Technical Help

Ok, this is the system I purchased last spring... (I paid close to $25 for this) (HP xw8000)

Its a dual Xeon 3.06 with 4 gigs of ram. I upgraded the scsi to a 2120s Controller with adaptec array of three 210g drives runnign at raid 3. For a video card a Nvidia Quadro FX 3000 with a simple Toshiba Multimedia center. My cable is Comcast 3meg, I am the only one that uses the internet line and its test great.

I am not really braging here, I really just want to know why BF2 looks horrible. The frame rate is really bad. Sometimes I just hang there for a sec, and end up dead.

I play CS source, every day. I use to play BFV, and was pretty satified with the frame rate. I am pretty intellegent in the computer field, as I make my living programming Firewalls, Routers, and Servers for the lifetime of the products (15+ years)

Any tweeks? Ideas? Maybe the latest driver for the Quadro does not like it? (I have 20 application settings I could try).

Or, I would hate to say this, maybe the game is just like this? Any help would be gratefully appreciated before I hire someone to look at what I am doing wrong for BF2.

Re: Technical Help

LOL, oh boy.

First off I’m sure you will get a ton of posts from people mocking your workstation parts, those people are ignorant. I have a workstation and it runs games fine.

The problems are NOT in your hardware, I’m sure you and I both know that but it’s for others. Games are made and tested on workstation grade PC’s so ther eis not issue with them.

It’s been my experience (with workstations) that lag is due to poor driver choices. If you care my workstation is “roughly” the same but I have opterons and a faster quadro. My problem was that nvidias drivers for quadros are notoriously horrible for games, you really have to hunt and peck, and then tweak the hell out of them.

Also BF2 is coded like CRAP, even on my gaming rig (3.2p4ee oc’d past 4.0, 2 gb pc4000 6800gt) I get issues. Frankly there are some MASSIVE issues they need to patch and EA is notoriously horrible for patching.

As a workstation user- When playing games it often makes more sense to just force the load to a single CPU and not f-around with dual core. I know it sounds basic but for some goofy reason people code software like crap and it won’t auto go for that, tweak your drivers and go to force that.

If that fails there is a “risky” fix. It’s not risky if you know what you are doing and why, if you don’t you might vape a vid card with several grand. The cheat is this, nvidias cards are (for the most part) similar between gamer and workstation grade, the changes are minor. You can trick one card into behaving like another (not exact but good enough). If your problem is vid card related, and if you have the know how this route might just fix everything in one fell swoop. The real reason for going this route is risking a driver swap and running with it. Granted it’s a pain in the ass but with boot disks, and other shortcuts it can become fairly painless.

BTW $25 seems a stupid price for said PC.

Honestly it’s probably a mix of drivers and BF2 just being stupid.

Re: Technical Help

Thanks very much. I will try to disable the 2nd CPU and load some older drivers, maybe the one from the website for this HP. I will post my results.

Are there good videos that I can see the performance of BF2 in a MPG or AVI format? Just so i know the frame rate look and feel to a regular user. I am not going to even think about the trailer as a banchmark.

As you probably know I paid $25,000 for the PC, and use it for work related apps. But it seems to see more Counter Strike use.

Re: Technical Help

The drivers you would want are the quadro drivers, I doubt you need them specifically from HP. Also for all we know it could be some bonked setting within the drivers. Case in point my workstation is used for CAD, and the settings for that don’t translate great to games.

There is another (though this is remote) possibility. Workstation grade computers use ECC ram, desktops do not. ECC is a touchy subject and rather technical, but it’s a known fact that it’s slower at the same speeds (even if more stable). I honestly don’t think that has a chance in hell of changing performance in game, but you “could” try to much around with ram settings in bios and see if that changes anything.

I don’t know of any current vids in .mpg or .avi, and that wouldn’t help. Most game vids are altered when put it out so you will never get a real feel for what frames the players rig is pushing.

There is another setting that could be screwing with things, but I don’t know enough about your PC to make a call, so forgive me if this doesn’t apply to you. Several workstation MOBO’s use AGP and not PCIE, which is fine since there is no need for PCIE yet. However AGP has a rather fussy issue with it’s aperature size. You can change this in bios. If your app is to low it’s going to hurt, and if it’s to high and your PC goes to look for main memory it’s going to hurt. Theoretically this should only be a problem if your app causes you to run out of main memory and then you run into a world of hurt, and this is one of the reasons BF2 is considered a “2gb of ram needed” level game. I don’t think this would be an issue with you (given that you have 4gb) but like I said AGP can be fussy. Try going into bios and see what it’s set for. You only need 128 really, so if it’s higher turn it down… on the other hand if it’s at only 128 try pushing it up to 256 and seeing if that will pick up some of the slack the card is having now. If that works go for 512 (note nobody in their right mind should EVER use 512 unless you have over 2gb of ram).

Re: Technical Help

hahaha

but why u paid like 25000 dollar for such a pc...? thats like 26000 euro or something... for that price I can get 20 gb RAM, Intel 3,8 gHz processor, 2 terabyte harddisk, and a veeeeeery good graphics card. Where I buy my pc parts the 6800 GT is only 250 euro :S... if u REALLY paid 25,000 for that pc you must have bought it in one of the most expensive shops in the world... lol...

Your ignorance is funny. Go back to the coffee shop :s

But anyways I did buy a another system. Top of the line specs, and I still think BF could run a little better.

The Workstation is doing what it does best, Pax.

RE: Technical Help

Saito, thanks for the post. I just read it.

I just tried BF2 on the work machine, and using only 2 gig's of ram seems to work alot better! No idea why. However, it does slow down my radiology apps.

That is strange!
