| Important question about the Demo |
|
|
|
One thing I truly loved with the old Dungeon Siege 1 was that you began at the lowest step possible with your character. He/She had nothing more than the clothes on his/her back, a simple hay-fork/bow/nature- / combat spell to fight with. You began progressing in the game; One of the first "additional armor" you found were a couple of shoes a couple of minutes into the plot. From there, you slowly built up your character, found/bought more armor, new weapons/spells, decided upon hiring companions and it all developed one bit at a time, just how you wanted it to.
Now, the demo of DS2 puts you straight into the action. You already have your character equipped with armor, weapons of different choices and even a magic medallion around his/her/its neck. Not to mention the allied friend you have by your side.
Sure, the demo is amazing in all aspects from the beautiful graphics to the compelling soundeffects and on-screen tools/menus. But the fact that you were put straight into the action with no room for "developing" your character (other than the character-creation step) - that put me off a little bit - since I just love the beginning part of RPG- and Aventure games, the way that DS1 served you.
Sure, I can believe that the demo of DS2 tells another story, not reflecting how the full game will begin, since such a beginning wouldn't really show off as much as this "instant action" setting you see in the DS2 demo.
My question is if you know or whether or not you believe that this is how the full game will start or if this is a "mid-part" of the full game or a completely separate setting, only for the demo ?
I'm sorry if this question is answered within the Demo documentation or something, in that case I just happened to miss that part.
Thanks for your time !

I'm going to wager a guess that this is how the game will start and develop. The reason being is that the quest log stays on ACT 1 (out of 3 i believe) the entire time and since all the level requirements are shown on each quest its a pretty good bet that they won't deviate too much from it.
I never really thought about it before but you're right. I did like that feeling of starting with nothing and finding bits and pieces of armor along the way. I would say though that what I have seen from the loot system makes me very happy about the sequal and since the demo doesn't let you progress too far into the game it's hard for me to rate the storyline.
I'm still avidly awaiting the release date on the 17th.

I think the beginning was, after playing the BETA versino for some time, a bit shocking.
But the demo beginning is the gameīs beginning.
I also like the "humble farmer" start in DSI, but this works just fine for me, since when you get do Eurilan it all slows down and you get your time to really start.
I belive thatīs the way Chris & Co wants you to feel, it is supossed to have that "harsch" start.
The Storyline feels A Lot better.
In DSI i got a "get-out-and-get-moving-as-fast-as-you-can-to-the-next-town"-feeling. And that was kinda boring.
They have changed this is two way now:
1. Quests givers want you to go back and forth between cities(at least a bit, thats the feeling i get)
2. There are so many more caves, alternative routes and hidden areas to explore, around the cities.
Great game.
Sorry for spelling misstakes.

That is true... now the game is less linear (you move on to the next town from the previous town) and you get to teleport back and forth between locations based on your quest status.
In DS1 you didn't look back unless it was for XP or Grinding. DS2 gives you many reasons to go back and explore those areas of the game you may have already passed up.

Well, that is some very appreciated info !
Yeah, that was one big thing I didn't like about DS1 - I felt that it was too linear. Sure, it was fun to do a couple of "cleaning-returns" but that didn't cut it more than twice !
Now, the ability to pick up lots of less important sidequests and see some alternate events besides the main storyline, that will surely sweaten things up, a LOT ! Such things adds plenty of hours to such games for me, since I like to explore as much as possible before the whole thing is over.
I have also come to see that things do seem to pace down a bit into the demo. I haven't been able to play too much during the week so I've just gotten to that city and am currently (locked in ?) in what seems to be some sort of holding cell or something. Gonna go at it in a moment. That's exactly what I was looking for, an opportunity to start from scratch with my character !
(I KNEW DS2 wouldn't let me down !!! ;p )
Anyway, the demo have made me look forward to DS2 even more and I hope that there will be a huge phat paper-manual for it too ! =)
You have any shareable info regarding any possible manuals Pedigree ?

