Good reading

So does anyone here have the time for reading any more? if so what kind of books do you read?

Re: Good reading

When I get the time to read, I go for the SciFi or fantasy series for the heavy reading and trivia for light reading.

Current series I'm into is called "Area 51" by Robert Doherty. Basically the story line is, Atlantis was a military outpost for a group of Aliens and humans were "seeded" thousands of years earlier to be slaves for them, and on countless other worlds as well. A two person group of rebels from another planet that lost their world to a war between the factions of the Alien race has come to earth to start a revolution to free the humans and stop the Alien race. Mars is a communications outpost that has the other faction of Aliens that are fighting. It sounds complicated but it's a really cool story. I really can't say anything else about it without giving away major surprises in the storyline. It is a good read if you're into SciFi.

For trivia buffs the best series out is called, "Uncle John's Bathroom Reader", there's about 10 books in the series so far and it is filled with interesting and outrageous trivia. It's a really popular series and Jeopardy! even had a catagory on it a few months ago. I could have so ruled that catagory! LOL

Also waiting for the paperback of the new Xanth novel to hit the shelves, I read them so fast I can't justify spending 25.00 on a hard back I will be finished with in 2 day of reading...except the Harry Potter series, which I love, and yes, I love the movies as well.

Steve

Re: Good reading

Oh yes the Harry Potter series is great... i can't get enough of them. I also like the movies, but had some beefs w/ the last one to come out.. the just left SO much out that was in the books... things i felt were really necessary for the plot line. but i'm no director so i guess i can't judge too much.

I don't really read to much sci-fi, i'm more of a fantasy girl... unless it is Michael Crition, he is my all time fav arthor... oh and Orson Scott Card, he writes some of the best sci-fi i've ever read.

Re: Good reading

Heh, I wasn't going to post to this thread, because I have been horrible about my reading choices as of late (a lot of romance novels on the floor next to my side of the bed). However, the Harry Potter series is very big with us. When the new books come out, we read them out loud.

In addition to the novels, I'm a Harry Potter fan fiction addict. I cannot get enough of the adventures of the characters and probably spend an average of an hour a day reading fan fics. If anyone is interested in sites, pm me and I'll send them to you.

Re: Good reading

I have been struggling through a fairly mundane Stephen King book I picked up while traveling and though would pass the time with its short stories (Everythings Eventual), but I am finding most stories to be eventually boring.

But once I finish that I am going to read Song of Susannah (Dark Tower VI) and will have to find something else after that one.

Re: Good reading

Reading? Other than magazines? Well... Caer and I have been trading the Dark Tower series back and forth, right now he's ahead of me, though. I do admit I have an addiction to mystery/suspense/horror novels, as a kid I read all of the Agatha Christie, Martha Grimes, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, and Ian Fleming, more recently I like Sue Grafton, James Patterson, Umberto Eco, all of the Potter books and others that my caffeine-starved brain can't think of right now...

I've also read all of the Dune Series, Asimov books, Ray Bradbury, and Douglas Adam's books.

I also admit I've read Bridget Jones' Diary (chick lit) as well as High Fidelity (guy lit), and the Sex in the City book (smut lit).

Happy page-turning,
GrrrlX

Re: Good reading

i love Douglas Adams, i've read all of his books that i could find.

I also have a weakness for a good romance novel, but don't indulge too often (my to read list is too long for that)...

Currently i am reading the Wheel of Time series (on book 2) by Robert Jordan, but CoH has drastically cut into my reading time... i don't think i will ever get thru the series.

I read mostly fantasy book myself i am a david eddings / raymond e feist fan and read most of their books and i currently doing the robert jordan Wheel of Time series, although lately i think robert jordan must be getting slightly lazy, with the last book being so boring and not much been going on.

On the Sci-fi i read isaac 'the granddfather of robots' asinov books and douglas adam HHGTTG series.

I am a RPG freak and usually spend my non-computer and non kid time reading Angel RPG supplements to plan what to do to my player. My favorite book is Job: A Comedy of Justice by Robert Heinlein. I wouldn't reccomend it if you aren't open minded or are particularly on the right wing side of Christianity. Outside that book, I like the Dragon Knight series by Gordon R. Dickson, about a History Teacher transported to medieval times in the body of a Dragon.

