Female toons aren't always female players...

Just a little venting if I may...

I play toons in either gender...but I've noticed an alarming trend of late that if I play a female toon, people will randomly go: "A/s/L" or even worse...

I had someone ask me what I was wearing??

I had someone say I was "So smart" to choose a name like "Neuronia" because it was mind related, then ask me my age and location...

I've had others hit me up for pictures. :P

The sad part about this is that my girlfriend Rachel LIKES this game...she loves the costume choices, that you can build female characters with realistic proportions, or go WAY over the top LOL...and she likes some of my toons but has an account and has her own as well.

And she gets REALLY upset with some of the people on there.

Yeah, we DO use the ignore feature, a lot...but is there a way outside of that to let people know their behaviour is not welcome, or even to let a mod know about it?

It's kinda sad when you're getting harassed in a video game...it certainly gives one pause.

Thank you for listening.

personally I only play female characters, I mean If I am going to stare at any one thing for long periods of time might as well be female. On top of that in GW I wear pink armor because it is funny. haven't had any problems with harassment so far, so sorry for the bad luck you have had, or am I just really lucky?

Re: Female toons aren't always female players...

I actually got into a rather large arguement with someone a week or so ago with Ms Conception. I was in Atlas Park and someone gave me the "A/S/L" line. So my response was "I'm sorry, that's really inappropriate for a game designed for kids to play." He then started talking crap about me on BROADCAST. So...being the type of person I am...I explained to him where he should go, how he should get there and exactly how far my foot was going to be up his @$$ if he kept up his crap.

Re: Female toons aren't always female players...

We had a similiar thread a couple of months ago, and then I was a bit surprised how many players had this problem. I was a bit new then, so I thought I must have been lucky. Now I am almost playing a year, but still nobody has ever bugged me. Now I am almost feeling unlucky. Is it the time of day, or playing style, or location, or what? Not that I want to be bugged, I am just wondering ...

(and what is "A/S/L"?)

i used to have this problem when i was playing Liz in the beginning... people would constantly as me if i was a "real girl" (grrrrrr) then i would get the a/s/l (why would it even matter!)... all of my toons are female (the costumes are just to cool to not pick a female) but w/ my main being in the higher levels i don't get it nearly as much as i used to... i don't know why people are like this honestly, i can't imagaine someone trying to start something w/ me via an online game, but there are some people out there that are strange..... that is the only reason they act like they do

Re: Female toons aren't always female players...

You know...this is really a funny topic. I had always assumed (yes...ass-u-me-..d) that all players of this game were males when I initially started (as i really didn't know personally, females that enjoyed this type of game). Then over time, listening to the broadcasts and even team chatter on the teams i'd pick up here and there, made me seriously confused. Well, up to the point where I had mustered up the courage to ask one of my teammates what their gender was, and was shocked when the reply was female. And I found that more and more females played this game.

Now, the only reason I would ask anyone for their gender, it's strictly not make any comment that could be taken as offensive (although it still happens....lol).

Yes, I've been on teams where some males are hounding after the female toons (because they ASSume their gender is female) only to be rudely awaken to the fact they are totally hitting on grown men.

My personal take on this is...if you are looking for some comapanionship and can not get it in RL...they do have other online services that are catered to that specifically and all the participants are willing parties.

Re: Female toons aren't always female players...

What!! You mean that scantily-clad, well-endowed female hero might actually be a guy!! But it MUST be a girl...and she MUST look like that in real life, right?...and of course she would want to meet me in real life because, after all, look at my hero!...I look like that in real life, too.

I don't usually run into this because I uaually make male heroes. I have been on a team or 2 where the gender discussion has been raised, but always just out of curiosity. The only places I usually see people treating this game like some kind of hormone-charged teen chat site is in Broadcast in Atlas Park. Because of that and the other mindless crap that gets broadcasted there I usually avoid the place.

And thanks, Phedre, for asking what a/s/l meant. I didn't know either. :)

Maybe I just make ugly female toons cause I have never been hit on. Or maybe my malness just shows through to well.

Re: Female toons aren't always female players...

I have only play male characters thus far, but I have run into this while teaming. We were in a mission and the male "heroes" were making comments about the female hero. I let them know that this was not needed. They continued, so I politely excused myself because of the content and left the team. They were not happy that the empathy defender left in the middle of the mission. I can only hope they died a couple of times so the lesson might hit home.

I want to enjoy playing the game, not listen to a bunch of immature boys trying to pick up a date (which is often a guy) for the dance party.

I would like to apologize to all the women right now for us men being idiots. Hopefully they will grow up and learn to act like the heroes they are supposed to be.

If I were you, to any that are asking (except Electro), I would just respond by telling them you are a guy. That should cause them to leave you alone.

Re: Female toons aren't always female players...

What I've found ammusing is that when I roll up a hot female toon, I'll have people give me influence for nothing. Just being hot. None of my male characters ever get that.

Since day one I've made the assumption...... they're ALL guys until I hear different. I've always had the opinion that this is a game, not a frikin dating service. If you meet someone that you play with long term and get to be friends and something comes of that, then fine. But asking ASL to total strangers is creepy.

