Prima Binder Guide (REVIEW)

I just got a look at Prima's CoV Binder guide. Normally I would assume that it is useless to buy a guide for a MMORPG that gets updates often, however the idea of a binder guide with updates intrigued me, so I thought I would check it out.

I am sad to report that at this point the Prima CoV Binder guide is very disappointing to say the least, and it is missing major parts of the game such as:

- power pools
- story arcs
- badge locations
- damage/brawl index

The authors simply copied the description of the power sets from the game. The guide only gives a vague example of a standard build for each archetype. This guide is LESS complete than the little book that comes with the game.

There is a note in the guide that indicates that the badges are listed in the appendix, but there is no appendix included.

The authors had some good ideas - they are just implemented poorly or partially. For example - it has maps of all the zones, with descriptions of the various monsters and villains, but the guide contains no information for the previously existing CoH villains that show up in CoV. Absolutely nothing regarding Hellions or Skulls or Lost, etc.

A lot of foes are listed as having Resistance: Resistance, when they obviously meant resistance to some form of damage. Other enemies are listed as having resistance to energy or smashing/lethal, etc.. It also has a modifier chart showing the bonuses/penalties when fighting things higher or lower level, but the power descriptions don't have the durations listed.

Another example of the poor implementation is the fact that they have information on the subject of BASES and nothing practical or worthwhile about Supergroups!

On the plus side it does have some stuff that is cool/interesting like good screenshots and backstory and some numbers on powers (but once again, nothing on damage).

I don't mind paying for updates to the guide as new issues come out, but at this point the guide is INCOMPLETE, and I sure hope that they see the error of their ways and offer a free update for exisiting users to bring the guide up to the level that it was advertised to be.

I have seen rush jobs before, but this is ridiculous. They should have waitied until they actually had some worthwhile information to publish in the guide instead of slapping something together to rush out to be on the shelves at the same time as the CoV release. Prima guides are hit and miss- some are great and others are worthless- this title is obviously in the latter group. It may be that the guide finally ends up as being worthwhile, but it is far from that at this point.

Do yourself a favor and go out and buy a big binder and print out some info from this site, and elsewhere online, and THEN you will have a decent guide. Save your money for game time cards.

This is not intended as a flame, just a heads up, and IMO it is not anywhere near worth the $ at this point, and I cannot recommend it to anyone. Others may disagree, but that is my opinion.

Yeah great now you tell Me :-P

I must agree with the review overall. I got the guide mostly for base and base raid info, no room cost item cost, what a waste. And the little advice they had on building for defendse was (IMHO) wrong.

Re: Prima Binder Guide = WORTHLESS

I had the PRIMA guide for CoH, and it became obsolete with updates. Not only because of the content additions, but also because its main use was for finding contacts and such. When the Devs finally decided to start marking everything, I stopped opening the guide. Honestly, I agree that this site and the CoH site will provide far more information than a guide ever will.

Re: Prima Binder Guide = WORTHLESS

I was wondering on how good that guide was. Mostly because they stole my idea of a binder guide. Since early this summer, I started keeping a binder guide for my Heroes, mainly Vince Voltage, but also my alts. I typed up and printed out several lists, which include lists of all the badges divided by type, a leveling chart so I can plan out powers and keep track of my character's level, a TF list so I can see which ones I've done/need to do, info on the various zones including level ranges, security level requirements for hazard zones, and which villains are found where, etc. I've been keeping it all in a three-ring binder and I highlight badges off the list as I go along, write in the power chart, etc. Its actually pretty handy at times, particularly when my laptop is in the shop and I only have the one computer to play the game one (I use the laptop to supplement & check info on the site here and play music). Of course, my badge list is pre-I5, and since I'm at school, I don't have the time right now to update the lists. I'll get to it soon, and I'm sure that once I have the new lists printed out, they'll come out with a new update to screw me up again. Haha.

Re: Prima Binder Guide = WORTHLESS

I have to agree, I'm hoping it gets better with the additions they promise to publish with each update, I have to admit though, the new look for the manuel is awesome and beautifully done, artwise...but, the one thing that caught my eye was the ED description. It basically says it was put in to help people diversify their hero or villain, and Statesman explained numerous times that it was being put in so people wouldn't be a slave to a "standard" build, meaning the hasten and fitness pools. But, if you look at the example builds for the ATs in the CoV manuel, all have...

Hasten by level 8 and the complete Fitness pool by level 22, I thought the ED system was supposed to get rid of the need for these powers...Am I wrong or isn't that what the big sugar coated reasoning behind the drop across the board for all the powers was for?

The examples of the powerset builds are no different or diverse from the way we were building them before the induction of ED, the only thing that will be different is the max slotting of 3 of the same enhancements.

Now I'm not trying to troll this thread, heaven forbid, I'm just curious on why we were told one thing and then the manuel shows the same old builds using Hasten and the Fitness Pool that were supposed to be addressed and "fixed" with Issue 6.

I think that the answer regarding the info in the prima is simple: the guide is not complete, and was a rush job. I agree- it looks slick, and it has promise to turn into something better, but right now it just isn't what it promises to be.

As far as the ED is concerned, I don't think they ever said they were gettting rid of those powers, I feel that they were just trying to equalize each pool power's ability, so you weren't forced in to choosing certain types of pool powers no matter what AT you chose.
