Most useful trade skill...

What have people found to be the most useful trade skill?

Is there a lack of people who have a particular skill?

Does any one skill generate more money right off the bat than any other?

Re: Most useful trade skill...

I’m sure some gathering skills will make some money. Or blacksmithing. The most useful skill are the ones that you use most though. for a mage your going to want to get tailoring so you can make some uber robes or blacksmithing for the warrior type. it depends. the most useless will probably be fishing, cooking (maybe), herb, gathering, and alchemy...but I’m just guessing on that.

Re: Most useful trade skill...

All trade skills have there own ups and downs, some are more useful than others, but to my knowledge there are none that are completely useless.

However I haven't gotten to try out every trade skill yet, but i'm working on it. Soon as I test out a few more ill post some of the pros and cons of each one.

Re: Most useful trade skill...

The answer to this question really depends on your class. A lot of the tradskills definitely suppliment your character class, which is very nice. Popular tradeskills include alchemy, engineering, and blacksmithing.

Muah ha ha aha a, you can always submit guides, screenshots, wallpapers, etc and you'll get more credibility. It's a bit faster that way :)

Re: Most useful trade skill...

Most tradeskills are very useful to "SOME" of the players.

1. If you are a solo player get what you need the most.
2. If you have a clan, guild etc.. try to balance out what is needed in it.

I have played most of the trade skills to the mid range (150-225 skill). Unless balance changes, I would recommend normal players choose 3-4 MAX tradeskills. Otherwise they will not be able to keep up with the skill pts required to keep their skills up. (4 would be pushing it). To do any more will probably require grinding skill pts. (I have one character who has 8 tradeskills, and am finding myself grinding skill pts at the level 50 cap to kill time till patch)

Re: Most useful trade skill...

for a mage or warlock i would suggest tailoring and maybe skinning. I havent taken tailoring but i think it requires leather. anyway, thats for a mage

for a warrior, or heavy attacker i would suggest mining and blacksmith.

for a heavy defense and backup person i would say herbalism and alchemy for healing, and pumping up allies.

these are the ones i have used(- tailoring) and it has worked awesome.

*my 2 cents*

Re: Most useful trade skill...

How can you have 8 tradeskills, Trex?
All I know of is that you can have 2 primary and 3 secondary tradeskills active at one time, and I thought you lost some or all of your skill level if you switched/unlearned your past tradeskill to pickup another?

*confused*

Re: Most useful trade skill...

Trex wrote that post back in beta when you had skill points with which to buy skills. You could have multiple skills back then. Now, as you said, you're limited to two professions, plus your "freebies," (fishing, cooking, first aide)

First aide is a must for any non-selfhealing character. I found that FA was essential for my warrior. Cuts way down on down time. My hunter in beta had alchemy and herbalism. Being self sufficient with healing potions was very convenient. My current hunter uses a gun, so he's got mining and engineering to be able to make his own shot and scopes. I do miss alchemy, though, because of the easy emergency heals. Selling potions in the AH was nice, too.

Fishing, I think, is essential for hunters, in order to cheaply (read FREE) feed those hungry, hungry pets.

Re: Most useful trade skill...

I've found that FA is essential and great even for a class that can heal, cuts down downtime/eating quite a bit, especially if you're hunting mobs that drop cloths for bandages. Next patch though, it seems like there is "channeling" time coming to self-bandaging too... so the usefulness might go down a bit.

Re: Most useful trade skill...

Skinning I would say is the most usefull as you can find something to skin anywhere really. You can make lots of gold from it when you get to being able to obtain medium leather and I manage to sell about an hours worth of huntings skins for about 35s for 10 and I get about 80 skins easily. Its also useful for allot of the manufacturing skills not just leatherworking.

Re: Most useful trade skill...

Tailoring is the cash cow. The bags make it worth it. 16 slot bags can sell as high as 150g. Enchanting is a nice combo with it since Enchanting is a money sink because most Guilds have their own enchanters who do it for free.

Re: Most useful trade skill...

It really does depend on your class. Think about what kind of armors your class can wear. And really what you like. I find it more enjoying to do certain tradeskills then others.

Here is a little short guide first have skinning and mining or herbilisam, after a while drop one and pick up tailoring once you can make heavy woolen gloves drop the last gathering skill then pick up enchanting then disenchantg gloves and raise lvl then enchant stuff for people making money from bags and enchanting

Re: Most useful trade skill...

Personally, my main...LvL 41 Human Warrior/ Llane server, is confused. He has change professions so many times but now he will stick with Mining and Blacksmithing. Just so he can make money and help Noobs out buy making stuff for them. My ALT LvL 16 Priest, is Herbalism and Tailor. I can make stuff for me and people lower level than me so it is a money maker too. Was doing Skinning but takes up too much space in bags.

