HOW TO MAKE A COOL AVATAR GUIDE

Complete step by step for making a avatar

This guide will walk you thru the steps to make a custom avatar. My guide uses a program called Real-DRAW Pro. This can be downloaded for free and used for 30 days. The ability to “Draw” is not needed. I have many people say they can’t draw so they can’t do it. You won’t need to be an artist to get a good avatar, I promise.
Download and install Real-draw

Log in you charter you want to use in avatar. Go to a well-lighted place. I use the City building in Atlas. Inside there are well lighted hallways. Find a spot to stand against a wall with as plain a background as you can find. A solid wall works well. TIP If you take your picture outside check the sky. If it is full of dark clouds your picture will be dark to.By using your page up key and mouse zoom around to view your hero from the front. Start taking those screenshots. Get a lot of different angles. Some up close some father back.
Log out of COH and open the real draw program.Go to File Open . Browse to C:Program FilesCity of Heroesscreenshots. Click on the tab at the bottom that says file type and select .JPG. find the Picture you like the best. Then load it.
Example of my hero

STEP 1
Click on the bottom icon on the left tool bar button labeled Export Crop . Now draw a window around your hero.
STEP 1 screenshot

STEP 2
From the top pull down menu select Bitmap/ Create/ New Document snap shot.
STEP 2 starting new drawing

It will make a new image of just what was inside of the window.
STEP 2 New image

STEP 3
Here is the fun part! Na really it isn’t to bad just take your time. Click on you image to select it. Then click on the 2nd down icon on the left. “Paint on Object”. Wait ,you said I don’t need to draw! Relax you wont, were just going to do some erasing.
Click the Erase/ Transparent tool. Now select a size for your eraser. To little is better than too much. You can erase more but cant put it back later. I usually like the one that’s on the bottom right in the screen. It’s a big square. Use it and erase all the backgroup stuff around hero. Don’t try to get close to you hero just yet. TIP Leave extra around hero's edges. the Eraser is bigger than you think.
STEP 3 Select Eraser Tool

STEP 3 After erasing big area

STEP 4
Click the Paint on Object button again to change view to normal mode. VERY IMPORTANT Be sure to save now and make sure it is in the .rdw format.
If it isn’t and you want to make another icon or change yours you’ll be doing all the erasing again, umm not that I ever had that happen lol.
STEP 4Saving my progress

STEP 5
From here click on the paint draw Object to go back to edit mode. What I was just here? I know but I found out the hard way if you erase too much there isn’t a way to undo. So what we did was save our progress. Click at the top where it shows 100% and change it to 300%.Now use a smaller eraser tool and get all the background left. Get as close to the hero as possible. I like the small Dot tool.
STEP 5 Selecting smaller tool

finsh erasing all the background so all you have left is your hero.
STEP 5B Only Hero left

Click on the OBJECT SELECTOR in the upper left vertical toolbar to take image back to normal mode. Save you changes and right click on the image and select add to libary

STEP 6
In the top left toobar select NEW . Once it appears from the top pull down menu select Project/ size and color . For GAMEAMP people change the height to 200 and the width to 100.
STEP 6 New canvas 100x200

STEP 7
Here is the fun part to make it look cool. Click from the tool bar on the right the rectangle tool . And draw a rectangle the same size as your canvas. Mine just happened to be red but don’t worry about color were going to change that.
STEP 7 New Drawing with red rectangle

STEP 8
At the bottom of screen you will see two tabs. Library A and Library b . Click on one and browse thru till you find a texture you like. I picked the 6th one over on library b. My charter has a pea them going so I am a bit fond of green. This is a cool background it looks like radiation or some kind of chemistry formula but I want it green. Now to make it Green instead of that brownish color. Click on the object to make sure it is selected then go to the toolbar on the Right. Go to the 6th one down lights Material Select it and a popup window appears.
The point 1 and Point 2 are like flashlights. The point just shows the program where they are. Click on point 2 its set to that red color. Let make it yellow. Now use the slider above the color pallet to adjust how bright you want that flashlight. I made mine a bit brighter than it was. Click on point 1 and make it green, or your favorite color.
STEP 8 Pretty green background

STEP 9
Now that’s a cool background and the right color. Click on the objects tab at the bottom and find you hero picture we made before. Drag the picture from toolbar to the screen.I told you this guy was huge. Move your mouse to one of the corners until the edit arrows pop up. Then click down and drag the mouse to make a smaller box. Get it down to the size it will fit on the background we have. Tip if you have problems and cant get the image selected or the lines to move, click on the far left toolbox top box the arrow. This put the mouse into cursor mode again. I often find that I am trying to do something and somehow I am not in that mode.
STEP 9 Pulling hero up from libray

STEP 9 With small hero

STEP 10
Now click on the smaller guy and drag it onto of the background. If it disappears under the background just go to the toolbar on the bottom left find the icon that says bring to front. This makes you hero sit onto of the background.Looks good so far but I want the hero to stand out from the background. Click on the “shadow and effects”tab then start picking shadows till you find the look you like. I added a shadow to the upper left. To make the hero stand out.
STEP 10 Hero with Shadow effect

STEP 11
All we need now is to put the name on there so the world will know who we are. Click on the text box in the left vertical toolbar tray. A text window will appear. Pick the text style you like. Then type your heroes’ name. Bold looking charter tends to look better, but that’s your call.
STEP 11 Text editor box

Select ok. Mine appeared too big and was wrong color so lets fix that. From the vertical toolbar on the right go to the 8th down. To make the color space box appear. Click on the color you like. Tip the large circle gets you close to the color you want. Then click in the middle box to pick the exact color. Only clicking in middle box will change the color.
STEP 11 Text color

STEP 12
I picked a texture from the library you can do that to. Now I am going to use the same technique we used to shrink hero to make the text fit.
STEP 12 Texture to text effect

STEP 13
Almost done! I don’t like the flat straight text so click on the hero-name and then “shape tool” it’s the 3rd box down on the left vertical toolbar. I also zoomed in to 300% so you can see. Our text has little boxes in the corners and some in the middle. By moving the little corner boxes you can change the shape of your text. The boxes that are attacheted to little lines can make the text arc. What Ill do is move the far left and far right boxes down to just above the heroes shoulders.
STEP 13 Moving text corners

STEP 14
Then by moving the boxes in the middle up I make the text curve over his head. Zoom back to 100% save your creation. My text looks good, but my hero has overlap. The hero’s shoulders are bigger than the canvas. So I need to use the Export Crop tool to draw around the size of the block.Again go to Bitmap/ Create/ new object snap shot
STEP 14 Finshed Text

STEP 14 Edit crop window tool

Step 14 New avatar to size
Step 14 New avatar to size

STEP 15
This is your avatar. Not to bad. Just save this guy and change the file type to .JPG so that you can load it. Play around you can do many cool things. By changing the text propeties and changing the bevel of the background and adding some dazzles I was able to make it look a lot better. Just rember to use the .rdw file to do edits, rember me saying to be sure and use that format? Thats why.
MY Finshed Avatar!

Your done! BE SURE AND SAVE. save the finshed avatar in .jpg format as well as .rdw
