| How do you all feel about "Dragon Tamer" as a new profession? |

I know no new info about the next expansion/update is available yet, but I was wondering if you guys think being able to tame dragons would be kool.

Just think of it... You're very own dragon you could ride around all day! And why would it have to be for Rangers only? It should be a profession of its own.

Well, I one time wanted to have the lowest credibility on guildwars.gameamp and went almost to -200 in credit, but in the end decided to change my ways and have positive credit instead.

Hmm I'm not too sure that this would work with Guild Wars. It gives an obvious advantage over everybody else, namely, the dragon.
"Hey look at my elder black widow pet!"
"that's NOTHING! look at my ancient fire dragon"
which one wins? The dragon of course. It would squash the best ranger pet like a tiny little pea being mashed by a big ol' max damage really painful warhammer of bad face mashings with +15% damage (while health > 50%).
Not that the idea isn't awesome in and of itself. It's really awesome! I mean, how cool would it be to be the owner of the dragon in the above example! It would be AWESOME. Just too powerful for Guild Wars.

My preference would be to have a more stealthy profession. I'd be all over that right away. Heck, I would even delete Garrett Gervasius just so my Thief could be called Garrett Gervasius. And for me that's a big thing. Not too powerful, if balanced correctly.

well i don't know about a dragon it would be cool but like they said to much of an advantage. anyways it would be cool if they would let you use more than 8 skills though. there's no room for all my skills and i have good ones but can't use them because of the lack of space.

I think you guys are wrong, I think the "Tamer" profession is a good idea. You have an underpowered melee attack, and underpowered skills and attacks, but your dragon, or ettin, or drake will make up for that. It will all be balanced out.

i like zhongchien's idea...that'd b freakin SIICKK to have a pet HYDRA, or troll haha. and just have weaker attacks and skills

yea a tamer proffesion would be good and same to make it balanced u could have it were u arent able to attack but u can have the skills the ones like the ranger has for a pet but they are more specific to the creature like if u have a dragon u can get the skill dragons fire or sometin like that or if u get a troll u can have troll smash skill or somethin like that and it would be good as it would be balanced due to u not being able to attack

I wouldn't care other than you these dragons would be level 5 pets and get killed by a Level 10 Moa Bird. That would be funny actually. I would like to see some other pet combibations. I think somthing flying would be good. It seems that having a falcon or a hawk would be a good pet. What other pets would you like to see?

Well, a cool pet could be anyone. The problem in this case is that possibilities of using pets are restricted by the game concept of GW. What I mean with this is that i'd be cool to have a hawk, like for spying, exploring faster the map, locate enemies etc. But it is hard to get out all the power of beast domination, as your monkey pet will never be able to climb on a houses' roof, go inside, open you the door etc, due to the game conept which is not like common RPG. What do you think?

A dragon tamer is nice, but again I think it would be kind of unbalanced... of course you others have a point in balancing the char through worse skills of the propper char, but anyway the tamer would have to use mainly the pets' skills to use it.
The thief is a cool prof, very classical RPG char too. Imagine, you could get lower prices at merchants, or even try to get a "free" object (of course no robbing other GW players!!!). If they catch you, you get banned from the city for... lets say 1 day. :D "Ehhh, guild mates, sorry, can't meet with you at droknars couse the dwarfen guard cought me trying to steel my lvl20 armour :P. they kicked my ass off the city!"
You could also have a sort of skills that make you evade attacks (like armour of mist). You could use small weapons, reduce the area in which creatures detect you. That kind of stuff. What do you think????

Yeah that was my point. The guild wars restrictions keep these possibilities at bay. all pets can do is attack. They have different speeds and types of attacks but in the end they are all pretty close to the same. Even a hawk would just be able to attack, that's it. A dragon would still start at level 5 or whatever and my level 20 cat could kill it. But it's fun to come up with the ideas anyway. I remember doing the mesmer quest in preseering where you had to kill that bull. I thought, it would be great if I could just tame it instead!

Yep, that'd be cool. However, there are some new MOMRPG coming out soon...like the one from Microsoft (Vanguard?). There you seem to be able to fly through the map, right? Think I saw something like that on a game-trailer...

I've only seen the screenshots. Looks like GW with cleopatra to me. Also Tabula Rasa, GW with ray guns. As far as the dynamics of the games the jury is still out. We'll see in 2006 i guess.

