My quick and short answer is:
6 people who stick to the plan!
We started out with:
3 warriors / 2 nukers / 2 monks / 1 necro / 1 ranger.
While holding the fort, about halfway through, the necro drops out. Soon after that, one of the monks drops out. As the pics depict, we finished as 2 warriors, 1 monk, 2 ele's, and 1 ranger.
The plan from the beginning was to hold the doors. 1 warrior, 1 ele, 1 monk per door with the rest in the middle supporting those having the tougher time. Also, we agreed NO LEAVING the fort.
In the end, the last Monk did a heck of a job manageing her energy (a topic I will cover in another post).
I remember the last grp of foes with the confessor. We had them down to 2 mantle knights and the confessor. 1 warrior per knight and we ele's kept nuking the confessor till the warriors died. No time to rez the warriors, the ele's kept pounding the leftover knights. I was one of those eles (gold armored gal in pics) and at the key monent with 50-60 life left, I was able to kill last knight. With monk healing me and both ele's just pounding the confessor, the monk had enough time to rez one warrior. And we just wailed away.
Make a plan/strategy - stick to it! If you waiver, you lose miserably. At the very least-you stick to the plan and have a fighting chance to beat the mission as **ONE-Minded** group.

This was so gratifying a win that I thought I should share. It only took the core group (of 6) about 3 tries. we kept getting quitters or worse-retarded warriors.
just wanted to share.

i agree with you, but i have a question if anyone could help me.
The first time i've beat it we we're 8 : 2 nukes, 2 monks, 2 rangers, 2 warriors. The plan was to have warriors on each doors and we just ran from one side to another. I thought it was the easiest mission but yet the longest one to do. We never got attack inside the base!
I have been trying to beat this mission for the second time (been trying for a while), i have told my strategy to other groups and noone believed me so every group decided to stay by the king and let the base be attack on both side. Since we have to agree to one strategy only, i always just follow the order.
My question is : can it be actually beaten with both strategy or did i just had alot of luck the first time?

When i did thunderhead with my group its was one of the easiest missions I had done. From stuff I had read I figured it would be a very hard mission. I dont remember what we had in our group but we just stayed in the throne room for the most part. At the beginning 2 people were off to the sides manning the catapults or whatever they are while the rest of us waited by the king. Then as enemies came we would as a group attack each side. Then when the Confessor arrived we picked off teh targets on by one everyone attacking tgethera nd it was just as easy as the rest of the mission.

We did so as well my 1st and 2nd time on this mission. We decided to stay by the king and have them come to us.
When I played as my monk, I just cast mending on him (+4) and just kept everyone else sufficiently healed.
But I agree, you can do this mission with either strategy. The key is everyone should stick with the plan. Any deviation is costly.
The one beauty of having to stay by the king is the 'bottleneck by the top of the stairs. the nukes had a field day with the 'clustered' baddies. Plus, the monks can stay by the king and remain in casting range of their allies.
This one though was unique for me as we did it on sheer will and luck, since we were 2 short which is a handicap we though we could not compensate for.
The dumb thing for me was, I forgot to take screenshots until the "movie". Would have been nice to see what my Hp level was. I remember saying to myself that it was a very close call.

Thunderhead Keep really isn't that hard of a mission, it just requires everyone to work together. There are several strategies to beat the mission; there is the Stay with the King, Hold the Gates, Hold the Courtyard(I personally do not recomended this one). Of course there are many stategies within each one, such as trapping or an undead army, or running between the gates.
But it all boils down to good teamwork(sometimes hard to come by) and of course sticking to the plan, whatever it may be.

My team for Thunderhead keep. Well, two. One was for helping a friend.
First time: Me + henchies.
Second time:
Warrior, Ranger, Monk, 2 ele's, Mesmer, Necro.
Forgot who dropped out.
But all you really need is patience. You need to know when to go, or not to go. Luring, timing, etc. Placement is very important as well.

well i did this whit 3 of my chars, i must say all change for everyone of them; with necro it's enough get henches(and at last a monk too) and start and do a lv.18 minions army and u'll own easily the mission stayng near the king.
Whit the monk it's a little hardr couse u need a complete 8 ppl party, we were 3 monks(1 prot and 2 healers)and a party of echo nukers and raangers(only one warrior), i don't remember how many echo and how many rangers... we stayed neaar the king and owned this mission easily :while the warrior tanked on the steps the nukers and rangers killed everyone^^..
Whit the warrior i used more or less the same kind of party and it's not too hard...only problem is to find the 3 monks if u haven't monks in your guild , the usual problem^^(at last 2 monks(healers) should be enough too, a nuker in more is not bad...)

Thunderhead Keep, my all time favourite mission.
It has been said here and I will say it again: All you need to complete this mission is a well formed and thought out plan.
I have done it many times with my guild helping people. Each time I have insisted that we either make a plan now or join another group (being a monk I am abusing people's "need" for a healer) and each time the group has stuck to the plan we have succeeded. Both with "hold the doors" and "defend the king".
Congratulations for overcoming your handicaps.
Edgwalkers is coming.

I would like to propose a new title for individuals that cannot/will not follow directions in this mission. The term noob is beginning to bore me. It is used in almost all games that I can think of. I see no harm in continuing the use of it throughout the rest of the game; however, due to the amount of discussion this one mission generates, I believe a new title should be bestowed upon those that act childish and totally ruin the chance of finishing it for the rest of the team.
The new title:
Dunderhead Creep
Noob is just too forgiving in the given circumstances. :-P

I love it!
Here's to those dunderhead creeps, may they keep trying to no end while we progress, beat the game, stand on the top of the hill, and say: "We made it".
+5 for you on that phoenix.

2 nights ago me and the wife were helping a friend of ours get thru thunderhead. We get the group together and ask the 1 question that matters most,"Does everyone know how to listen and follow orders" Of cause everyone says yes, so off we go.. Not 5 seconds into the game Our tanking ranger and tanking messmer head off to the top of the first hill aggro everything and die very painfully.. This was going to be a VERY long mission.... After making it thru to the end, 5 of the 8 players stuck to the plan of staying by the king... 3 ran off to do there own heroic deeds which feel very short of that. So 2 left leaving the 6 of us .. Then the last guy the ranger says this is taking to long and quits out, as the Last guy comes running into the base. hahah He wins Our groups Dunderhead Creep status :D
