Grrrr.

okay....I consider myself a pretty patient person - heck, I've solo'd a troll to 31 so far...but...

when ads start popping up (even on mouse over) when i login to this site (in this case, the us navy ad) it hits a nerve. i don't mind, and can tolerate, ads that don't hinder me from viewing the contact that i actually want to see, regardless of the nature of the ad. but when they overlay the site, forcing you to interact with the popup/layer, i get p.o'd.

please lose the layering ads.

not a flame. just a rant/request.

Never had a pop up while here. If you are getting them Kanuck The best thing I can tell you is to get an anti spyware program like Ad-aware or spybot.

I have never had any; but, my Web Browser (IE) has pop-up blocker. that being said, I've never been alerted that pop-ups have been blocked when logging onto this site.

And, I agree with War Shadow...AdAware is great software.

never had my pop up blocker tell me there are any pop ups on this site either... also this is the 1st i've heard of it... is there any way the pop up could have come from another site b/f you got onto this one? the only thing i've ever had pop up is when i log in and i have a new PM it offers me to check my pm's now.....

could you try again and let us know if you have another pop up show up?

I have a pop-up blocker like many of you have mentioned but I've found they don't block the sort of layered ads that he's talking about. The problem is that they're not strictly a pop-up. They don't open a new window. They just overlay a graphic on top of the content in the existing window and often have a "close" button that's cleverly hidden somewhere.

to clarify, it was not a new browser window, but a leyered ad. my mouse was over the ad area as i logged in. the muse over triggered the ad to "layer" of site content. it appeared to be an ad for the US Navy. At least it looked like it.

On the topic of "Layered Ads":

Actually, we are very against these ads. Here is the way it works and how we have to deal with them once they are visible...

We do not place ads on the site, they are automatically served to us by a third-party that dishes out a lot of ads. Usually these ads are what you currently see, however some time we do get a rogue ad that consists of a Flash movie that has a rollover feature that usually rolls on top of some content on the site. The most recent occurance was a Navy ad that did this.

When we see these ads we call up our third-party and request that they be removed. We rate the usability of the network a pretty high priority and when ads or pop ups block the user's content, we have to handle the situation with an Iron Fist (which usually means we ask them politely to take the ad off our network). =)

So I apologize for your problem with the ad and if you are still seeing it, please message me with the name of the ad and if its the same kind of ad as what I am describing, we'll have it removed.

amper staff and dev team:

thanks to all who replied to my short rant and thanks to those who took it serious enough to investgate. i appreciate the willingness and diligency to which my feedback was persued. as a software engineer myself, i for one can certainly appreciate the timliness of your response as well as your understanding that user experience here on the site is what makes this site as great as it is. if i didn't enjoy the site and those who are involved and active with and on the site, i wouldn't have cared about the ad and subsequenty not returned (if the ads continued). but luckliy that's not the case! my faith in humankind has been restored. ;)

so again, to all involved, a hearty "huzzah!"

I just saw another roll over ad. It was some ad that says, "It's more than just a movie" and has "roll over for movie trailer" or something like that on it. I only noticed it because it lept out at me when I accidentally rolled my cursor over it.
