Server connection problems

Hi peepz, I have a very weird problem with my UT2k4 server:

I have a dedicated pc wich I use to run my UT server. Everything has been installed and the server starts also :thumbup: I can connect to the server over the LAN with my main pc.
BUT:

When I give the (external) ip to people to connect to it, it fails, nobody can connect to the server out of the LAN. The weird thing is that there is a connection between the server and external player but the game just 'hangs' at the black screen before the game begins to load its maps.

The next thing I tried was to make my main pc a server for people to connect to, this works great people can connect right away en join the server and play the game :D. but I don't want to use my main pc as a UT2k4 server, that's why I have the server pc.
when I look at the logs of the server the next thing occours:

MasterServerUplink: Connection to ut2004master1.epicgames.com established.
Approval APPROVED
Master server requests heartbeat 0 with code 9100
Master server requests heartbeat 1 with code 9100
Master server requests heartbeat 2 with code 9100
Master server assigned our MatchID: 0

Close TcpipConnection xx.xx.xxx.xxx:3851 08/15/05 16:21:37

This doesn't happen at my regular pc.

This is a little part of the UT2004.ini with the Masterserver uplink info:
[IpDrv.MasterServerUplink]
DoUplink=True
UplinkToGamespy=True
SendStats=True
ServerBehindNAT=True
DoLANBroadcast=True
bIgnoreUTANBans=False

If you need to see the entire UT2004.ini I'll post it
plz help me :O

thank you for reading this,
Stealth

Re: Server connection problems

Your server.ini file looks fine. Try this:
1.) Obtain your LAN ip address for the server PC. On a windows pc, go to start, run, and type in "command or cmd", this should launch the command prompt for you. Once in the prompt type "ipconfig", without the quotes. The ip adress displayed will be your LAN IP adress of your server PC. Write it down

2.)Launch the configuration utility for your router/modem, and foward the ports listed below for the IP adress of your server PC; not your gaming PC.

7777 UDP/IP (Game Port)
7778 UDP/IP (Query Port)
7787 UDP/IP (GameSpy Query Port)
28902 TCP/IP (Allows your Server to Connect to the UT2004 Master Server Browser)
xxxx TCP/IP (Port set via ListenPort that your WebAdmin will run on)--default 8080 I think--

3.) Restart your ut server, and your friends should be able to connect and play without timing out on the black screen.

Also if your server PC is set to "automatically obtain an ip address" your local/lan IP may change after reboots. Keep this in mind, as you will have to enable/forward ports for this new server IP each time one is assigned.

If all this does not work, and your router/modem has DMZ, enable it for your Server PC's IP adress.

Re: Server connection problems

I've tried it, but it doesn't work, the modem (alcatel speedtouch 510) has an function to forward all the server requests to 1 internal IP (wich is off course the server ip)

The server has an static IP (the same ip after each boot), and I tried using a dynamic IP (different IP after boot) but that didn't work either...

Re: Server connection problems

Does your game server display a ping in the server browser for the gametype its running (not the Lan tab)?

Also are you running a dedicated server using an epic supplied Identification number for dedicated servers, or is the server using the same CD key?

Are you hosting through the game itself rather or hosting with ucc.exe?

Re: Server connection problems

I use te ucc.exe file, I've tried the ingame host function, but that didn't work either.

I don't know if there is an server ping (didn't asked the testers that).

I have tried using different keys, a client version key and a server key (Epic says you can use the same key for multiple servers so I found a key wich was published on the Epic forums...

Re: Server connection problems

Well, as for checking the ping in the server browser you have that ability. Just dont look at the LAN portion of the browser. Go to the applicable gametype (DM,TDM,CTF,etc. whatever the default is for your server), and look for you servers name. Refresh a couple times, if just started the server to give adequate response time from the master server. It should ping as one of the top servers in the list.

If a ping is showing up in that browser then, I dont know what to tell you, except maybe try http://www.unrealadmin.org forums.

I suspect that no ping will show though (N/A) in which case it confirms that the issue has to do with you switching/routing/modem configuration. Due to you already mentioning that you can play on it, basically elliminates an issue with the .ini file. The symptoms you displayed are very common for hosting in which the proper ports arent fowarded, or DMZ not enabled.
