Past and Future Visions

Strictly speaking this isn't news, since this item is about two decades into the past and one decade into the future.

The first is a Visual Histroy of MMORPGs (first part) hosted at Massively.com which shows a nice overview of the genre, starting with the first MUD, created by Richard Bartle and Roy Trubshaw back in 1978 (told you it was two decades) up to around the time Everquest hits the scene in 1999. Presumably, that will get a viewing in part2. But for a quick timeline of that classic, check here.

But this is all preface for Richard Bartle's (who is indeed the same Bartle as from the famous Bartle Test which many Developers still use to define players by) Keynote speech at IMGDC 2008, in which he sets out three brilliant though sometimes scary visions of how MMORPG's will evolve in the next ten years or so.
Best of all, he posted his Slides online!

I would invite you all to look at the pretty pictures by Massively and then read through Richard Bartle's Slides, if only to find out how he managed to link MMORPG's to two of the best things to come out of the seventies, namely the Muppets and Debbie Harry. Once you're done, I'd like you to share your thoughts on the past and future of MMORPGs here.

RE: Past and Future Visions

I love MMORPGS, and I think they will be in my life forever. The community it hollows is incredible, and I think that being able to be in contact with people in this fashion is just amazing. I really enjoy it. *sniffle*

RE: Past and Future Visions

The history of old MMO games is a bit lost on me. I have played a MUD for a while in the early 90's. But from there I jumped straight to the post EQ area. Outdated looking games might bring back memories to same, but to me they are just outdated looking games.

The future is way more interesting. And the slides that Richard Bartle made are great stuff! Personally I am a bit less optimistic than he is. I think lawyers, businessmen (= the investors) will get more and more say into things. Especially when it comes to many multi million investments which are MMO's these days. The last 5 MMO's I have tried basically all canned. That means close to 100 million of losses. This can only mean lawyers and business will get a bigger say in things.

But this year will be interesting. Age of Conan and Warhammer Online will prove me right or wrong. I just think I now belong to a too small group of players that liked the way games were 5-10 years ago. I think MMO's will become more and more about fast gratification. Just like our entire society. That is where the investors think the money is. And they are probably right. I just not what I want.

RE: Past and Future Visions

This is where I started my online gaming career: http://mirkwoodmud.org/

That went on for many many years and is still up and running! (I just discovered that)

After Mirkwood, I came to CoH...then to WoW...then back to CoH...then back to WoW. Now I'm resolved to stay with CoH until the bitter end...which is hopefully a long way away.
