Loot

Ok here is my next question that I'm sure somebody knows the answer to. I've been trying to figure out how the game decides on who gets the loot that mobs drop. At first I thought it might have to do with the amount of damage done, or who hit the mob first, or last, but then I noticed there were times that I didn't even hit a mob, and got an item from it. So is it totally random, or is there some type of system in place to determine this?? Any ideas, or answers?

Re: Loot

Sometimes it goes in circles, i.e Leader gets first, next person gets next and so on, but it might be diff. I also know that the range of people within the loot get it.

Re: Loot

Seems that this issue has not been discussed for a while, but I thought still to add my findings here also.
It's not about the damage, who gets the loot.
(Think about pure prot/heal monks, would not get any)

It has still something to do with the skill use.
I have noticed it many times, that if I'm in a party that has most of the members less active (use skills less / attack monsies usually later than I do ), I will get more loot in average. So being active in a party, pays of.

Re: Loot

Once in a FoW run i was on my healer monk (not attacking at all) and i got 3 shards and just 1 other person in the team got 1. So it cant be to do with damage then lol

Re: Loot

I`ve been thinking about his for a while, but the only thing I could come up. Was that the players activity has an influence in the distribution of loot. But there must be more factors involved I just don`t know which.

Re: Loot

I dont really think its based on activity in the party one group i had for some reason i just died every fight so it got to the point where like one hit would kill me so i didn't attack or get a spell off yet i still got a shard.

Well I think that someone in a lucky stroke could get evrything and his/hers teammates nothing.
And isn`t Areanet always concerned with balance?
For Example look at all that Nerf(t?)ing been done, all for more balance.
I don`t think it`s really random, they wanna make it look like it so nobody trys to figure it out and really gets all the loot.

I`ve never seen any computerised program being able to "random" pick numbers (or ppl). There`s always some sort of mathematical formula behind it.
(Not that I`m good enough in Maths to figure them out though...)

But that`s just what I think.

I had a lucky stroke recently where I got 5 Green Items from a Green Item farming run, while the other 4 players only got the t-shirt so to speak. So that's one case in favor of the random theory.

On the Balance argument, having a non-randomized loot distribution depending on user activity is what would upset the balance. Especially as balancing concerns would create the need for a Activity-Farming-Recognizer if this were the case. Also it's a lot less resource intensive to have a randomizer do the dividing of the loot, rather than meticuously keeping track of how active the individual players are. Cost of Operations are simply lower for randomized loot drops.

Well naturally all software random generators are pseudo-random in reality. The generation of random numbers is way to important to be left up to chance. :-)

Seriously, there's actually some True Randomization software algorithms, but they need hardware. There's systems that read minute power-fluctuations on the power-supply, randomizers based on SNMP or all out IP traffic on a network card and even a system that uses Lava-lamps. All these are available to ArenaNet. I wonder what kind of lighting they use in their server rooms, might be very, 'ambient' :-)

Edit: The usual typo's.

Re: Loot

i have and augment against the fact the loot disutirbation is based on skills usage i was farming with my guild in the under world (pre-patch), and we had 4 rangers a healer a mesmer and a warrior and us 4 rangers were laying traps like mad and all the warrior did was stand there and look pretty didnt even have to fight or anything and he got both ecos that droped and all the rangers got was some dodgie weapons.

Re: Loot

it allways seemed to be linked to the killing stroke when i was in my warrior.
with my necro it seemed to be linked to a well timed skill.
with my monk it seemed to be linked to keeping health lvls reasonable and on keeping everyone alive but i notice that sometimes one char (usually a low lvl in a high mission) would take inordinate amounts of dmg and i would just keep that person on the edge of death so as to encourage them to back away. i felt like i got allot more drops when doing that.
but there is the issue that what ever is most on your mind when you get a good drop is likely to be the thing you attribute the drop to. and if you are thinking that affects the drop then it becomes more previlent in you battles and... with the power of sugestion, group thinking and no way of proof better to think of it as random and just play your heart out.
arena net like to shut down any exploits that make the game not only about playing but fairness :(.
all of us will look for exploits to get more out if you do find one for god sake dont post it or it might get shut down lol.

Re: Loot

Ok, have to step in here. Janmog is, unwittingly I believe , propagating you violating the Guild Wars EULA. It states that you're not to use "exploits" but report them as soon as you become aware of them.
Failing to comply with the reporting bit doesn't affect you really, but exploiting the exploit does. Accounts were shut down this summer when people discovered and abused an exploit involving the Doppleganger Battle.

I'm sure what Janmog wrote isn't intended as incitment to EULA breakage, but his choice of words may give that impression to an inatentive reader.

Re: Loot

the lol was ment to signify me laughing when i said it. thus it was my intent to show i was joking... umm yeah thats it report anything you find here and arena net will read it and shut it down.

oh wait i found an exploit i can use signet of agony and use plague sending to transfer the bleeding to a foe. or the monk skill matyr to get all the blinds off the warriors at once and send em back.
i blame the pvp set for whining all the time. its perfectly fair when your kicking ass in hells or thunderhead keep.
contraversial but thats my opinion. it all depends on what is an exploit as to who sees it as giving some one an edge in a balanced game. arena net im sure man a bug in the programming that clearly a bug. uw spiders in pre ascelon and drok armor are ment to be there they make the game... shh i gotta stop myself there dont tell arena net that one.

edited to make it more inflamitory and a full stop somewhere (tounge in cheek)