Re: Good reading

Ugh! I am so sad that I read my husband your article on being a girl and playing CoH. Ever since he heard the name of your oldest, he has renewed his kick of naming our future children after DL characters. I mean, we have a cat named Kender. What more do we need? (BTW, do not name a cat Kender. It is very bad luck. They already share enough characteristics. No sense in encouraging more.)

I have this list of safe DL names stashed away, in case it comes down to it. We are not naming our first child Tasslehoff!

Yes, tyhe Dragon Knight series is a little older. It may also sound familiar because of a non-related Anime film of the same name.

LOL, I wanted to name the baby Dalamar, but my husband put his foot down! But he wants another baby so I told him the only way I would have another baby is if I get to name it if it's a boy, right now thats all the birth controll we need!!!

PS Raistlin shares Charactistics with both Raistlin and Caramon which I find funny.

Re: Good reading

ok apart from my gulity pleasure of reading historical (medival) romance novels... (please don't tell anyone) I too am adicted to the Harry Potter series... I blame it on my sister and mother, Sis read them firts, guilted mom into reading them... I refused cause I thought they were kids books... boy was I wrong... I ended up buying the latest book befoore I'd even finished a chapter in the first one... got the rest for christmas, now I'm trying to get my bf to read them.... hum...I wonder if she planned them like this... kinda like Lay's potato chips... you can't get just one. ;)

My other guilty pleasure is a relativly new Fantasy writer... this is her first series... all 3 in the trilogy have come out within 1 year... her name is Trudi Canavan... The Black magician is the series... it's a ust read... they're like popcorn... I read the first book in 2 days and the 2nd in 1... the 3rd comes out in September and I fully expect to waste an entire day daying "Let me just finish this chapter and I'll come make breakfast." which of course will continue until by bf drags the book out of my hand at 2 in the am so he can get some sleep.

Re: Good reading

Hmmm.... reading? Yeah, love to do it. Among my favorite series are: "The Wheel of Time", "Mossflower", "Forgotten Realms", "Dragon Lance", "Tiger & Del", and so many more in various Genres. But I have to say that lately I've done more writing than reading. In fact I keep a running account of my main character's life in CoH on a blog who's link is listed in my profile. (End shameless plug) But seriously though, I love to write as much as I love to read. It's the kind of thing where if I thought I was good enough at it I might try to make a living doing it.

the thing i enjoyed about the devinci code was all the stuff about catholisim and the secret originazations.... i know a lot of it was fiction, but i did some research after reading it (i did a lot of research after) and found a lot in the book to be true. I'm a big religious buff (not religious, just like learning about them) and i know that the catholic church has suppressed a TON of info from the general public. it was one of those books that made me really THINK. there aren't too many of those out there (that i've found that is) my mom turned me on to them but my sister has also read it and she went crazy w/ research after reading it also.... anyone else read it? and if so anyone else do a bit o' looking around afterwards to find out more info on it?

Re: Good reading

I haven't read The Da Vinci Code yet, although I want to... people either love it or think it's full of sensationalist b.s. (and I can't remember where I read the b.s. part, but I think it was a somewhat religious site).

If you like the Da Vinci Code, I read a book literally 10 years ago called Foucault's Pendulum. I adore that book, and it's one of my all-time faves. It's got the vast world-wide conspiracy, many layers of plot and complexity, and lots of very big words and big philosophy. I'd recommend it to anyone, just be aware that it may take you a while to get into it.

Cheers!

(p.s. another of my all-time faves is Perfume, by Patrick Suskind - check it out)

Re: Good reading

I had picked up a book before having surgery because it felt like a comfortable book to read. (Really, the cover and pages are very soft. It's hard to explain, but it is comfortable to hold.) It is The Charmed Sphere by Catherine Asaro from Luna Books.

It was the perfect book for being laid up for a while. I was light reading. It didn't require me to keep track of huge political plots but it did entertain me with a new magic system based on shapes.
