Tournaments and Ladders Coming Soon!

Within the next few months we'll be adding the Tournament and Ladder modules to the GameAMP Network. This will allow teams and players to join a somewhat unconventional and innovative style of ladder, and also allow certain high-credibility users to start their own tournaments.

GameAMP will of course be holding our own tournament and giving away prizes to the participants. If you want to add in your comments or wishlists for what your tournaments and ladders should include, please feel free to reply with them.

What location will this/these ladders be in? I'm in Australia and I don't really feel like playing in a competition with a horrible ping.

We'll open up different divisions, if australia has a player base, then we can have an australia ladder. It simply depends on how many people are where.

We will not forget about the aussies though. =)

Re: Tournaments and Ladders Coming Soon!

It'd be nice to have ladders for different level of skill. So, you could have an "advanced" and "normal" ladders; that way a whole ladder isn't ruled by one or two clans. This has the added benefit that more clans are bound to join the ladder then.

It'd also be nice if the maps weren't limited to those that ship with the game. The community has created very good maps and a lot of arena maps are played. Your major obstacle will be publicizing these ladders, but it is a good bet to go with what the community plays.

Re: Tournaments and Ladders Coming Soon!

I wouldn’t worry about maps, nobody here is daft enough to push crud maps. Actually I think most of us are map nazi’s so the list will be lean mean and good.

As far as skill tiers go. I don’t forsee that being an issue. It’s been my experience that good teams tend to target other teams of their caliber. Beating up on noob teams tends not to raise position on the ladder nor does it help. So eh, don’t worry to much about it. The other thing I should say is taking a loss to a better team isn’t a bad thing, after all that’s how you get better, and that’s how you learn, the option should be there.

I'd like to see 1v1 as well. As far as maps go, I'd personally feel at ease if you used the maps that other major tournaments (WCG, GGL, ESWC etc.) use which are DM-Rankin, DM-1on1-Roughinery and DM-DE-Ironic. If you use community-made maps you're forcing the players to learn maps at an increadibly fast rate which is less likely to happen if you use the popular maps.

Or perhaps you can use a slightly bigger map list but have each player pick a map and have the tiebreaker map be one of the above mentioned three maps, which would work too.

1v1 is very much on the board of things to happen :)

Once we get the 2 tdm settings up and going (ie 4v4 and 2v2) expect 1v1 shortly.

Re: Tournaments and Ladders Coming Soon!

While the idea of separating skill levels is a great idea, it's not feasible for the UT2004 community. If you did that there'd be 1 or 2 clans in the upper tier and the rest would be in another. There aren't enough clans... the reason they can do this in CS is because there are fuckin thousands of active teams.

If you do a 1v1 ladder include the 3 main maps like xTc said, but I wouldn't mind if you added something like Achilles or that one concrete was working on.

It's not enough to succeed, others must fail.

Re: Tournaments and Ladders Coming Soon!

did xtc just post twice in a row with 4 months in between? :o

PS the problem with adding new maps to 1v1 is that usually what 1 person believes to be a perfectly fine 1v1 map, 90% of the rest of people will disagree...

achilles is ok 1v1 (i prefer 2v2 on it personally), and i'm still trying to perfect altena_LE...

i certainly don't think it'd hurt to throw in a new map or 2, given that it's actually good (and we'd have to tell people long enough ahead of time, so if it's not popular at the time people can practice)

course first thing's first, and that's TDM
