Farming. Tips/Lessons to farm.

To all those who want to learn how to farm! Welcome! I just joined a few days ago, and I usually post an another guild wars forum. Since I've been looking around here, I've noticed there are not a lot of people who know how to farm, or ever thought about it. Now remember, farming is for ANYONE and can be done by ANY BUILD. Now, you just have to know if you can do it alone, or do it better with others.

Guidelines to Farming:

1. Remember, the BIGGEST factor to getting good drops is always RANDOM. You can not expect yourself to get a crystalline sword the first time you farm.

2. Patience. I can not stress this enough to the people who I teach this too. It may take 1 run, or 100 runes to get any kind of gold item.

3. Area and Who. The level of the area, and the kinds of mobs you kill determine your drops. If you are at an area where monsters are 20+ levels, the better the drops. What you kill also determines what kind of drops you get. Some monsters drop armor, some drop just weapons, some drop collector's items.

4. Knowing your skills is a must. Obviously, you'll have to find it if you can farm alone, or you are better off with groups.

5. Now this may seem a bit iffy to others, but I find it very useful in farming solo, or in a group. Try to use a skill to finish off an enemy. I find this raises the chances of getting a better item. If it sounds too simple, why not anyways? Finishes them off anyways. Also, when in farming in a group, your chances of getting an item are always raised.

Places that will test your farming skills:
Nolani Academy
Yak's Bend on the way torwards Ice Tooth Cave
Beacon's Perch, on the way torwards Kryta *Ettins*
Riverside Province
Henge of Denravi
Port Sledge, the Grawl
Augury Rock, Prophet's path the Minotaurs and Griffons
Elona Reach Mission

*will edit more later*

Common Farm Builds

--------------------------------------------------

Warrior/Monk - Minotaur/Griffons Farming.
Location: Prophet's Path, Augury Rock.
What I use.

Skills: Cyclone Axe, Bonetti's Defense, Balthazar's Aura, Symbol of Wrath, Healing Hands, Vigorous Spirit, Live Vicariously, Balthazar's Spirit.

How to do it:

When you first get out, cast the two enchantments. Start running. Remember to OUTRUN the DEVOURER'S, for they will use distracting shot whenever possible. Aggro the minotaurs. If this is your first time doing this, I suggest taking 2 groups at a time. However, with this build, and with practice, you can take on all the minotaurs/griffons +2 bosses if they are there.

When you stop to fight, cast healing hands right away. Right after that, cast symbol of wrath THEN Balthazar's spirit. Cast vigourous spirit RIGHT away. RIGHT before Healing Hands is down, use cyclone axe THEN put on bonetti's defense to keep yourself alive. Keep cycling between cyclone axe and bonetti's defense to keep yourself alive, then repeat the healing hands/symbol of wrath/balthazar's aura.

-------------------------------------------------------
Warrior (Who cares about secondary? :P)
Glads Def (E)
Defensive Stance
Shield Stance
Bonetti's Defense
Riposte
Deadly Riposte
Galrath Slash
Healing Signet

10+1+1 Strength
11+2 Swordsmanship
10+1 Tactics

Knight's helm and boots, glads for the rest (major vigor, major absorb)
15 over 50 short sword from Droknar's Weapon crafter
Collector shield with stance bonus

The place to be? Why Riverside Province of course.
Why? Lots of melee (justiciars, zealots, knights) and archers.
Tough stuff? Empathy, searing heat, and reversal of fortune (goddam damned clerics lol).
Extra Goodies? 4 chests that drop items from ANYWHERE in the game - that's right, i found a Shadowy Husk (usually dropped by worm things in FoW during Wailing Lord quest).

Notes: You should never run out of mana (i've never even gotten below half), you should have enough defense and blocking capabilities to stay always over 50% (use signet in conjunction with stances that allow it, i.e. glads/shields).

