GM saves the day

This is not the first time this has happened but I wanted to say something.

Last night we were in a mission and in one part of the sewer we were getting hit by "nictus" emergy through the wall. I sent a petition to a GM figuring he would get bakc to me eventually so id do it before we cleared the room (last room). well he came on and I told him the problem. he told me he saw quite a few mobs and he was waiting till they were clear. So we clear the last group and then he brings the nova out. We defeated him and after a few seconds he asked if it was complete. I told him yes and thanks and he asked if there was anything else.

I think many of us have had problems with the game from time to time, but my experience is the GMs friendly helpful and pretty quick.

Yeah I have been helped by the GMs of late too...in a mission (train mission) to rescue someone...the map was immense and I couldn't find them at all, the GM came on and TPd me to the last mob :)

They are great!

Re: GM saves the day

I think I mentioned this before, but I'm not sure. I had a CoT mission where one of the glowies (the last one, of course) was in the middle of a bunch of CoT Crystals. So every time I clicked on it, the Crystals would interrupt me. I tried all sorts of angles and timing, but nothing worked. So I petitioned a GM and they moved it to a nice safe place out of Crystal range. :)

I had another situation where I had to rescue a guy in Croatoa. He was a sorcerer who was adept in summoning monsters. He summoned 3 Fir Bolg to help us fight the nasty redcaps. Unfortunately one of his Fir Bolg finished the fight...so because he was a hostage, he decided to follow the Fir Bolg. The downside was, the Fir Bolg was following HIM, because it was hit pet. So they just stood there. I petitioned a GM and they resolved it for me. (they actually just completed the mission for me, I didn't have to do anything)

I've never had ANY problems with the GMs in the game. They've all been great.

Re: GM saves the day

The GMs in City of Heroes are, in comparison to other MMORPGs, exceptional. They actually respond to your petitions relatively quickly with more than just a modicum of care. Heck, even the Testmasters in the beta were useful.

There is a right way and several hundred wrong ways to petition a GM (or CSR, as most modern-day GMs really are instead of the old-fashioned GMs we idolize). Since it can be frustrating to see petitions unresolved, please keep the following in mind.

GMs are Human Beings™
A GM is commonly a standard Size 3 Human Being™ installed with basic modules such as "Common Sense" and "Literacy - Basic". Due to occupation requirements, many GMs acquire modules from the onset of their job like "Backbone" and "Customer Empathy - Basic". Please note that due to the work's hazardous environment, modules tend to degrade and even burn out. Companies commonly react from this problem by either getting rid of the Human Being™, or promoting it.

Re: GM saves the day

The GM's in this game are AWESOME-- and that is what sold me on the game in the first place. They will not only rush to your aid (considering the thousands of other complaints in addition to your own), but they will follow up and make sure everything works afterwards.

The only thing is, I've been on teams where they can't find the last thing because they weren't looking hard enough, and they petitioned. That slows down the GM response for people who have legitimate problems (mobs stuck inside a wall, etc.)

I feel strongly that before addressing a GM I have to have proof positive that something is malfunctioning within the map. I believe it is an abuse of a good thing to use a GM to complete a mission just because you don't feel like looking for something.

Just my 2 cents.

Coming from an extremely strong Customer Service/Tech background, I totally understand this. Unfortunately, most companies are SO focused on getting their stats up that they neglect the one major thing that causes productivity to drop significantly...Burn Out. When one person on a team burns out, it increases the Burn Out factor for the rest of the team exponentially. That one person complains about "Issue A" to their co-workers and then "Issue A" suddenly becomes a major issue with ALL the co-workers. Usually this is after the employee has complained about "Issue A" with their supervisor, who just simply wrote it off as griping.

I was a supervisor for a team of about 60 people in the absolute worst environment possible for burn out. End User Tech Support. It's a job where you're doing helpdesk AND customer service work all at the same time. Unlike an internal helpdesk, if a customer gets rude (just rude, not offensive), you don't have any outlet or recourse. In an internal helpdesk, you can file a report with your manager who can take it up with their manager and so forth. With End User Tech Support, there's no option to do this, so you're sitting there stewing over it. I always encouraged my teammates to come to me when they had a problem like that. I would usually send them on a 15-20 minute "cool off" break. They could go out side or get a drink or whatever. Because of this and being understanding of these issues, my department was one of the most productive in the company. My techs actually LIKED coming to work every day.

Where was I going with this...

Oh yeah, burn out. So the bottom line is, don't abuse your CSRs/GMs, they're just trying to do their job to the best of their ability. :)

i had the same problem with one of my CoT mission with glowies/crystals that i got help from the GMs. On another CoT mission iu had awhile back that i called in the GMs on was i couldnt find the last gaurd (stinking ghost/wraiths) for a prisoner to finish the mission. i had 2 GMs try to help me on that mission but still even they couldnt find the last guys for me to defeat so the second GM gave me a mission complete for that mission.

Yeah, those Spectral Knights are a bugger now where you lose targetting when they phase shift.

Re: GM saves the day

As a former GM for a MMORPG (won't say which, so don't ask) I found trying to find missing elements (missing NPCs/mobs) in randomly-generated missions to be extremely frustrating. Maybe it was the particular tools I had on hand, but when attempting to locate an element that you could not find "on foot" (in otherwords, finding an element that was supposedly missing/inaccessible to the player without using tools) the element had spawned out of range (in an inaccessible location to the player on the mission playfield). Scripts are usually in place to check and see that all essential elements to successfully complete the mission are there, however sometimes things just don't go right. Randomly-generated missions always have a degree of not functioning properly, however luckily for us it rarely ever happens in City of Heroes.

Re: GM saves the day

Yuh, I have to give a big ole thank you to the GMs, also. I had a cave mission in Croatoa, where I'd sliced and diced all the Fir Bolgs I could find, and still no mission complete, and GM Joshua came on and asked I needed help, spent a few minutes looking around, and said that it needed to be escalated to higher tech support! Woo-Hoo! After a few moments, I was given the mission complete, and GM J asked if everything turned out ok, and also if there was anything else he could do for me. Thx GMs.

Re: GM saves the day

GM's run the show, the man behind the curtain, that sort of thing. Tech support, petitions, all that jazz. They handle bug reports, and ensure fluidity of gameplay. I'm sure someone else can tell you exactly what they do for a living, but all that's really important from a gamer's perspective is the fact that they help when it's needed. Sometimes, you can see them, but usually they're just a non-existant presence. In a nutshell, they're the heroes of heroes. City of Heroes has a really responsive team of GM's consider yourselff lucky.
