well i prefer sword, cause it has a more constant dmg range, but the axe has the higher max dmg of the two.
Also i think the sword has much better skills than the axe.
It is only when you have lost everything, that you are free to do anything.

i disagree
i like the axe better and think it has better skills that can hit a number of enemies not just one like the sword

well, the sword has the fastest attack speed, has some very nice skills, has a lower low end range, and lower max damage and is one handed, allowing for an energy item or shield and i use one on a semi regular basis
recently i have begun using an axe, slightly slower speed than a sword, but a higher overall range of damage, not as many skills, but i have found that i really only equip 4 or 5 weapon skils normally anyway, so there is sufficient axe skills available to combo up, it's also one handed, sooooo
i really dont think it matters in total, the weapons probably would even out in damage over time if you just swung them using no skills...hmmm, be an interesting test... it's how you combo skills and use the weapon that matters.
knockdown/interrupt hammer warriors are awful handy too :)

for pve- axe is the best!
for pvp- hammer/sword
axe is good for farming. u can take large groups of foes and make some nice combo wiht the monks skilz (or ranger doing aplly poison then doing cyclon axe and poison allll the foes around u).
if u take sword u cant take more then 2-3 foes at a time.

I am using now a Wo/M with a nice hammer and found that the dwarfen battle stand is terrific agaisnt all kind of casters. The only problem is lack of energy with my plate armour. Will have to buy the 15k gladiator armour... someday. (sigh)
I was thinking of changing to axe, once I find a nice one and will change to secondary necro. :) Some nice blood fiest!

I find axe to be very good, especialy with the combination of axes i use.
One axe gives 14% more dmg while above 50% health and the second one gives 15% more dmg while below 50% health, therefore I give a lot of dmg nomatter how much health i got.
This is also a good setup for PvP.
Now, sword isn't good in PvE, becasue not all monsters have flesh and can bleed, where as in PvP all players are human and can bleed ect.
So I guess in the end it all depends on what skills you use, and on what type of W/Mo you are, in game.
This is what makes this game so great, that even though things are so different, they all in some way balance out each other.

I have a Mo/W and to tell the truth, starting out just use the best weapon you can get. When you have good weapons of each class then you can take it more seriously. I usually use a sword but I have a great sword and dont have anything else even close.

Swords are the masters of conditions. With a sword you can keep many, many conditions on your opponent at once. They also attack faster.
Axes have several tactical advantages over swords, and are much much better for soloing. They also deal more damage than swords, overall I think, and are one handed. The slightly decreased attack speed compensates for the higher damage.
I perfer an axe, just because I think that they are more straightforward and versital. Both are one handed.
In my opninon, hammers are better than both swords and axes, but that is just my personal opinion, and the topic creator did not ask about hammers so I shall not address them here.

Um, I'm fairly sure that axes and swords attack at the same rate. Hence they both have max 3/1 vamp. Hammers attack slower and therefore have 5/1 max vamp.
Also the Prima Guide says they attack the same speed (although who trusts that thing, lol).

i use an sword and i think there great but axes are good aswell its just depends on wot u want to do like solo farming use a axe but swords are very good when doing the missions and if u think swords are crap then u have never seen final thrust with attributes in swordmanship at 16 and when the enemy is under 50% and it takes off upto 130 dmg in 1 hit

I have a W/Mo 20. I use a sword and can solo 5 minataurs in the desert easily, same with griffons. Its the skills you use with them that i find counts.

Personally i prefer to use axes, although the average damage is less than that of a sword, axe being 17, and sword being 18.5. The compensation for this is that there seem to be more ways of dealing outright damage with a bonus on axes. For example skills like cleave, eviscerate, executioners strike, and axe twist. Another bonus on axes is the ability to use dismember to cause a deep wound to enemies that do not have flesh, meaning that if you use this skill at regular intervals you can keep your opponents max health with a 20% penalty throughout the fight. I also prefer axes when fighting opponents with a high armour rating as the extra damage skills help keep your damage respectable, and you can also use penetrating blow to break through strong armour.
If you make a new character, I would highly recommend not buying a chaos axe or fiery dragon sword however, as they will both cost you a lot of money because they look "cooler" than other weapons. Save looking good for later and go find yourself a weapon thats got some nice damage and enchantments to get you through the game.

lo, peeps
In my opinion there is something else... well, my warrior uses a sword because she could break her nails with an axe or a hammer but, out of the personal reason:
Apart from the conditions-theme someone mentioned above, I think the importance of your warrior weapons varies according to your secondary profession and the role your gonna take in your teams.
For instance, in my PERSONAL preference -which I know is gonna be far different from many of yours- the warrior is just a damage taker that either annoys casters and keeps enemies distracted so your teammates can do the real damage, or tries to protect the monks and other casters by causing conditions to their attackers, knocking them down, crippling them, etc. It would also depend on your secondary profession... As you just said, its a matter of tastes, but I think it does also depends on your role in the team: Damage taker, protector, tanker.....