How to do it:
With 4 stances, you simply cycle them. I use Defensive stance to aggro them (since i can't use any skills, so i aggro and attack the caster). You can pop the caster for about 50 dmg per hit (try to kill b4 the stance runs out, you'll see why in a second). With defensive stance on, your army should be enough that any knights hitting you do 0 dmg.
With the caster dead, or not, cycle on gladiators defense. Now, if the caster is dead, you have two knights casting shouting IWAY. Now they attack faster - meaning they get hurt more by glads def. At this point, u can use galraths, but dont use ripostes yet (it takes dmg away from glads).
Next, put up shield stance, and spam ripostes and deadly ripostes and galraths and normal attacks until they drop. Usually, they're not dead yet. By this time, glads should be back up so put it on. If not, fall back on Bonetti's (also good if mana is inching down). Heal if you have to, but don't use it during bonettis or defensive unless you're desparate, otherwise you cancel the stance.
Problems: Try not to aggro too many priests. They cast a really, really annoying spell that a la Divine Intervention. Look it up. You'll understand immediately. Don't worry too much about empathy, just hack up the mesmer, while in defensive, toss on glads, and signet yourself back to full.
The 2 damned clerics I find on the path i usually use are pains in the ass. Best plan? Just run, they can't hurt you much and takes too long. If you're a perfectionist, wait for their RoFs to time out, hit them, they cast RoF again, wait, etc.... If you see bosses, it's probably not a good idea to engage. I did manage to kill the Necromancer Necrid Horseman boss, but it took a little while.
Groups of ghouls, hellhounds, and executioners are easily dispatched using the aforementioned method.

Hint: Avoid the marshes like the plague, they reak of poison archers and bone dragons that don't draw on your skills. Try not to attack the towers directly too since your sword isn't quite that long (though the knights guarding it are tasty targets :P).

So, this sounds pretty boring? Well, it's a change in tactics (pun intended), and the cash haul in is decent (you can either sell the tons of armors you find to the merchants, or salvage them for cloth, iron, steel, and linen). And the staffs are a good source of wood lol.

Happy Tanking

-------------------------------------------------------
Warrior/Necro Minotaurs/Griffons
Enfeebling Blood, Victory is Mine!, Mark of Pain, Bonetti's Defense. 12 dead griffons in 20s. The only problem is, is when the hexed one walks away. Takes some practice to get.

-------------------------------------------------------

Necromance/Mesmer Build
This is a fun build to try out for people who would rather not a monk class in there solo build. Be warned it will require some practice before getting it right but when you do start getting good with it, you will want to rub it in those solo monk faces with all there shiny runes and tatoos.

Desert Griffons are location outside of Augury Rock and drop a couple purples and gold items every run.

N/Me Griffon Hunter
12 inspiration
16 curses
Spiteful Spirit {E}
Arcane Echo
Insidious Parasite
Enfeebling Blood
Energy Tap
Parasitic Bond
Mantra of Resolve
Physical Resistance

~70 AR armor will help too.
~You can drop some inspiration or curse and put into soul reap.
~I am using an axe with the modification 'Heavy' which makes enfeebling blood last 20% longer. I am currently trying to find an axe grip of shelter +7
~Always keep Physical Resistance active and if you get jumped by Rockshot's use Mantra of Resolve so they dont interupt you.

When you are gonna pick a fight with the minatours or griffons start off spamming Parasitic Bond on all of them, then once there all on top of you attacing you use enfeebling blood on the center most one, then acane echo and insdious parasite, then use energy tap to gain some energy and use your extra insdious parasite on a diff foe attacking you.

Now that you have them doing almost no damage and 2 of them healing you, wait for 15 energy and then use Spiteful Spirit on center most foe.

Wait for 5 energy and use energy tap again then use enfeebling blood to renew it.

Cycle through the targets and find the enemies with little health left and cast parasitic bond so when they die you get 120+ health.

Pretty much use Insidious and Spiteful on whatever is left over and right before he dies use Parasitic for your 120+ health.

With that build and strategy you can solo each group of griffons or minatours faster then other classes can, but we can only do it 1 group at a time.

Make sure you stay still while fighting them, last thing you want is a rockshot spawning and interupting every action you do.

------------------------------------------------------

ELE/MONK
All 5 superior runes... 105 health
Ocassaionly I bring the quest item from cities of ascalon for the -50 health and then use a major rune..but thats personal preference)

ZEALOTS FIRE
BALTH AURA
ETHER RENEWAL
DIVINE BOON
PROECTION BOND
ESSENCE BOND
BALTH SPIRIT
HEALING BREEZE OR SYMBOL OF WRATH

use 16 energy storage
use 12 protect for the enchant
the rest in smiting

When you cast enchant bond remember that you will have a -3 energy but will get back 2. This means every single attack will deal you -1 energy. This is why it is important to have 16 energy storage and a +12 icon. (i use smiting rod/monk icon) the amount of energy u have is the key obviously!
AFTER enchanting yourself, cast ether renewal and spam boon to get all your sps back!)

