I have a friend who auctions things he picks up in lots, things like cloth, wool, ore, etc. Where a shop might give him 20 copper for a lot of items, he'll make at least 4 or 5 silver in an auction. He watches the auctions to see how much other people are selling their items for and will underprice his items a little bit to beat the others so he makes sure that his items sell first.
I don't do this, because I lag so horribly in the auction house. I could manage to put the items up for sale, but I couldn't spend the time looking at a lot of other people's auctions. So I'm in the same boat as you. I have a level 15 rogue, who has yet to see 1 gold.

A good money making tip is to purchase rare spawn recipes from vendors and auction them at the AH. These may be something along the lines of Alchemy recipe Shadow Oil and be designated at the vendor with (1) indicating the vendor has only 1 for sale.
This is an item that spawns only randomly at the vendor. This means that there is only a small quantity, that only certain vendors carry it, that the vendor having it is random, and that would have to travel to the vendor to see if they have it in stock. This makes a relatively inexpensive purchase have a pretty high value at the AH.
I am not suggesting you spend a ton of time running around looking for these items as it wouldn't be very efficient use of your time, but if you are in an area check the vendors and keep an eye out for traveling vendors which may have rare items for sale.

Yeah Caer is right on that, AH and rare vendor items sell well. When in higher level zones I would buy anything that was number (most likely it was spawn and not always there). Another way to use up AH is to sell non usable loot to sell. Alot of good drops sell well in AH and can get you some quick cash (its all in the frequency of item in AH and pricing).
One last suggestion, when your character makes level 6 and you begin to pick gathering professions (skinning, mining, herbals) take two of them. Then after you have gather so much of said products sell them in AH or even to Vendors. After a few times of this you should of netted a nice profit. There are a few players who dont take farming professions and always have a need to purchase materials for their skills. Your abilities then become their necessity to increase their profession. Then once you begin to make a profit you can replace one of those abilities w/ another skill (blacksmithing, alchemy, leathers......). The learning time should be short bcz you will have already leveled up one 1/2 of the ability. I tried this out w/ some new characters and after level 7 had already gained 1g (and that is w/ new armor, learning new skills, and weapon training). It all depends on the dedication you have to get to that point.

Early on in the game I chose not to train up after a certain level, so I could gain gold for my mount. Once you get high enouph level you'll start getting some decent green/blue drops that will sell at the AH.
So, if your wanting to up a craft skill, I found that I will not train in fighting skills so I can make the gold for my crafting skills. Now that I have a couple 45+ chars the gold comes quite easy, as long as your not wanting to spend 100s of gold on an item.
So, what do you want the gold for? Training? Crafting? or saving up for something? These will partially determine what you will need to do.

Saving up for a horse? If you start saving around level 35ish then you'll be set or get one fairly close to level 40. My rogue got his horse at level 42 I believe and the way I made most of the money is from selling the green/blue random drops. But don't sell yourself too short on not spending on training or you'll start to lack in the combat as you level up.

Hi There,
In my experience there is one tremedous thing you can do to start earning big cash.
BUY THE BIGGEST BAGS YOU CAN AFFORD
No joke. The more bags you have, the more empty slots you'll have when you leave town to do your questing. Having more bag slots allows you to stay in the questing zone longer and work over a larger number of mob types before you get the INVENTORY is full screen.
Here's why that is hugely important....
If you look at the starting zone for characters, you'll notice that there are typically 3 types of critters in the area. So you need (and will have) enough bag space to essentially hold 1 of each type of non equipment grey that can drop (plus some extras foe equip that vends well).
But once you leave the starting area, the variation of mobs starts to dramatically increase. That means loads of new grey vendor bait. Can you carry it all and complete the quests you have in that part of one? If not, get more bags. If you still can't, buy bigger bags.
This is NOT a "Do Mining it Rules Solution". The trade skills definitely have thier place in cash generation, but nothing will help you in general more than NEVER leaving loot behind.
On more note on bags. If you are playing one character, when you get to the point that you will NEED the higher end bags, save for them and get them. The 6 slot linen, and 8 slot wool bags aren't big enough to assure that you'll see less of the INVENTORY IS FULL message. If you can swing it, dont bother w/ buying them at all and start w/ silk or high.
I started doing this w/ my first toon to hit 60 (rogue)when he was in his 20's and have never had money problems w/ him. I have refined it some for my 34 (priest) and a bevy of other characters that ARE NOT on the same server at the rogue. That Character currently has 41 gold saved and has bought a Traveler's backpack and 8 runecloth bags (for him and 3 other alts). His trade skills are Alchemy and Herbalism (so I'm NOT making a ton of money with them).

Hmm, I'm not sure what you mean by that. The zone has mobs that are 46-49 for the most part. The skill aspect if the mineral cons anything other than red you can mine it.
What exactly are you trying to do when it complains?

What is your numerical skill level in mining?

The 155/175 lvl means your skill in mining. The more you mine, the higher your lvl in mining goes up. Each skill lvl of mining has different lvl caps so you might need top spend some money for a new lvl...