--- MINOR DEMO SPOILER AHEAD ---
Thanks for the reply !
I've had a few spare minutes this weekend for the DS2 demo. Let's see, I've been given a mission to burn those towers and just managed to "fool" my way to the first of them. (They've just opened the gate for me and given me a password.)
Could anybody tell me how far I have come through the DS2 demo ? Am I like half way there or have I seen nothing yet... ?
I just can't believe how incredible this sequel is, in EVERY aspedct ! I am completely blown away by the great and improved graphics, the "new fresh feel" of the gameplay, the amazing sound and that new feature with the Chants, that one kicks butt !
I like the setting very much too. The woods were a fun part to work through in the beginning of DS1, only problem that it was too linear - it felt like I was progressing my way through a maze or something. Here in DS2, it's much more fun. I've been scouting lots of different sidetracks, found a few secrets as well as that cool tower where you go down the elevator and get to pick a door corresponding to your chosen "proffession" etc. Put all these new aspects together and, for me, it comes together as a, I don't know, some sort of "Cozy" feeling when playing and experiencing it.
They also copied the entire death-works from Diablo 2 (leaving a gravestone at the death-site, which is spawned to the start (except the gold) if you quit the game) - I personally feel that this is a good way of taking care of the dying. And the more I play the demo, the better it feels. I'm really getting to know the layout of the tools and different screens. Now it's not so confusing any more, instead I'm beginning to feel right at home, just like I did with DS1.
--- A LITTLE SIDE-NOTE ---
Yeah, tell me I'm a little bit "after" on this, but I really had no idea ! I was on IMDB, checking what other movies were featuring mr. Jason Statham (lead actor in "The Transporter (1 & 2)) and I saw an upcoming title, nothing less than... "Dungeon Siege" (2006). Briefly I thought he just did a voice or something in an upcoming DS export for the X-Box or PS2, but soon came to realize that they're actually making a movie (probably based on the first DS) since Krugs will be starring.
I can't have too high hopes for this flick though, since most "game-movies" are more or less unsuccessful (except for the first Resident Evil which you either love or hate, and I loved it) - but you can always hope that they'll do something good with this.
For you who might be even more behind than I am; here's a link to the movie on IMDB:

You're not very far into the demo at all. You've got about 2/3 of the demo to complete.
Ya... i dunno about that Dungeon Siege movie... but it does have one of my favorite female actresses (well, she's great to look at anyway). I'll wait for the video.... nay, the HBO debut... nay... the public television release!

but still, dont quit after you have come to the end instead:
Try a new race, develope new skills, use new spells , use pets, learn how to control a party in battle.. i dont know but i bevile that i will get to keep my character into the game. At least i hope so. :)
I have probably done the demo 10 times and the BETA 10 times, and itīs always as fun(but the BETA was funnier with more bosses respawning, but more bugs)

I need to go pick up a copy myself, all this talk about DEMOs!
I haven't played it yet and I'd at least like to know what I'm doing when it comes out :)

Yes, I'm certainly planning on playing through the demo more than once (as many times as spare-time will let me). This first time I'm going through the demo as a basic fighter (since I believe that a basic fighter class usually gives you the easiest gameplay). That way I can get well acquainted with the game before I'll probably try playing through it with nature- or combat magic (magic class which usually can be a bit harder to master).
I am also meaning to take my time and read through all the help-sections (or instructions) written in the in-game journal. Yes, I happen to be one of the gaming-world's manual freaks who can't get myself to even INSTALL a game before I've read its manual (front to back) - no matter how basic, simple and easily understandable a game is. I NEED to read the manual first ! I can't just bear the thought of sitting there, playing, spending hours to try and accomplish something which I could've managed in a few seconds if I'd read the manual.
I wonder if PRIMA will release a strategy guide for DS2 (seen nothing about DS2 on their homepage yet). Those books are like christmas and birthdays put together for me ! =)
Well, I'm off to play some more now.
Readya later !
