| Weird RAM + Battlefield 2 problem |
|
|
|
G'day all
Ok i have a really weird problem with 2 x 512MB Sticks of 512MB DR400 and Battlefield 2. The problem is I cannot join a LAN game of Battlefield 2. Just before u click on join game I get booted back to the desktop. The specs of the machine are as follows:
O/S : Windows Media Centre
Mobo: Epox 8k9a2+
CPU : Athlon 2k (palomino)
RAM : 2 x 512MB Elixir DDR400
G/C : Radeon 9600XT (256MB)(VIVO)
HDD : 120G WD
P/S : 500W
I can play a single game. I can CREATE a LAN game and play, I can join an Internet game and play, although within the internet game i did get booted back to the desktop, but it only happened once in the hour i played.
If I take one of the RAM sticks out (dosent matter which one) and go to join a LAN game i CAN play???.
I put Both RAM sticks into my other machine and the same problem exists. The specs for my second machine is:
O/S : Windows Media Centre
Mobo: Asus A7V600-X
CPU : Athlon 2100 @ 2700
RAM : as above
G/C : Radeon 9500
HDD : 80G WD
P/S : 400W
Other tests i have done are as follows:
reinstalled Windows Media Centre
Flashed the BIOS (8k9a2+)
Changing speed of RAM from 400 to 333 to 266
I put 3 x 512MB Sticks of DDR RAM and the same problem exists.
Also i am upto date with Battlefield 2's patch v1.02.
I just have no clue asto wtf is going on. So I would REALLY appreciate it if someone could throw some light on this matter. It's just crazy that my RAM sticks will allow me to do everything but join a LAN game.
Thanking everyone in advance

what makes you so sure it's your RAM? I've never heard of RAM interfering with ANY game ANY time unless the RAM size is insufficient for the game. 1-1.5 gb shouldnt be the issue. Try running the game with minimum system processes, sp2 processes will occasionally interfere with the game, especially processes that have popups or chat programs.
I am running a 9700 compact in my laptop and can just play at minimum specs, you might want to consider updating both those cards to something that can better handle bf2's graphics.

G'day thegathering
Both machines run battlefield 2 sweet @ 1280 x 960 low settings with 768MB DDR RAM. I can Create, Join a LAN/Internet game.
When i put 2 x 512 DDR RAM into either machine thats when i cannot join a LAN game.
If i can join a LAN game with 768MB DDR RAM, WHY can't i join a LAN game with 2 x 512MB DDR RAM?? It just dosen't make sense. There must be a logical answer for this problem but i cannot find it. Please help anyone
Cheers

Please identify every memory module you are working with. Is it 5 in all or 3? Including the RAM that does work. Are they ALL elixer?
When did you purchase the ram in question and from where?
Be aware that with 3 DIMMslot boards only a specific '2' combinations will satisfy stable dual channel for 2 sticks of equal ram. On three slot boards there is generally a Channel A and 2 channel B's. If you have the RAM in the two channel B's and none in a channel A you will get instability. This might be why that when you have 786 mb of RAM in you are good. Question. When you have the 768mb running is that with 3 sticks or 2, and what brand and type are they? Are the dual elixirs equal in model #?
With dual channel, channel A must be filled, and the the first of the Channel B's. Sometimes it doesn't matter which channel B you use and sometimes it does. Just expirement.

Oh and just a few words to 'the Gathering'. If you have never heard of RAM configuration having an effect on gaming I would have to seriously question whether you've messed with much hardware or read many hardware forums. RAM can be a HUUUUGGGGE factor in heavy gaming stability.

G'day Johnpenn
Sorry for the delay in response. It's not even an Elixir problem. I swapped both sticks of RAM for another Brand and still the same problem. As I don't have the first machine with me at the moment i'm using my second machine to further test. Using CPU-Z one stick of 512MB PC2700 is made by Nanya Technology PN: M2U51264DS8HB3G-6K
CAS# LATENCY: 2.5
RAS# TO CAS#: 3
RAS# PRECHARGE: 3
TRas#: 7
Second stick of 512MB PC2700
manufacturer: 0000000000000000 (that's all the info about manufacturer)
All the timings are identical to Nanya Technology 512MB stick.
As for the amount of chip modules on each stick: eight either side = 16 chips per stick.
I can use either 512 stick with a 256 stick and join a LAN game no probs. I can join a LAN game of Battlefield 1942 with both 512 sticks installed no probs.
There is no settings in the BIOS to disable dual channel RAM as both mobo's do not support dual channel RAM anyways.
I'll be f*%ked if i know, i have tryed everything i know which included rearranging both 512 sticks in every combination possible.
Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
Help anyone!!
Cheers

some how you need to get ahold of yet two more sticks of ram to keep troubleshooting it. Preferable equal brand and model #.
corsair, crucial, kingston...some other brand

G'day Johnpenn
Yeah i agree a better name brand might do the trick. I was wondering about the fact that both mobo's have VIA chipsets on them and whether there is any connection with VIA, RAM and BF2??.
I am by no means an expert on this problem but i can't see why just joining a LAN game causes trouble but nothing else.
Thx Johnpenn and everyone else for your ideas and thoughts.
Cheers

i couldn't begin to figure what you problem is being caused by. the only reason i was saying troubleshoot with more ram is because i just wanted to see what would happen
its just strange.
I dont know man.