Re: Most useful trade skill...

either gatherer or gatherer/crafter adn have 1 or 2 alts to support your crafter class(I myself have 1 leatherworker and 3 skinners(2 alts) to support the leatherworker)

as for making money, I found that in general recipes you cant learn from skill trainer sell fairly well in AH, some more then others(and there are off course exceptions. skill trainer recipes that sell very good, or scroll-recipes not selling at all)

edit: it helps a lot if you creat an auction house char. Just create a char, bring him to auctionhouse and park him tehre, then mail him all teh items you want to sell on AH, saves you time from goiung there everytime you want to sell/buy stuf at AH ;)

Re: Most useful trade skill...

On my Shaman, I took alchemy, merely because I thought it fit the class (crazy voodoo potion maker kinda thing) :P

But, potions are indispensable. You can't use bandages in battle to easily, and potions are instant health/mana/buffs. I kinda wish my rogue went with alchemy because I could really use the health potions when things go south during a fight.

Not to mention, if you're seeing not many people going with alchemy (which most don't) - that's a good thing - it makes you more in-demand. :) And it's always good to suppliment a guild with what they lack. If I were you, I'd stick with it, (but only if it interests you!)

RE: Most useful trade skill...

I have a level 30 hunter with Alchemy and Herbalism. He looks hard for his herbs, makes all sorts of potions, but can hardly give the stuff away on AH. There may be money in the high-level potions, but not the Lesser Healing Potion, Healing Potion, various mana potions, etc. People just don't pay any decent money for the stuff.

So, unless you use a lot of potions yourself (and my hunter doesn't, since his pet does the tanking and takes the beating; hunter just buys razor arrows and the best bow he can afford), or unless you're with a guild that needs potions .. I cannot suggest Alchemy.

Oh .. the herbs you find: Some sell, some don't, some days better than others. But he's making lots more money from selling the loot from kills and quests than he ever does from herbs or potions.

Maybe it'll get better as he moves up to stronger potions and more exotic herbs. One would hope so, because he's certainly not rich right now.

RE: Most useful trade skill...

Herbalism and Alchemy will make you the most money, hands down. Superior Health pots and stacks of herbs sell for rediculous amounts in the AH. Enchanting can be valuable, but you will hardly find people willing to pay too much, and the mats are hard get sometimes. You'd mostly be doing it for guildies anyway. Leatherworking and Skinning CAN make you money, because some people like to be armor kits. Engineering, aside from scopes, is almost useless in terms of making money. Fun to toy with.

RE: Most useful trade skill...

for a hunter, usually the most useful tradeskills would be skinning and leatherworking. In the nightelf land to start, mining isn't easy as veins are hard to find, leatherworking so you can use what you make as armor and skinning to make free armor for yourself. This is about the same as blacksmith mining for a paladin or a warrior maybe.

It dosent matter what professon you choose BTW but if your in it for the long run and you want to make items foryour self i would say

Hunter:Mining/weponsmith(or LW and skining)
Warrior:Mining/Smith(Weapon and armor)
Rogue:Skinning and LW
Mage:Enchanting/tailoring(or possibly herb and alc)
Warlock: " " "
Priest: " " "
Pally: Same as warrior

---Those are the only ones i can think of right now but if you get your skills high in those you'll thank me b'cuz ull make lots of money and outfit yourselves awsomly and if your shorton cash just farm mats like linin or silk leather, or all types of bars and sell them on the auction house you cant go wrong when you work the AH ;D later

RE: Most useful trade skill...

if you want to make money this is what my friend did.

mining/enchanting.

the minging is self explanatory take node mine it smelt it sell it.

The enchanting is a bit diffrent. take all green items that ou dont use D/E them (dis-enchant) and sell the mats on the AH. It may not be good to start but once you are high enough to solo low level instances then you will make a ton of money. As of today my friend has over 700g at level 48.

how do i know this you ask?. he helped me buy my mount at 40 and gave me 100g as if it was nothing.

That May be true but its going to take a lot of work to do that you would have to farm a load of items for the enchanting and mining is well easy but still i would sugest just farming some things with good drop % for greens then just saving the items in your bank untill you havae around 100+ items (i know its stupid but itll help a lot) you'll get your ench up to around 100 plus you'll be able to sell all the mats on the aH so its pretty much worth the effort or, just dont pick up enchanting till around lvl 35 when you can solo DM's or i think its the Waling caverns for the hord. Well im just puting my 2 cents in ill wait till later to reply again