I'm going to say no.. even though I completely love dragons..
The dragon is a legendary creature of unequal power.. and to give it to a person is just insane.. and if you try to balance it.. your just insulting the word Dragon..
Dragon = Powerful... In every possible game.. lol.. cept i guess.. a baby dragon.. :P
btw.. you forgot Black Dragon.. by far the bestest dragon.. hehe..
also Azure Dragon and Crystal Dragon.. :P

MMMmMM Dragons.... They would be awsome but to powerful, Maybe they could be very hard to catch/ tame But once chaptured are toned down alot. It would add alot of diversity to the game, while where at it add pegasus and griffons. I believe they should introduce ridable mounts tho, warhorses the more believable. Create a knight or paladin style class, introduce lance weapons with skills in charging adding x amount of damage skills for the horse along with armour upgrades. Anyway just a thought.
Side note Awsome board and alot of great posters and ideas. Glad to be part of it!

Dragons would unbalance it and think how much room then would take up :O The doors are big... But not that big! :P

Maybe I missed the post...but did anyone else notice the amusing list of possible dragons??
I did, I found it rather chuckleworthy.
As far as Dragon tamer as new class? Cool but sketchy.

I think if the profession was considered the actual charictor would have to be very weak to compensate for the overly strong dragon.
Its a good idea but not for guild wars.

A great way to balance this out is by having a symbiotic relationship with your pet dragon. The more stronger the pet gets, the more stronger your relationship grows and the more "in-tune" with each other you become. Therefore, at lvl 20, if you OR the dragon dies, BOTH die making the class a little more challenging and stable.
Also, I wouldn't agree with having the dragon available for PVP. It's just too powerful. I would rather prefer just having it for PVE because it makes long distance mishes a shorter time and wouldn't it just be awesome flying over a mob of enemies and sending fire down below while you do a free-fall and jump off the dragon in the last instance, killing the rest, and the dragon lands safely somewhere awaiting your next order? AWESOME!! O.o

What would really want to have is a pet Air Ele. And every few hits he would use a chain lightning. what do u guys think?

This thread has gone a far way since I last said something about it. First, I would like to say, what do you think of my new sig and avatar?
More on topic, I like the ideas that have developed since I posted here. Turning dragon tamer into just plain old tamer and making them absolutely dependant on their monster pets for survival. That takes skill and talent. I LOVE it! Great thinking, guys.
As for victo, why don't you kick up the life of my "A new, stealthy profession" thread with your most awesome ideas? I want to see that thread hit 70 posts, but it's been gathering dust lately.
I wonder if I can get A-Net to build me a really painful warhammer of bad face mashings! :-)

This thread started a bit tongue-in-cheek I think. A Dragon tamer would be way to overpowering in a game like this. Not to mention that Dragon's are the ultimate exlusivity in any fantasy game. Then the idea of a general tamer evolved, this made me wonder:
Don't we allready have the 'tamer' profession in the form of the Ranger? If you want to buff your Pet, you'll end up weakening yourself. The more serious (not looking for UberOwnagePower) suggestions seem to get pretty close to what a Pet Ranger might do if played correctly.
I'm currently much infolved with fiddling with a ranged (i.e. not melee) Smiting Monk, but after that I'm defininetely going to dust off my Ranger and try to play 'Pet Master' or whatever you want to call it. :-)
Now if only Anet would see it's way clear to correcting their heinous crime of not letting me have a Yak as pet...

Well dragons you say...
I wouldn't go so far as to use a dragon, I'd say, keep it at drake level. I wouldn't min dseeing a class of enchanter that permanently has a drake on a leash, sending mental pulses along the line to control the beast. This way a player can play a monstrous role that doesn't have to be stronger than any other class. To be slighly more oroginal compared to a ranger/tamer, lycanthropy could be introduced to the game, maybe as a permanent selectable state or with a time limit such as is in Diablo 2.

@Lani, yes the tamer would be like a pet ranger. Only more so. The tamer would have access to creatures that can stay alive for a decent amount of time, and all (not just one) of their attributes relate to that. After all, the ranger is a jack-of-all-trades and being a jack-of-the-tamer-trade keeps up ANet's goals for the ranger.
