Riddles in the Dark

This thread is in honor of Bilbo Baggins. Those of you who've read The Hobbit will remember how Bilbo actuall acquired the One Ring.

While feeling his way around a little used and possibly forgotten pathway in the Goblin dungeons under the Misty Mountains, Mr. Baggins inadvertently finds the Ring, or the Ring found him as it were.
The Ring at one time belonged to that wretched creature, Gollum, who discovered Bilbo wandering alone in his neck of the catacombs. The Ring had grown restless and had deceived Gollum and misplaced itself for the purpose of being found and carried away. While Gollum was fully intent on throttling poor Mr. Bilbo, the clever Hobbit suggested that they play a high stakes round of the "Riddle Game".
Evidently this game was known and respected throughout middle earth, because even Gollum felt loathe to break his word should he fail to win the game... The prize was Bilbo's very life. Should Mr. Baggins lose, then Gollum surely would slay and eat him. However, if Bilbo won, then he had Gollum's word to let him go free.
In the end Bilbo won the contest and remained alive and unharmed by Gollum, although he could never imagine the events he had set into motion, all later culminating in the War of the Ring.

My idea for this thread is for those who feel so inclined to post riddles to see how quickly anyone can come up with the right answer. These riddles MUST make sense in the end and must not be adult in nature... let's try to keep these forums clean, shall we?
Whenever possible, try to create the riddle yourself. You may repeat one that you already know, but that makes it possible that everyone else knows the answer. In my years of PnP gaming, I have written a number of riddles to use in making the game more interesting. I will start with the first riddle in the post that follows =) Good luck!

my initial thought would be the wind, but that seems to simple

so other than that I've got nothing

also Apoletta, sand seems good til the fear line and the run away line

I guessed sand, because quick sand, sand storm and the sands of time.
But I chose poorly. :)

Sand is made up of particals of rock. So my second guess would have to be particals?
