Quests? Wha...?

Apparently there will be quests in Huxley, which makes me thing of RPG's, not FPS games. How the heck are they going to pull that off? I'm interested to see exactly how they're putting this together...

Re: Quests? Wha...?

well, as the game has RP elements, it'll be like any other MMORPG, except that YOU control where your bullets hit.

That's a good take on it. I didn't think of it so much that way, but I bet you're just about on the money. It'll be interesting to see how they pull the elements of FPS and RPG together.

I recon it will be something like the Jedi Knight games and Star Wars: Galaxies. You can go First Person or 3rd etc. Just like guild wars but you control your character's gun as well as them moving.

Finally a MMO that requires skill!

Lol

(...well i guess in guild wars you needed skill, but there were still way to many newbs because of the whole "free" thing)

Re: Quests? Wha...?

Yeah. Here's a random example I can think of...

You're playing an Alterraver, and you've been given a mission to go clear out a warehouse that is rumored to be the storage facility of the scientist who created Lunarites, the one thing that everybody seems to be after. You get to the warehouse and bust in, but not only is the place already ransacked and empty of whatever it once contained, but there are plenty of scythe-clawed critters inside. (Whatever they're called, I haven't found a definitive name for them yet...)
So you get ambushed by the NPC enemies, and are trying to fight your way out, when another player (one of the Syn [sapiens]) jumps you.
Whether victorious or not, you'd likely head back to whoever or whatever employed you for that mission in the first place, and in some kind of NPC dialogue, tell them that the warehouse was ransacked before you got there. You're rewarded for having done the job, whether in money to buy new gear with, or an actual quest-only item, though plot-wise the mission was fruitless. It might lead on to another quest from that same NPC, or he'd send you elsewhere.

And that, generally, is how things might work. :P
Ideally, quest-only rewards would be onetime deals that can't be found elsewhere or looted, thus making them important (and hopefully tradable), which would lead to a good MMO economy, which is important for most MMO's.
Just my thoughts.

Computer Gaming World did a cover story on Huxley for their November issue. In the story these creatures are described as "Hybrids > Said to be the sterile offspring of Sapien-Alternative cross-species pairings, nonplayable Hybrids haunt Huxley's underground."

There appears to be more than just the scytheclawed variety too... just giving you a heads up and if you can get a copy of the issue check it out because the story is awesome with tons of screens I haven't even seen on the net.

Re: Quests? Wha...?

Further information from that cover story described the quest content. Player characters can learn of rumors leading to quests from local NPC's in Nostalonia (Sapiens) or Eska (Alternatives). Such as "recover stolen shipment of guns" or such. Then you either get a questing group or hire mercenary NPC's to flesh out your party before descending into the sewers or wastelands to fulfill your mission. Success brings you rewards as in swag from the dead Hybrids, money from your employer.

Quests serve as a way to gain better equipment and experience. PvP action comes from the battlefield servers which gains prestige, perks and so forth. That is primarily the clan/outfit/gang's rewards to deter solo players from dominating the battlefield servers.

Whatever huxley's quest system is going to be i'm confident that it will easy to gain quests (like Guildwars exclamation point) and i've heard rumors of clan based quests as well.
