On normal mode I just let my entire party die and used Lothar to finish the dragon off. I find that most of the boss fights are easier by controlling only one character. It's a lot easier to learn the timing and patterns that way. By attempting to keep them all alive you are adding further complexity on to things that don't necessarily need to be addressed.
The crabby looking guys are slow and annoying but they don't do a great deal of damage. I'd just either use my Power on em every once in a while and walk around them the rest. You can kill the dragon without having to worry about the black crab things. Just avoid them while you pluck away at the dragon.
If you want more assurance you can always lead the crab guys away then run back to the ballista. They take their time so you'll have a few seconds where you only have to deal with the fire and you can rack up a few shots on the dragon.

I had a lot of trouble with that fellow as well.
He usually flow off before I could turn the ballista and fire. But I found he always get back to the same spot, until he has been fired upon, then he choose a new spot.
So, I run in, turned the ballista and run out again, then poped in and out til I saw that dragon was back at his possition then I ruched for the ballista and fired it.
Now I could use a tip for the dark wizards, they keep killing all my party in only a few seconds. Usually after I have got one of them, then it just goes plopp-plopp-plopp-plopp and my party is gone.

In the future, could you please refrain from posting huge spoilers right in the title of your message? Not everyone else here is as far as you are in the game (like me, still in Act I) and now I know what's coming and when. It really spoils the game to take away all the mystery for me that you had the chance to experience...

How are you *not* supposed to read the TITLE?
Now I know when I get to the end of Act II, there is going to be a boss character, and that character is going to be a dragon. I didn't read the replies to this post so as not to spoil it further. I had no idea dragons were in this game, now I do, and it sucks that I won't be surprised when I get to the end of ACT II when I see a dragon. I'll bet when this guy saw the dragon, he said to himself, "OMG! A dragon! How cool! How Scary!"
Everyone else reading the title to this post gets robbed of that moment of surprise, which is why we try to avoid spoilers.
In another post, he posted the name of the guy who is the Boss at the end of Act III as well. Now, if I meet this guy before the end of Act III, I'll already know he's the boss. Again, he blew it for me.
It's just a matter of courtesy...

Yes, it would be nice for mods to change the title to "Endboss Act 2 - problems". And other spoilish thread names too :)

I did it that too, and kill the dragon with my warrior and let others of my team mates unconscious.
Edit:
Of course, kill it with the ballista :)