You can take 5 at a time now, but to start work with just 3 of the aataxes. The whole key to this build is ETHER RENEWAL. at 16 skill the energy you get back is 5 energy for each enchantment and 20 health per enchantment!!!. Every chance you get you have to cast this. The main spell i use to regen sps/health is divine boon since it costs 5 and has a 1 second recharge. Between the boon itself's healing and the +20 per enchant i can completely recharge myself before the 10 second time is up! As you see the ether renewal flashing that it is going to end, cast balth aura and hopefully u get it off..it depends on the breaks...regardless if you can cast it before the ether renewal runs out...you get back 16 energy. I normally cast 4-5 boons (which damage each time with zealots) and then cast balth aura.. that usually maxes out the 10 seconds lasting time of ether renewal. Throughout the fight if u need to heal just use divine boon and you should be fine. If you feel more comfortable using healing breeze throughout the fight to compensate for the bleeding you can do that too and just give up symbol of wrath.
Just remember..energy management is the key. Make sure u dont try and use balth aura till the last cast of ether renewal and to always have it on. It does take longer than the monk build, but hey, not everyone wants to be a monk.

*will continue to post as time goes on*

Hopefully this comes handy to everyone that wants to learn.

Later to come:
Monk farming- UW solo

**I do not take full credit here, for I have learned from various players along the way.**

Farming with OTHERS

When farming with others, you also need patience. Remember that even though item drops are random, so if someone else gets a gold item than you, tough, just hope.

When you PLAN to farm in a group, try to know how hard the area is, and see the minimum people of going at it. The less people, the more drops for all. But sometimes the harder it becomes.

*more to come*

-Sorrow's Furnace
-Fissure of Woe
-Under World
-War Camp

Re: Farming. Tips/Lessons to farm.

Excellent farming guide, I have a W/Me that I use to farm occasionally in Divinity Coast. I was wondering if you have any suggestions for an E/Mo though in higher areas like the Crystal Desert and what not.

An Ele/Monk solo farming? Can do. The only problem is that the build I will post up won't be as strong as before because of the nerfs, but it still works.

Re: Farming. Tips/Lessons to farm.

A guide? Hm. Interesting.

Well, I don't know where I stated that, but I have just joined these forums a few weeks ago. So I'm keeping up with two guild wars forums just because I have the time too.

Don't I have to be an admin or be somewhat promoted to submit a guide? Don't know. Or don't answer, I'll eventually find out an answer.

But in the mean time, I'm still organizing things and I think this is the best place to put it for now, and so that this can be discussed.

Would like to submit different guides though :)

Re: Farming. Tips/Lessons to farm.

If it's not too much to ask, I would like to ask this community to send me pm's or posts here about their farming experiences? I'm trying to figure out whole different factors to farming, and figure out a way how to give people ideas to expand their knowledge about the guild wars community.

Even though farming is just looked on as a way of just making money, it actually holds more to if it one opens an eye and accepts it. It involves a lot of real life economic situations. It opens a person to figure out the demands of people, and why they demand it.

Farming is way of exploring different ideas. Weakenesses and strengths of one person is shown upon, but of course, only in these certain situations. It can show what works for a person, or what does not.

Besides, its fun sometimes. :) If not taken too seriously, like me whenever I'm having a bad day.

Re: Farming. Tips/Lessons to farm.

Well my first farming experience was with Cris, a guildmate of mine. He brought his smite monk to Divinity Coast, and had my nuker come along. After a while he told me he was going to sit back and heal me once in a while if I needed it. To this day I still solo farm that run, because of some of the tricks he showed me.

Using this build for my E/Mo:

Fire Magic:14
Energy Storage:12
Healing Prayers:9

And this Skill Set:

Flare
Phoenix
Firestorm
Meteor
Meteor Storm
Healing Breeze
Elementalist Attunement (Elite)
Aura of Restoration

Works anywhere up to the Desert, then it gets a little tough with the devourers and what not.

Re: Farming. Tips/Lessons to farm.

Not bad at all. I like that. Soloing with it? So I'm just taking a guess you take your time on timing and deciding on where you should be. Or you just go at it. :)

Would recommend that to others.

Re: Farming. Tips/Lessons to farm.

