MMOFPS? Interesting...

The trailers for this game look very interesting, but I'm curious as to how a "MMOFPS" will play... Anyone have any thoughts on this? Do you think it is going to be RPG-esque or mostly play like a normal FPS with thousands of players?

Sure don't. I thought Huxley was the first to do this... Do you have a link I could check out?

Yknow what, screw it... instead of making a 6000 word novel post, I'll just write it out as an article later ;)

Re: MMOFPS? Interesting...

To my knowledge, Planetside was the first MMOFPS, though as such, that game lacks a whole lot of the "MMO" part, with very little story and immersion. Huxley looks like it has the MMO and FPS parts down pat, and I hope they have a dash of the RPG in there as well, for an intriguing plot.

I've been waiting for something like this for a long time. I was hopeful with Planetside, but as I said, it had many major pitfalls. I like MMORPG's, but I've always disliked the lack of skill involved. The fact that it's all about grinding, and the combat (usually) doesn't involve actually aiming and personal skill. Incorporating FPS elements like that, along with beautiful graphics and keeping an RPG-istic plot and involvement... would be amazing.

I really hope they pump that game out soon (not to say I want them to rush an unfinished product, but it already looks so good!). The trailer said by summer of 2006... I'd heard a rumor speculating this January or February, but, I doubt it. That's a shame. Their site also says 3Q 2006/Korea... Does that mean it's only going to be available for beta to Koreans?

Re: MMOFPS? Interesting...

One of the main problems with an MMO hybrid is who to cater to; the RPG fans or the FPS fans. This brings about the HUUUGE debate over how much skill should count vs stats. Basically, a lot of RPG players will be put off if they realize they can spend 200 hours in the game and still get destroyed by a better aimer who is newer. On the other hand, fps players won't like it if they find out that they can't kill someone simply because their target has played the game a little longer. The issue here is whether a middle ground can be found that is attractive to both sets of players, while trying to avoid being a "tweener" that doesn't successfully grab either audience. One option I've heard includes making higher-level players have (either through level skill usage limits where lower levels simply can't equip better guns, or some other means) better weapons, which in turn have better accuracy/damage/rate of fire/etc. This is exactly what Twilight War will do.

Re: MMOFPS? Interesting...

Think about it this way... whether they say it or not the fact that this game is going to have quests will instill to some degree a factor of grinding. Granted, I would rather FPS my enemies than auto-attack them anyday, but as the difficulty of mobs increases so should a players skill level. What does this mean exactly in a game where ideally speaking all that matters is how quick your mind and trigger finger are? I am considering two things from having played planetside for quite a while. First, a big factor should be, and most probably will be if they are serious about an RPG element, is a players inventory. Second, it is probably safe to assume that depending on faction and/or variation of the race that you choose will grant you different types of abilities as well.

Another thing to consider is how effective a player could be with a certain peice of equipment... for instance, if any of you played RE4 then you know that you could improve your weapons as you gained money and were able to upgrade them.

Well, in the case of Huxley perhaps you could as well, but the one drawback would be that certain restrictions are inacted based upon race, faction, and/or level.

For instance, and this is completely made up by the way, as a standard sapien:one you will be able to upgrade your shotgun to improve damage, reload speed, firing speed, range, and accuracy... etc... etc... to custom specs, but the drawback is you can only max out these abilities at a higher level.

Finally, as a "less" intellegent Alterraver with more base "strength" you might not be able to use the shotgun with the same effectiveness, but perhaps because of your size/strength you could use different types of equipment such as heavier weapons and armor, or two weapons at once. (one in each hand)

I just hope that they can keep the end results balanced and not end up with an uber race/class/gun combo that will always produce a victory.

Re: MMOFPS? Interesting...

Alright first things first. there have been countless MMO's that went with the FPS. You had 10six, Jumpgate, and Planetside to name a few. I beta tested and played each for about 6months or so.
Do I think this game is going to be awesome? I can't fully answer that question without knowing exactly what the class system, upgrades, skills, quests etc... will be like. DO i already have a general idea what this game will be like? I'd have to say yes. This game is going to be alot like planetside combat wise. But even more so its going to be alot like UT2k4. The graphics engine is the same. In my honest opnion this is going to be the next "IN" game to play. RIght now its World of Warcraft, in my opnion this game when released is going to be WoW's demise. I know tons of people that got bored with Planetside, that got bored with CS source and other various FPS games. So when this game comes out expect all of those people to leave whatever game they are playing right now. Also expect alot of classic MMORPG fans to check this one out. IT already looks like its going to have a decent story, and it also looks like your still going to have to grind and do quests to move forward in the game and not get the crap kicked out of you in PvP.
What am i looking forward to the most in this game? I'd have to say the aspect of team play. It's looking like a great MMORPGFPSRTS (thats long) your going to have your guilds/clans showing up and alot of teamwork and what will probably be an awesome community.

Re: MMOFPS? Interesting...

I was reading computer gaming world's November cover story about Huxley, and the article has a lot of details from the head designer about how Huxley will achieve it's mmofps. Here's some snippets taken at random from the article.

Communities where clans own their own sections of the 50 square block city, and individuals have apartments, their own wheels, etc. Brick & mortar shopping, bartering & supervised taxable trading. Cash is earned through assignments emailed from NPC brokers, mercenaries & middlemen. Kim the head designer states that "Regular RPG growth systems make no sense in FPes. Why should someone do more damage because he's "stronger" than an opponent using the same weapon?" "We prefer unreal tournament's twitch play to the slower more plodding pace of some military shooters". "We're placing more weight on players' skill than on their characters' stats so that a talented player can prevail over a better-armed enemy, even with a basic rifle."
To help out nubes: We encourage cross-class party play. Higher level players get experience points for helping out lower-level players, and the bigger the level gap, the bigger the bonus."
120 player army vs army clashes. Separate voice-chat channels operate in a chain of command that links clan leaders while letting clan members talk amongst themselves. During army level engagements, - splicing first person shooting with roleplaying - "Four players from each faction can descend into the Lunarite mines and fight for the energy source in the middle of massive engagements" Kim says. "It's Quake Arena - like close quarters combat".

Since I don't play a lot of games,
A question: The chain of command voice links - It sounds really great not to have to stop the action to type out messages to team members. Is that something that's been out there a while, or is it something new?

Regards

Re: MMOFPS? Interesting...

Regarding the in game voice communications: Battlefield 2 has the VOIP in game commo. The faction (e.g. USMC) commander and squad leaders can communicate with each other by pressing one key. Squad members can talk with each other by pressing another key. Not everyone uses it, my outfit still uses Teamspeak for our squad communications. VOIP improves gameplay, particularly with a pick-up squad on a public server. Squads that work together will always defeat a mob mindlessly zerging from spawn to spawn. It doesn't just help with PvP battles. Regular missions (quests) still favor the organized party over the mob.
