The ships of Pirates of the Burning Sea are exact replicas of ships that sailed the seas of the Caribbean. The fast deadly cutter, able to speed through the waters but pack a punch just as deadly as larger boats. Or the Heavy Frigate which lives up to its name as a beast of the seas. King of the seas this boat packs a punch.
I provided a link below to the PotBS Official Site which has an extreme indepth details of the ingame ships. So which vessel shall you command upon the seas?

A Sloop-of-War, who could need anything more than speed, besides its the best way to board a ship or get out of there quickly

As a Naval officer I would guess I'd start out low, in an armed cutter or ketch carrying dispatches. Then I'd rise to a sloop of war, a heavy frigate (my favorite ship for its' weight of guns/speed combination) and finally a 3rd rate ship of the line.
But if I was either a Pirate or Adventurer then I'd want a Xebec. These fast ships are perfect as raiders/privateers. They can sail close to the wind and have the best chance for outrunning a pursing sloop-of-war or frigate.
For those of you who are familar with Patrick O'Brien's "Lucky Jack Aubrey" series of books then the Xebec should be recogniable as the antagonist in the duel with Jack's sloop of war "Sophie" in Master and Commander. That Xebec was a French privateer which outgunned the little sloop. She was captured only after a fierce boarding action.

Xeb or cutter for me. But, since I'm a merchant mariner in the really real world, the galleon calls to me...