My solo build is of coarse the 55 monk...even though alot was nerfed regarding this, there are other ways to get the job done. My 55 build is:
1) 5 superior runes..1 will not stack...need the -75 health
2) The -50 health focus item you get from Cities of Ascalon quest

Attribute Points
Healing: 13
Smiting: 16
Protection: 8
Divine Favor: 6

Skill Setup
Mending (+4)
Balthazars Spirit
Healing Breeze
Protective Spirit
Balthazars Aura
Shield of Judgement (elite)
Zealots Fire
Bonettis Defense

If im farming Hydras i switch Shield with Spell Breaker

Hope this helps you in putting together a guide

Thank you very much. :) This is a better version for soloing the underworld than what I had in mind. Just need something to replace Zealot's Fire. Very good indeed.

Re: Farming. Tips/Lessons to farm.

For the timing on my E/Mo, I cast aura of restoration, then elemental attunement. I then agro the group together (usually four drakes or six tengus/mergoyles) when the start coming in I cast healing breeze to resist the first wave of attacks. Once they are hostiles are huddled around me I cast Meteor Shower to beat them down for about ten seconds, after shower cast firestorm then phoenix. By this time Meteor Shower has likely ended so cast Meteor to knock the group down again. Now spam Flare and Phoenix on the remainder of the group. Usually takes about thirty seconds or more depending on the enemies level.

As a side note, my health is 537 and energy is 78, just to get a feel for my character specs.

Hello! Need to be a bit more specific. Just a bit. Are you a Necro/Warrior? Or a Warrior/Necro? And how far are you in the game?

There's a build in the middle of my first post about farming griffons / minotaurs, I suggest starting at 5-6 (two groups) at a time. Usually, you're level 20 when you get there.

But if you want to farm before you reach that, please leave how far you are in the game right now :)

Re: Farming. Tips/Lessons to farm.

yeah...forgot to tell my solo UW build...its preety much the same...(only works if you a 55 monk)

Attribute Points
Healing: 13
Smiting: 16
Protection: 8
Divine Favor: 6

Skill Setup
Mending (+4)
Balthazars Spirit
Healing Breeze
Protective Spirit
Balthazars Aura
Spell Breaker (elite)
Symbol of Wrath
Bonettis Defense

A quick tutorial on how to make it effective...(had to learn the hard way)...ok so you pay your 1k to get in...cast the nesseciary Mending and b.spirit...then protective spirit and aggro first group...the very second the nightmare pops out bring up spell breaker and kill it...after that its a matter of spamming protective spirit and healing breeze...the next part is VERY important...do not try to cast symbol or b. aura without using bonnetis defense first...they will interupt if you dont...hope this helps.

Can't believe I didn't post my solo one up, because that's how I started to learn how to farm in the first place by a friend I met along the way of playing.

Build: Warrior/Elementalist
Where: Outside Yak's bend torwards Ice Tooth Cave
Skills that I used: Sever Artery, Final Thrust, Healing Signet, Bonetti's defense, Phoenix, Fire Storm, Glyph Of Energy.

How do it: Start making your way torwards the area near the mines. (basically north). Cast glyph of energy and firestorm on casters first, hopefully if there is a ranger, its right next to it. Finish off all melee with your sever artery and final thrust. Your armor should be able to withstand the damage. (I prefer going knights or platemail for this.) While firestorm is whacking at any far range, target it again. If you have melee on you, cast phoenix.

I took this all the way to ice tooth cave actually, and got some rare/purple armor for runes. I sold those for a lot. But because of updates, I honestly don't know how much they are right now.

The reason why I used sever artery was so I can switch from target to target making them bleed each. Of course, deadly riposte might be a better idea. You can always switch glyph of energy for a stance, or something else.

Feel free to change around what youa re used to. If you want to use axe, I feel that would be even faster for more damage. Hammer is pretty good for knock downs as well.

Re: Farming. Tips/Lessons to farm.

Ive been trying to solo with a Death Necro/Fire Elm. and its really hard. For the first 10 minutes of so i cant take on anything but one enemy at a time or i get owned. Once i get the army of Fiends up though its not so hard. I normally do it in the dessart. Ive gotten some decient drops so far but nothing worth mentioning. Mainly you just take one enemy at a time and raise minions from the corpse. You keep the minions, fiends or whatever healed and just build up an army of them. Once you have 4 or 5 of them your good aslong as you dont aggro to many things or meet Hydras.

