Webzen As An Investment

Good Day!!!!
I am an old guy of 49 years with a couple of boys who are 12 & 14. I used to regularly get my butt kicked in Starcraft, Warcraft, Tenaris; and eventually decided I was too old & I got real tired of having my head handed to me & eventually quit.

Buuutttttttt, I did get to thinking about Huxley/Webzen as an investment & I was wondering what you guys thought of the game from that point of view.
Do you think that it'll be popular?
How about acceptance by hard core gamers?
What do you think will be the downside of the game?
What do you think that an investor out to look for -
On the plus side?
On the minus side?

I apoligize in advance if this offends anyone!!!!! Just wanting to send some feelers out to see what people think of the game from an investment point of view. Webzen is currently sitting near it's lows & I am starting to buy in.

Regards

Re: Webzen As An Investment

Well I don't know too much about investing, but I do know a lot about gaming. First of all the fact that this game is going to be playable on the Xbox 360 already makes available to a larger fan base than would possible if it were PC only. The fact that it will be playable on PC as well only increases the fan base that it could potentially have.

Another big factor to consider is pay for play. If the developers decide to charge a monthly rate then less people are probably going to play it, but as can be seen in the past with groundbreaking titles such as Everquest that cost isn't always a factor. If people were willing to pay 10-15 dollars a month for that game, it's likely that they will pay at least that much for a newer game with superior graphics and a FPS action style combat system in an RPG which has never been done before, and that brings me to my final point...

The game is revolutionary. If I had the money I would probably invest it in this game because not only is it backed by Microsoft (xbox), and Webzen which are both successful gaming companies, but it's also going to be a one of a kind game, that caters to specific audience. The market for this game is in the fact that there's nothing else out there like it that I know of, and chances are that there isn't going to be until this game is released and people see how successful it is. Granted, it could flop, but it's very hard for me to imagine this game sucking. The E3 demo video was enough to make me drool and more than enough to make me personally want to play it. The only way I could see the game sucking is if there are a lot of bugs and/or balance issues that the developers fail to address. On the other hand, it could be an AMAZING game, maybe even the best ever since the playstyle is totally revolutionary. If it isn't pay for play, chances are that tons of people are going to play it. Even if it is I will still be playing it as long as the monthly charges aren't out of the traditional MMO range. People have never been able to play a game like this before due to the fact that there's never been an MMOFPSRPG to date, but if it is done correctly I see it with the potential to be the next Everquest, since when EQ was released it was the only truely 3D MMORPG, and when Huxley is released in 2006 it will also be one of a kind.

Re: Webzen As An Investment

Some other things to consider:

First, it's not the first mmorpg/fps hybrid... and not the only one that will be released in the next few years by a long shot. There's at least 4 or 5 that I know of that could fit into this category, and you have to even consider some of the other similar-styled ones in the past like Phantasy Star Online (not an FPS, but it pushed away from the auto-attack mold). Personally I would guess that Huxley will do okay simply due to its engine. It will, without a doubt, be the best-looking game of its genre in its generation. This will probably be enough to sell a moderate amount regardless of gameplay.

My biggest problem with the game so far is that they haven't realeased much ACTUAL gameplay information. That, and not graphics, will dictate whether it survives in the long-term or not. Pure FPS games can live off of revolutionary graphics technology by selling for 3 months, a game like this needs to sell for much longer to realize its success.

My personal opinion is that I wouldn't put TOO much into investing in this game until they release more information on how it will PLAY, because that's where the real difficulties in structuring these mmo hybrids (okay after 1000 uses I am officially coining that term) lies. So far all we really know about Huxley is the basic genre and the fact that it will look gorgeous. This will likely be enough to keep it from completely tanking, but is certainly not enough to fulfill its financial potential.

Then again, if they're hitting lows, and you don't see the price going much lower, it might be worth the gamble. I'd still say not to put a whole lot into it, but maybe dumping a little in now and then waiting to see how it develops, and possibly dumping in some more further along the line might be a good idea (assuming you like the direction it's moving still).

Re: Webzen As An Investment

Thrax & Concrete,

Thank you very much for taking the time to post your insights, I am in your debt. I was thinking that the stock is good enough for some buys, so I got in at $4.79, $4.87, $5.17 & $5.68; which is an average price of $4.96 per share. With SUN (Soul of the Ultimate Nation)starting it's 10,000 man beta test II on October 25, I am hoping that this stock has seen it's lows & is on it's way to a triple. I've read about stocks that double & triple, but have never owned one. Maybe this time.

Again Thank You, & Best Regards

Odds on this game flopping? i'd say 50-1

This is going to be the next big thing. I'm already looking forward to it. And i've only done that with WoW. and look how well that game has done.

Re: Webzen As An Investment

Well the reason I'm apprehensive is simply because they've given absolutely ZERO indication of how the game play will actually function.

We know there'll be good graphics, and that it'll be a mmo fps/rpg hybrid of some sort, but they haven't gone into much detail at all about how it will be structured. They seem to want it to remain focused on individual player skill rather than statistics and items, which is fine, but then what will drive you to play?

If they're relying solely on faction-based PvP politics to keep the "story" so to speak moving, they could have a problem.

mmo hybrids are going to be very very difficult to design effectively for the long run, since it's hard to guess how the economies, communities, etc will develop.

Personally I'm encouraged by what I've read in interviews and such, but I haven't seen enough to convince me yet that this game will be anything special. I certainly hope it is, of course.
