You say Rangers are really crap in this guide and I disagree.
Rangers arnt farmers no. They could be though? Infact you know what. Im gunna make a Ranger farmer. I have a plan (hehehe).
Ranger arnt crap and can deal ALOT of damage...
PvE
Use Kindle Arrows + Dual Shot! - LOVELY!
Pets are quite useless - They use up 2 skill slots + they disable all your skills for 10 seconds when they die (I think it was).
Troll ungent is a really good skill aswell - Rangers dont get much armour.
I would also use Whirling Defence - Good for them annoying things that try killing you. Rangers are good at defence... and running! :)
Rangers are most likely to live at the end of a battle.
Last, yeah stay back 'cause I think that you deal more damage like that! - Never really confirmed this though.
PvP
If you go for an Elite I would choose a condition one for PvP - Melandru's Arrows or Poision Arrows.
Frozen Soil is always good in PvP.
Let me take this chance to say - Ressurection Signet!
Thus, Rangers are good if used properly. Im really happy with my Ranger and I would never swap him for anything!

I agree rangers can do massive damage when used right, ive heard of full ranger teams taking down properly made teams (2 warriors, couple monk and some casters/nukers) all you have to do is think properly, as for pets, im making my self a beast master, gonna be a N/R necro summoner and beast mastery ranger, it sounds like fun lol

No offense, Blackeye_Bandit but I'm shocked at the ignorance you portray of the Ranger profession. I can only imagine that you've had some bad experiences with Rangers or had trouble playing with your own, but this is way off base imo.
First of all, Rangers have the second-best armor set in the game. Only the warriors have better armor. So " Stay As Far Bck As Possible " doesn't hold any water. Especially when you look into the Expertise and Wilderness Survival attributes and notice all the cool stances that make it very hard to even hit a Ranger. I've lost count of the times I've played 'anchor' for groups so the Elementalists could nuke, after the Warriors had bought it.
Rangers can't do the same ammount of damage as warriors or elementalists, that's true. But how many professions do you know that can do poisoning, fire and bleeding damage with one attack? Not to mention all the disrupting abilities, helpfull spirits and such that a Ranger has.
Using a pet, when done correctly can be devastating.
The Ranger is a jack of all trades and master of none.
This is a strength in my book, while you seem to see it as a weakness. I hope you will give your Ranger a second chance, or start one of your own an maybe read up on some other people's advice. You're missing out on a whole lot of fun with this Profession with your current view of it I think.
Sorry if my post sounds harssh, it's not really ment that way.
Edit: spotted a bad typo.

Lani is completely right. I thoroughly enjoy being a ranger (my first and favorite class) and many of the things in the original post are untrue.

Lani you said allI was going to say I think lol. Black_eye I know rangers that can kill faster and take more damage then most people in the game. It's because they learn what their skills are for and how to use them. for a long time the elite pvp team was all rangers....one of the best rangers I know is a a ranger / mesmer, nails all caster with shut down, poisons one in group, then transfers all hex's and poisons from one person in group to the rest of the group with a mesmer skill ( I can't think of what the skill is ) Learn the proffesion and be ammazed at what they can do lol.
Dracorian say's If she's worth the ride, she's worth my time...
\"Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out and loudly proclaiming ~ WOW, what a ride!!!\"
\"Long ago when men cursed and beat the ground with sticks, it was called witchcraft. Today it's called golf\"
I've decided to dedicate my body to a medical
school, and just before I die, I'm going
to swallow a little plastic toy. That way,
the medical student who cuts me open will
get a nice surprise. I just hope the other
medical students aren't sad because they
didn't get a toy with their cadaver, too.

just to add an opinion, shocked I know, hehe...
Started an E/R, he's now lvl 20 etc... not as good of armor as a full ranger, but a lotta fun to play...
poison, pin down, and nuke, .... quite enlightening...
trapping in the underworld, hehe, nice, lay down a quickening zephyr spirit, and with the energy reserves I can lay down more than a few traps... nothing beats a full 8 person trapper team... set, pull, pooof :D
pets...meh, 2 slots... fogedahboutit... pet dies at the wrong time (any time for that matter) suxxors :S
as for stay back... es an E/R, i have to, but i have seen some good tanking done by rangers with a healer on them holding groups still... use a longbow, and you are completely out of agro range, stay behind your healers and other back line folks as you can, and keep a good eye in the field of battle, look ahead at the next target and start poisoning them, soften em up a bit before the meat shields get there :)
As a person who likes playing the aforementioned meat shield... i have a hard time not playing my E/R... he's too much fun... errrr, take a rez signet, often you are the only one to survive a situation gone bad :)

Its funny you mentioned tanking a Ranger, I tanked mine this past weekend on the Thunderhead Keep mission. At the part where you cross the long bridge with a lot of enemies at the other end. I went 3/4 of the way or so down. Set 3 traps, drew them into the traps and got surrounded, Actually got cut off. I know there was one warrior tanking on the other side of the pile but there was more than enough foes to go around. The monk (henchi) actually took care of me. Between that, Troll Urgent, my infused armor, I did well. Mesmer secondary so I was hitting the group with Chaos Damage and using Melandus Arrows on my targets. I didnt die to my own surprise and took several down. I got a new respect for my own proffession. I feel that there is so much more that I can do by using the builds correctly. Any build avice for Rangers I'm interested. BTW, long bow phooey. Give me a Half Moon any day!

Lol, yeah I'll explain. I went up, set traps, and pulled them onto the traps but my team...they stayed way back. I didnt notice it. I thought that they would come up and it would be a head to head match up. Instead the bad guys moved past me to go to them. BAsically I screwed up a little by not watching what they were doing. I did try to fall back farther but too late, I was trapped. To re-phrase what I said, I unintentionaly tanked.

I prefer to see rangers in the groups I'm in. I haven't started a ranger yet (E/R, N/M, W/?), but I like the skills I have with my E/R, and I like the fact that they can move about the field with versatile attacks without anyone knowing where they're coming from. The most successful groups I've seen have been with a ranger at the helm. Two or more on the same group can be very devastating. I've heard people say that rangers are next to useless at the lower levels, but are in high demand at the higher levels. What makes them so useful at the higher levels should make them a benefit at all levels.
