Tabletop

On the Official Forums I noticed that there are a lot of people who have been playing D&D for years. I was wondering how many of you out there have (or still do) play the tabletop version.
I myself have only played it a handful of times, while I am a recovering gamer (I've been clean for 3 yrs now), I never really got into D&D that much. What about you?

RE: Tabletop

I am an official, card-carrying D&D Junkie. I started playing when I was 7, and am now in my 30s. I've played every game-world produced - and my favorite is the Planescape setting. I'd love to see that converted full-blown to the 3.5 rules - and not just the slim little Manual of the Planes book they put out, but that's another topic. I've also had a few Op-Ed articles published in Dragon Magazine, and worked in the table-top gaming area at this past year's Penny Arcade Expo.

I've also gotten my wife and kids hooked on the game, and we have a group with some friends that meets once or twice a month as time permits.

Yeah... I'm a junkie. hehehe

I'm one of those guys who always gets the bonus points for "Do you know what THAC0 means?" on the geek tests.

:D

I'm kinda proud of that.

RE: Tabletop

Yup...I'm right there with ya. Another card carrying D&D geek. Been playing forever and a day, and still play when I can get more than two friends together at the same time with more than an hour to kill...which is really hard to do when you and all your old D&D friends are in their 30s and have lives.

I'll probably still be DMing when my great-grandkids are old enough to understand the rules.

Have fun, do it well, and share your knowledge.

My wife laughed when I told her that I wanted to be buried with my lucky D20. Then she stooped and realized I was serious. :)

Hey, just b/c you know the meaning of THAC0 doesn't make you a card carrying D&D anything... No really it doesn't!

RE: Tabletop

Never played the D&D Battles [or whatever the minis games are called], but have played AD&D since it came out. Been stuck as the DM for 25 of my 28 [soon to be 29 :)] years playing. Hated 2nd Edition, 3rd/3.5 is ok - AC is better now, but the characters actually seem MORE limited now than in 1st Ed. Then again, I've added an awful lot of house rules over the years [made/borrowed/stole probably 30 different crit tables; at least 20 notebooks full of campaign areas/plots/NPCs]. I use Geo-Hex or Battlemats with minis for almost every encounter - adds more tactics to combat.

Looking for more of the plastic minis [arthritis making painting more of a chore than a delight, now :(] - esp. the classics: orcs, goblins, trolls, etc. if anyone has any for sale. [Maybe a Topic category for buy/sell/trade could be added?]

RE: Tabletop

I may not be the most extreme DnD geek out there, but I'd deffinitly say I am a DnD geek. I've played since I was young, mabey 5, I'm now 21 and actully playing in a few different campaigns with friends. One of which is Eberron which sadly is comming to a close, but I will be DMing my own. I have a lot of the orginal books 1st edition to 3.5, I have small booklets of quests all over the place, more than I need. I have collected a lot of the DnD minis but just as a collecters item and a hobbie.

I was introduced to DnD young and grew up with it all my life. So I'm at least part geek

RE: Tabletop

I stopped being part geek long ago. I'm now a full fledge geek and nerd. I gave up trying to be "normal" because it really just wasn't me.

But I'm still a recovering role player... yep been clean for a long while now!

RE: Tabletop

It's funny that DND and Geek have always coined together. I have been playing DND since I was 12 (I am 34 now). Mind you that has been on and off over the years but I still play when I can (as a matter of fact I will be playing this weekend). I think that people that "Role Play" and play games like DND are truely unique. I believe that we look at the real world differently. We see and anaylize problems differently to solve them. We are "Outside of the Box" type thinkers.

I just think that it is funny that when you post questions like this or about PC's and Games alot of times people that reply will usually say that they are kind of geeky or geekish. Hell maybe "Geek" is cool these days. If playing DND makes me a geek then I am 100% geek and will die a geek along with all the player sheets I have ever generated over the years. Hell if I decide to be burnt to ashes maybe they can start the fire with all my books and character sheets. lol

I agree that role players are unique people. I've know a lot of them, and they are very different from societal "norms". I have found that most of them are also a bit more intresting than those people who call themselves normal.

And I don't really look at the word geek in a negative way any more. It just describes a certain lifestyle very quickly and most people know what I'm refering to when I use it.

But if you have been gaming that long most people would consider you a Geek... Maybe we should make a club *grin*

We do have a club "My Friend" it will be DDO (once i get the game anyway). I am sure that other people will join as well. Young and old really does not matter as long as a person can "role play" DND, I consider them a kindered spirit and welcome them to my table for ale anytime.
Yes I AM A GEEK and nothing will change that...lol

RE: Tabletop

I am certifiably addicted to pnp gaming. I started playing in grade 5, I am now 24, married, with a kid on the way, and I still find time to play every sunday. My group comes over at 10am and leaves at around 2am. I have a set of dice I keep on me for "emergencies", and on more than one occasion I have whipped out a d20 to roll a skill check before i realize i am not playing d&d.
All joking aside, I have met a lot of people, and the ones who I enjoy talking to the most are gamers. They tend to be more creative, better able to think on their feet, etc.

D&D Junkie, been playing table top D&D since 1979, still play weekly at a local gaming store. Other than that I'm perfectly normal ... yeah, that's it. My wife would argue that point ;o)

Are you sure we don't have the same wife...lol
I have a kid that is 8 and he looks and reads my DND books. I guess he will soon be another player for the DM to deal mess with.
