Re: Guild Wars Interview Reactions

It was a good interview, but it contains elements we already know, I'm not trying to be pessimistic and all, no far from that.

I'm happy that Arenanet keeps it's doors open to "runs" and not trying to prevent it, so that, sorry to say, weaker players who are stuck in an area they don't like, also get a chance to get further without too much effort.

Re: Guild Wars Interview Reactions

Love the idea of increasing the character slots - you're right, four is just not enough unless you enjoy PvE (Which I do, but I just find it annoying when I have to wipe a char and start from scratch.)

I also like the idea that they intended to allow runs, but I did notice them say something about the balance issue there.
Guild Wars:
Wanna know a secret? We put in the ability to make such runs as an intended design element. Sure we could prevent it, but it's not our objective to do so. If people want to power-level a friend, or even turn offering a running service into a cash-raising profession, it's really ok with us.

There are two ways in which it would not be ok:

" If someone scams players by taking money and not making the run, they become a nuisance factor rather than a clever entrepreneur, and we would take action on that account.

" If we find that players are using runners to develop a character that is then abusive in PvP play by virtue of their higher-level acquisitions (particularly armor) we will need to take steps to prevent this.

In other words, to the extent that a practice like "running" or taking a shortcut might negatively affect other players, we'll be taking a look at it very carefully. If there's a lot of abuse of lower-level characters (those who are playing through the missions) by those who are taking the shortcut, we'll address it. I note that we did not choose to address the matter with last night's major game update, and I believe that is because the possible problems are not evident to such a degree that we need to make an amendment. But I just spoke with Lead Designer James Phinney, and he assured me that we will continue to assess the situation and we will come up with solutions if the scales tip towards the negative.
What does this mean (to me)? It means that they won't nerf the runners, they'll target the people that are abusing the runs (such as the people who get run through the missions to beacon's and then get a run to Droknar's just so they can get ahold of the armor for the low and mid level pvp. I think if they did do something about this, they'd add a lvl requirement to the droknar's armor or some sort of attribute requirement (It'd be kinda neat to see the armor bonuses tied to an attribute, but I don't think that that would really be workable, at least not w/o extensive playtesting). As it is, the Beacon's to Droknar's run is difficult enough, and takes a considerable amount of skill to run effectively and make it, and I'm really glad they they are not, at least at this point, intending to penalize the runners for the actions of those on the receiving end of the run.

Just my two gold pieces.

Re: Guild Wars Interview Reactions

off the subject but to make the arenas more balanced they should put an armor cap instead of a level cap on the armor

the interview was okay knew most of the stuff already though

Re: Guild Wars Interview Reactions

Most of it was known info. I think it was obvious they wanted to be able to have runs otherwise why would they even make a path to droknars from the northern shiverpeaks?

Re: Guild Wars Interview Reactions

As much as I have to admit it, I've tried both, taking the long way to the Forge and then on another character I pay and ran there to upgrade. I'm not sure about anyone else, but the second player didn't seem to play as good after I bought the new armor. ( Maybe just guilt). Making it a level required area is a good idea, one to avoid problems but maybe to save people from themselves.

Loved what you had to say in the interview and really liked the addition of extra players in the future.

Re: Guild Wars Interview Reactions

I will replay about the runs as well.

With the first charachter, it is advisable to do the long way, it's one of the fun elements in the game to explore the areas by the order of the story.
If you run to Droknar, you can easly know that the White Mantle will become enemies even before u meet them for example.
This is a spoiler. Personaly i don't like spoilers.

In my second charachter (farmer) I took as much shortcuts as possible - Droknar - armor, Desert - Acsend and then run where the skills I need are located.

Anything that can contribute to the economy - in this case add depth to it, is a good thing.

And we must not forget, people play games for fun, so, if one want's to do the shortcut, why not?