If you cast spells gliff of concentration i think its called and mist form have helped me allot when it comes to taking damage and being interupted. i like to keep a fairly high soul reaping. I tend to find places with walls or cliff faces allot of trouble finding thease in the desert so my usual plan of casting incendury bonds then tab life siphon throug htem adding the occasional rotting flesh. you can keep rotting flesh fairly low as you will be casting it little more often. and if you cycle thru all your foes fast enough and have say +3 on your life siphon (+2 will do its more about duration). by the time they wind there way past the wall or up the cliff fase you will have a regen of there number x 2 when damage gets a bit too much use mist form. if you have spare energy frozen burst while they are on you and with luck you can walk away and gives you a bit of time you degen them even more sometimes i have rather large quanities of monsters following me (verry slowly) while i tap there health and whak them once in a while. i must say its far from fool proof.

blood magic : 10
soul reaping : 9
fire : 9
water : 9
in the desert im a bit of a coward for solo farming picking off the strays, ive tryed a few tricks with death magic but im going to need health while im casting on thease guys so have stuck with: well of blood, life siphen, mist form, metior shower, frozen burst, incendury bonds, immolate, and rotting flesh i have a rune on my armor for the death magic. use those +15 wands combined with a good focus item and some energy armor. i would suggest practicing on early levals.
my experiences of trying to farm : should you feel like experimenting ive tried it with minions and blood of the master ive for some reason allways found it best to just farm as i play the game. even if i have done a mission i will do it again. if you try early part of thinder head keep(lots of walls and towers). one nice way to distance magic all those on top of walls and just consume corpse up to the top and zip round the corpses picking things up the bone minions tend to draw the enemys to the walls if you time it right. (that was with bone minions and horror) i took blood of the master, infuse condition (port sledge) and consume corpse which has got me into a fair bit of troble before now.

would like to try this mission with veretas aura and veretas gaze (both ember light camp)

i think my favorite place to farm solo (good place to get easy practice in) would have been back at flame temple corrador because there are soo many weak foes and you wont feel guilty about making wood from a char carving or an iron ingot from a 6-10 axe but not many people would agree with the profit margins of farming there past lvl 14 (if you want bone minions fairly early on in the game cap if on the reversing the skales quest). and soul feast or consume corpse will make up for low blood magic (providing you get a corpse or two (yea bring henches the two healers if you can keep them apart one dies, you use the corpse the other one resses and dies doing so sometimes). im yabbering again well allot of thease ways ive done it have involved a certain amount of luck skill or cunning but to this day i dont know which of the three (dont be afraid to die while farming outside a mission). i can think of lots of other things but i expect i would melt the computer. also anyone who wishes to correct my grammer and spelling please feel free to do so.

edit : dark bond how could i be so silly if you can rattle off enough bone minions have some fun with that its a blood skill so the trick with having two scar patterns one blood one death (superior blood say) use the blood scar cast your blood enchantment and swap it out for the death scar scar of blood magic +1 add a blood rune to it you get +4 and with minor on your death you health goes straight back up thanks to the uw spider thread for giving me the idea ;). and thanks to the monk who spoke of the +15 wand and swapping it out for a normal set of wand/staff once you have cast your high energy spells (lots of nice ideas ive seen on the forum thanks). swapping back to wand causes some problems sometimes but if you do it once ive found you can gain energy dont tell the bug fixers.

Riverside Province is a mission. I'm trying to install Guild Wars on my new laptop right now, so will find out for sure.

Anyone have any ideas for a mesmer/warrior farmer?

Re: Farming. Tips/Lessons to farm.

I play a R/N (no necro attributes or skills) lv. 20 and I am the shit at interrupting the sand drakes outside of elona. The only problem is, their basic damage prevents me from being able to go with a group of two (healer and myself), it is simpy not enough. If you have a good skill list for me or anything to use at all, plz reply. Also, I know that for Rangers, capping the Facet of Nature and getting Melandru's Resilience can make you millions off of huge groups of Mergoyles. It adds +2 health and +1 energy for every hex or condition

Im not much of an expert in terms of ranger but it might be an idea to take aura of the lich (a necro death elite).
it halfs your helth but halves any dmg done to you during that time. troll or any regen skills would effectivly mean that your doubling your healing power. even with a death magic of 5 your getting 35 seconds of use on it and it has a rechage time of 20.
here it is with death set to 5 and 12
