game feels like you are living inside a long ago land which was really ruled the gods of old.