I have found a way to figure out some of the female toons being played by men. Women will rarely make their toons look slutty, scantily clad yes, but not slutty.

I too like to make female toons because they are just fun to watch. Who doesn't like to watch a really hot super hero kick but. Rouge, Storm, Jean Grey, etc........ as much as like liked the story lines, I realy liked the "artwork". Why else would I have bought the X-Men swimsuit edition! >^__^< WOOT!

I do like to torture these players that mistake the game for a dating service. If they start asking stupid questions like ASL, I'll play along. I actually had one guy ask if we could meet after one pick up team. I would have paid big bucks for the screen shot of his face when I said, "By the way, I'm a guy, and I'd still like to meet." No offense to our players that prefer same sex partners, but this guy was obviously hetero. I'll bet he felt like going into the bathroom, carving open his scull and scrubbing his brain with heavy detergent!

Maybe I should make a character named Pinnochio and people will ask me if I'm a real boy. :)

One of my best friends met his (now) wife via an online game. But it wasn't like he (or she) went there with any intention of dating. They had both been playing a MUD for YEARS before they even met in person. She was living in California and he in Rhode Island.

They had gotten to know each other pretty well online over that time, I had gotten to know her, as well as others, quite well too. So she decided she was going to come out and visit us in RI (He and I lived together as housemates with a couple others). She came out for 2 weeks. They got to know each other quite a bit better. Eventually she moved out to RI with us.

They married and moved to Boston a few years back, and then out to Arizona last year.

I'm sure I was going somewhere with this story...I dunno though, it's cute though.

Re: Female toons aren't always female players...

I've had two experiences with this (surprisingly not more).

The first was not long after I started playing the game, with my Emp, Lady Elixir. Someone sent me a tell which read: "are you lez?". I gave a polite "no".

The second was when I created Hot Butter (I need to get some more screencaps ;) ). I got a "wow, you're hot", and replied "I like to make my female toons ones that I enjoy looking at". Got a "LOL", and that was that. :)

Re: Female toons aren't always female players...

Now that we have heard one perspective, let's get another perspective...because I've heard my share of Cat calls when I play with my emp Boy Toy. I can tell at that point who's really a female and who's not. I've even been given influence (shamely admits to taking it....NOT) just because of my name and the questions that i've been asked due to this....whew, i dare not post here for fear of being offensive.

Heck, I was on this team once and a couple of guys started hitting on me (guy toons, played by guys). They were very disappointed when I politely told them that was not my preference.

Oh...the point to this was, men/boys are not the only ones that hound the opposite sex in this game.

After reading this thread I think I want to make a token male toon.

But what does "A/S/L" mean?

I only play one female toon and this has happened only once. I replied that I was in Denver and to let me know when he had purchased his plane ticket since he was obviously such a big spender. This was followed immediately by the "Muah ha ha ha ha " emote. He didn't tell me again... I wonder why?

My main, Valentine Frost, I created only because i liked the name and it fit with my powerset(Ice/Emp). I only had the problem once, and all i did was tell him to F*** OFF. The only place i ever had trouble with this was when i was in AP. I'm pretty sure if you report them for harassment they will get a warning the first time and be /Kickbanned after that^_^ That is the only reason they aren't everywhere else. THANK YOU DEVS!

Oh yeah, one more thing. I did ask a few people if they were actualy female but it was only uotta curiosity. I did get "You dont need to know" once and just dropped it. No need to hound people. And it was AFTER i had teamed with them on several occasions.

Re: Female toons aren't always female players...

Guys (guys with manners) act different around girls. Don't talk about certain things and don't use certain words or terms. That's usually why I want to know. Don't want to offend a friend and or fellow hero.

It does surprise me sometimes how many are girls. I don't know a single one in RL that likes this sort of game.

Re: Female toons aren't always female players...

I enjoy making female toons, they have better costume choices for the most part then their male counterparts and they just are more fun to play in my opinion, though I create equal male and female, based on the background of the character. I never even consider whether a toon is controlled by a male or female...cause it just don't matter.

And when someone asks my female toon the A/S/L question...I answer with "Why does it matter, I'm here to play my fantasy in the game, not yours." then turn and run off to fight crime.

Moray has been propositioned, though not lately (after she hit 30, it's all downhill). Nightclubber has received polite compliments; maybe it's because of her club. Overall, it's a friendlier environment than online shooters, where everything is, as the kids say, "gay."

I try to build a 50/50 mix of male/female toons, though I tend to play the females more. Probably because I find them funnier. I mean, Arrowess = heiress -- the joke doesn't work with a dude. Likewise, Visible Woman or Auntie Freeze.

The only thing that concerns me about the player behind the keyboard is: are they any good at the game? By default, I assume that their toons are not reflections of themselves IRL. That's the case for me: I'm not female, black, blue, insectoid, irradiated, nor Indian.

That said, I do have a toon on Infinity that is a self-portrait, though I don't play it very often. Anyone else have toons based on yourself, or anyone you know?

(My first toon was based on my dog, BTW. Yes, female.)
