Before dismissing him just do some things:
- press F key for the mirror mode, that way every member of the party will do everything that you do
- if your character just stays there and do nothing be careful what you selected for the main weapon. My characters did nothing in these situation:
- I selected by mistake a resurrect scroll(probably your problem)
- I put them on “wait” mode(not your problem because if you say you are in the beginning that means you didn’t define yet a key for it )
- my mage remained without spell point, but in that case a red message appear in your screen, pretty hard not to notice
If here is not listed your problem and you just hate your party member you can just sent it to the inn and get him later if you change your mind. To do this select you character inventory(I) and press the icon(upper left corner – just left to your name) that has a man with a red arrow that points right

There is a combat magic spells, i think its lesser firebolt, that you can use without a level in combat magic.

You’ll get a character specialized in combat magic in the second town. For now if you what to have all the classes in you party from the beginning you have only one possibility
- you combat magic(and use the orange scrolls to increase that skill)
- Lothar melee
- Deru ranged
- Taar nature magic
At the mercenary difficulty I didn’t get a combat mage, I was a dual wielder, so Lothar and the other two were Deru(ranged+nature magic) and Taar(nature magic)…I manage quite nicely. After you finish the mercenary you’ll get your mage and due to a bug an extra party member that you should get in eltite, but you’ll get it earlier

Have a little more patience you’ll find Finala in the Aman’lu hills. After you do a quest for her, she will offer to join your party
