Monster Photo Contest

Here are the official rules for the Monster Photo Contest:

Prizes:

1st Place – 75,000 Gold / 750 Credibility
2nd Place – 50,000 Gold / 500 Credibility
3rd Place – 25,000 Gold / 250 Credibility

Rules for the Monster Photo Contest are as follows:

Your photo count is dependant on how many UNIQUE monsters you photograph. More than one photograph per individual monster will not be counted towards your total.
Monster photos submitted between the dates of 8/1/2005 – 8/31/2005 will count toward a user’s photo count.
Guild Wars GameAmp staff are ELIGIBLE for this contest. Since there will be no approval process for the addition of these monster photos, staff members do not have an unfair advantage.
Monsters must be photographed in close range and the monster type should be obvious upon view.
Photos may be removed from your total count if they are not properly cropped and/or resized to 200 width.
Malicious uploads, multiple images uploaded under the wrong monster and any form of illegitimate posting will be subject to disqualification of the user who posted them.

Where do I upload my monster pictures?
>On the site we have a Monster Section. This monster section lists out the different kinds of monsters for each Monster Group. You can click on an individual monster, such as Charr Ash Walker and find information and images associated with that monster.

What if my monster isn't in the database?
>If you have a Monster that is not found in our database, please post its Class, Monster Group, Name, Level and if it is a boss on this thread. Our admins will add it as soon as possible.

Should I PM an admin or Post my problem in this thread?
>If you have a problem, please post it in this thread. PM's are sometimes over-looked. The more admins who see your missing monster or problem, the quicker your solution will come.

What Image software will help me with resizing, cropping, converting and manipulating my monster images?
>Adobe Photoshop is my personal favorite. Paint.net I believe does the job as well as many downloadable freeware image software packages.

Any modifications to the contest or rules will be edited on this post.

Just to give another visual about cropping and its requirements for the contest...

Cropping allows you to select a small portion of the picture you have and create a new image from it. This allows you to focus on a monster and get a "close up".

For example, lets take this image:

If I wanted to get the troll to the right of me, I would crop the troll and isolate him in the picture. I would use the Crop tool and make a box around the troll. I then applied a resize of 200 width by going into the image drop down and selecting image size. After applying the crop & the resize my image would look like this:

This should give you an idea of what is to be expected for the imagery in the contest. The first image alone would not be acceptable (even if simply resized). We are looking for cropped and resized photos.

Is it ok if your picture has two of the same monster in the same place?..They often get clumped together <_<

Silly question -> What's better? using the screenshot function ingame, or using a image capturing software like Snagit?

I find Prnt Screen works just fine for these purposes.

The images should be located in your Guildwars/Screens directory. (or /screenshots)

By default it goes to something like: c:/program files/guildwars/screenshots

I can't confirm because I customized but that should get you searching in the right place.

My computer, maybe standard, saves the pictures in bmp
a quite heavy file, but maybe more clear image.

When I fix them up to right size I also save them as jpg before uploading.

Is this okay, or you rather want the original and more space consuming format?

Anyways this is hella fun : P Charging into a group of monsters, putting down the sword and taking out your camera and trying to make them pose in best possible position before you health runs out.

PS:
I'm not completely into what the terms you use are, like cropped. I'm danish and my programs are in danish. I do think they are sized and made pretty much like what other people upload, but please PM or add here if I use wrong format or havent 'cropped'.

PPS:
I looked up 'crop' in my fine Advanced Learners Dictionary it says cutting things way from pictures.
I interpret this as cutting everything else away except the monster that you are photographing. I hope this might answer people with same question.

Yea, like shadows from fow(enchanted?), the bulls from uw(minotaurs?),sand elementals(golems?), phantoms/grapsing darkness and i'm sure theres a few more but thats all i can think of at the time =/

also.. does beastmater go into the summit dwarves or the doylak catagory?

So, the rules mention 200 pixel width and nothing about height, but when you upload your pic it asks for it in 200 X 200 format, so that's what I've been doing. What about all these people uploading pics that are much bigger than 200 in height? Does it matter?

Also, for all of you that don't know..if you hold down shift and then hit print screen it takes away all the status bars, powers and such and automatically briefly puts it on the highest graphical settings. Makes for a much nicer screenshot. I may not win this, but I'd still like the place to look nice.

LOL - Agreed - The idea of asking the Mobs to hold on a sec and group around for a photo opp is a rather funny image in my head ROFL !!!!

Click Here to go to the monster database. Find your monster and there will be a submit pic button..

okay to answer almost every question i saw:

1. how do you resize image?

if you are running windows xp, simply right click the file and click resize pictures. click advanced and select custom. Enter the dimensions you want and press ok. it will resize and save to the same folder the original picture was in.

2. how do you change to JPEG?
right click the file and click edit. It will open in Windows Paint. Click file, save as. on the bottom there is a dropdown menu. Click it and select JPEG. and press save.

3. How do you take screenshot?
while in game, hold down shift and press the Print Screen button. Near your scroll lock button on top right of your keyboard. It will be saved to... C:program filesGuild WarsScreens (unless you changed directory when you were installing). Then simply crop, resize, convert and upload.

4. How do you crop?
open the file in Windows paint as i said in question 2. Here use the morq tool (looks like a dotted rectangle) and select the part of the picture you want. Click Edit, Cut. then File, new. and paste.

5. Where do you upload your picture?
Ill just quote nogame on this one.

Any Admin Please:

I couldn't think of anywhere better to post it because if we had a problem, it said to post here. I accidentally posted a lava imp where I meant to post the Ettin Boss Vulg Painbrain. So after, I did post the correct image as well. I hope there is no pentalty, figured it'd be harsh if there was seeing as how it was an accident, not abuse. Can you please remove the imp picture from the ettins section, I did not see any way to do it myself. Thank you, sorry for the trouble.

most of my photos are like 77kb and you only allow 75kb is there a way to change the size of the file? in mass quantaties?
or can you just allow maybe like 100 kb per photo?
