RAM

I have a Dell 4400, and I am going to upgrade its 256 RAM to a gig today. In my computer there are two RAM slots, of which only one is used right now. If i buy the gig of RAM today, can I put both the gig and leave the 256 in, making it even faster?

Re: RAM

I would recomend finding out how much RAM your computer is able to take...I am guessing that it can only go upto a gig. In that case I would recomend getting 2 512 sticks of dual channel if your dell can support dual channel. Best thing you actually could do is call Dell and get the exact specs on your computer ( What it takes for RAM, How much it can take....ect ) Then go to tigerdirect.com and look for some RAM at a good price. You might run into a problem with your Dell however. My best friend has a Dell and he can only use Dell's Memmory ....and it aint cheap.

Like I said....Call Dell for your specs and go from there.

Questions to ask Dell

1. How much RAM will my computer Support

2. Will it support Dual Channel

3. What types of Ram will my computer support ( PC 3200 ? )

fyi...you cant go wrong with PC3200 RAM...thats what I am running and its quick as hell. I am also running 2 gigs in dual channel so that makes a big difference.

A FEW THINGS

a few things

the 4400 comes with a geforce2 mx. The game will spit that card right back in your face and probably hold a grudge against you. Is there still a gforce2 card in there?

recent motherboards are generally not happy with mismatched ram. but not sure about your board since it is older. Like BigDawg said you would be better off getting 2x512. But on the other hand if you could know for certain whether your motherboard would be happy with mismatched RAM, then having 1.25 gigs of RAM might actually benefit you on higher settings. 1 gig of usage is about where bf2 floats on mid to high settings.

now as for your card, unless you have an nvidia5700 or ati9600 or higher in your system, it doesn't look good. Because we already know you have an older board and cpu. You are going to definitely need to have a somewhat beefy card to make up for that.

************

If you pair a 1 gig chip of RAM with the current 256, make certain you purchase a stick with the same speed and cas latency as the stick you already have. You probably have pc2100, or pc2700.

BUT if you are going to get two new 512's then go ahead and get pc3200 corsair or kingston or something. Get exactly same model sticks, and try to get 2.5 cas latency RAM. I realise that pc3200 is faster than your motherboard can exploit but that's okay. The reason you want to get RAM that is actually faster than your motherboard will run is because, one, it is not (in most cases) going to slow you down. Two, it will be good to have the pc3200 if you ever want to upgrade to a new system (assuming you would be upgrading to a pc3200 supportable system) You will already have more recent speeds ram. If you get 2x512 new ram then get PC3200, cas latency 2.5, non-ECC.

Re: RAM

I solved this problem easily. I do not have the old Geforce card in. I have a Geforce FX 5200 8x AGP and I bought two 512mb of RAM sticks. The game runs perfectly on almost highest settings.

Re: RAM

well if you want 1gb ... 2 stick of 512 would be best because if your motherboard supports duel channel this would work .... i would say get this

Corsair Twinx 1Gb (2*512) pc3200

if not that just shop around on ncix .... but like stated above ... talk to somone from dell and find out if your comp supports duel channel, how much ram your mother board can actually have, and what speed... proble will be pc3200 tho.. also ask them what kinds of ram would work and ask them about that corsair stuff ... gave a link above ... thats good stuff but dell comps r hard to plz when it comes to ram
