Help on Secondary profession with ranger!

I'm starting a new character and its primary is a ranger, but i can't decide on if i should make it a r/mo or a r/n please help. Also if you think you might know a better secondary proffession please tell me.

First of all, remember that there is no better proffession. Each build has it's own pro's and con's. It's about preference. Whether if you like to be support, damage dealing, scouting, even a tank.

That said, it'd help out if you told us what you are looking to do. :)

Id suggest ranger/mesmer. But if you are certain youd like to use necro or monk. Id say necro. The only real damage you can get from monk is smiting where most of the attacks are up close. In turn necro you could use blood magic which heals and deals ranged damage. But again i suggest mesmer.

Who says you had to heal yourself? :)

Sometimes, going a pure Ranger can take on two warriors. If you know which skills to go. A ranger is a perfect build in itself, if you know what to do. ie. Whirling defense, throw dirt, traps. Also, have you ever considered doing a ranger/warrior for some other stances as well?

Oh, by the way, are you planning on mostly going PvE, or PvP?

The only secondary job I can see being able 2 heal and do dmg is necro which if u can enuf points into blood it will keep your life up so any monks dont hav 2 waste time healing u every second, where mes would do better dmg it cant heal u at all.

If you plan on going PvP, I suggest going mesmer or warrior as your second profession. You can shut down casters, warriors, do interrupts, fast spike damage, etc. While slowing down warriors, you can blind them, poison them, make sure they don't get adrenaline, and what not.

i made my ranger ranger/warrior and it is pretty good in PvE and PvP. its deleted now, but im gonna make it again just because it was so fun to play. i used wilderness survival, marks, tactics, and the extra in expertise. i also brought an axe and axe spin so when i got surrounded by warriors, i used axe spin and poisoned all of them as i almost always keep my arrows poisoned. one of the major drawbacks of rangers i think is that they attack so SLOW. so i used warrior attack-speed-boosting skills like frenzy, flurry, and never tried berserker stance. they help a ton. so i would personally reccomend r/w, but thats my opinion.

Yep, Ether Feast with enought points into its attribute can can heal you over 70 hp. Then there is the enchantment Illusion of Weakness but that requires an initial drop in health.
If you are looking for a huge increase in health, put a large amount of points into Beast Mastery and use Symbiosis.
Symbiosis gives you quite a bit of extra health for each enchant on you.
Speaking of that, I used Fertile Season + Symbiosis + 6 enchants and I put my rangers health up to 1,565 for about 10 seconds. Heck, I'll post a pic of my health bar if I ever figure out HOW to post pics.

For PvE I would go R/Me just because it allows you to take down most targets extremely fast, thus reducing the chance of having to fight too many enemies because some idiot in your group ran off during a fight in order to aggro MORE enemies.

Ok first id love to see that,it would be a thrill. Second in order to post it like on a thread. You would first Open pic in like paint or something. Save it as a jpeg. And then upload it to a site. There are a few. I use Photo Bucket Because ive never had a bandwidth exceeded problem here. There is also Image Shack Which i didnt like in the past.

I know there must be situations where Fertile Season serves a purpose, but so far I haven't found one as the Health and armor modifiers of fertile season works on all creatures, including your enemies. I'm not trying to dis you here, just honestly curious.

I figured it's only useful if you can somehow stand on the inside ot the spirit's 'border' with the enemy outside, but found that a practical impossibility. I can't believe there exists a totally useless skill in this game, so I must be missing something here :-)

The use of Fertile Season is to provide a temporary health and armor boost to your team or you. Say that your warrior is getting wailed on and is loosing health quickly but your monks protect or really good healing skills won't be availible for 5 more seconds. You cast it, your warrior gets a lot of health and +15 armor, thus giving your monk's skills time to recharge so they can heal/protect that warrior.

Ah ok, makes some sense. I use Healing Spring in those situations myself so I don't give the enemy a boost, but that has the drawback of a much shorter radius of effect.

The only thing I dont see covered yet is cripple skills :O

Pin Down, Crippling Anguish or Image Burden are nice and I like Pin Down if using say apply poison for a tripple bonus (hurt them, cripple, poison).

A cripple skill is a good thing to get those warriors out of the way for a time while those caster get taken out. Some, not many but some smart warrior/monks take purge condition to stop this happening.

Nice...50% armor penetration. You can get it to 60% if you use a horn bow(Horn, Shadow, Ivory, Storm), I believe those have base 10% armor penetration to make up for the horrible rate of fire. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

this is a hard choice. the ranger is so versitile that many times i never even used my 2nd class.

i've tried out every 2nd class with my ranger and still revert back to all ranger skills. i use my 2nd class in pvp to throw people off. some class combos are targeted more often then others. many times i go straight for the rangers over mes and monks.

No I'm pretty sure Horn Bows have base 10% armor penetration.

As for firing speed, a.k.a refire rate, that is determined by the type of bow. Shorts and Flats refire at a rate of about 2 seconds, Long and Composite at 2.5 seconds, and Horns at about 2.7 seconds. Flats have the highest arc and thus the longest travel time; Longs, Horns, and Shorts have a normal arc; Composites have the loweest firing arc and thus the shortest travel time for their range.

Refire rate is not directly related to firing arc and/or range. If refire rate was related to arc and range then why do longbows and shortbows have the same refire rate since they have different ranges, or even composite and long which have different arcs but about the same range.

If you plan on using a flatbow, bring something that flattens the arc like Read the Wind or Favorable Winds.

Also I retract my statement about 60% penetration, it appears only the highest base AP% is used, so a Horn's base 10% would be overriden by Penetrating Attack's 20%.
