hi, I am new to dnd as a whole and only played rpgs video games so I am really confused as to tell what makes certain weapons and armor better than others to use in this game...I kind of understand that a masterwork is better than a regular and a +1 is better than a masterwork but any other info would be helpful. Also, what are the armor peneltys for? thanks

aye the +'s make an item better.. Also there are other attributes for weapons such as.. fire it does an additional 1d6 fire damage every hit.. There are many many other attributes as well.. I can go into more detail if you would like..
Armor penalties represent the negative you get to skills.. Full plate will lower your ability to move silently cuase your sneaking in full plate.. thunk.. thunk.. thunk.. as you walk.. generally these are not anything to worry about cause if your wearing full plate you prolly didnt put many points into a dex based skill...

1d8 is better with a 1 die 6 max damage is 6 per se with the 8 max damage is higher. Some probability expert may have a different opinion about a law of averages but most would agree a chance at 8 is better. Ok my 1d2 cents worth. :)

If you want to really get into the weeds, this armor/weapon thing can become very complicated very quickly. Here's a nice post:
