why does everybody got an ascalon helm for farming griffons? I mean, gladiator helm is WAY better no? I know... gladiator helm is awefully ugly but you can hide it now!
anyway... I just don't understand.

Well, I find both have their own good properties. With the gladiators, youcan die once and with your 15 dp still have enough energy to cast aura. However with the ascalon helm. You reduce damage from physical attacks. I use both. Depending on the occasion. My question is. Why knights gloves and boots...I have still not found a reason.

I dont think it matters, if i ever go out to do it, i just keep my platemail helm (has the axe mastery rune on it, duelist helm has the sword mastery rune) the rest of my armor remains the same, all glads

off topic but kinda on the same track-
i met a fellow farmer and he told me that he uses knights gloves with an absorbtion rune on it. says it helps a bunch with the damage. so why not glads? guess he likes less dmg more.

i use full plate mail from granite citadell and together with healing ankh from droknar's i have extra +12 energy and +45 hp(while enchanted),+5 armor
it does the job when i farm griffons, the only time i die is when i get few damn devourers attacking me while i'm beating the crap outta griffons and minotaurs(unless i manage to cast shield of judgment before they can interrupt it-but usualy hard with more than 2 of them)

um okay few facts wrong with answers from this post. Damage is seperated in differnt areas. For example the legging and the chest absorb MOST DMG, the helm comes with a low percentage, so basicly helm, or no helm theres no difference. Oh and for those wondering "reducing damge is -1 dmg JUST ON THAT BODY PART, so yes in deed, it does stack, just not on one body part

Aye but with 5 areas to take damage, and 15-20 girrfons attacking. The probability of taking a shot to the head is higher. Therefor it does in fact help out.

Actually. Hitting the chest has a higher one.
Okay, here is the main reason why people will use different sets of armor.
will edit in a bit(emergency)

i see that you use a healing ankh, did you get that crafted? and what are people's opinions on a healing ank instead of a shield, i think its a good idea and i might use it instead of glads armor. glads armor looks like crap anyways but what do people say about that? healing ank no shield :o what a fascinating idea

I agree. A shield has a max of 16ar. Full plate has an extra 25 ar to glads. So thats in fact +9ar over galds with a shield. Wow Very nice idea mate. I cant beleive I never thought of it. +Cred for sharing.

i use 15k platemail, except for helm i use ascalon. for energy is also use the droknar crafted healing ankh.
ascalon helm is just good because
1. id adds tactic, and 15k platemail helm doesn't
2. i think it looks nice :P
3 it absorbs.

Sorry, something came up.
Alright. Those who have been playing awhile, or who have been around, has noticed that people will debate on whether the knights/ascalon aborbtion is universal, or locational. That being said, many people have done their own testing, and found that using a knights/ascalon helm helps you reduce the damage being done to you, thus claiming it to be universal. And other than that, lots of people prefer that helm over the glad's.
As said earlier about wearing different sets of knight pieces, same theory applies. Sometimes I do it, sometimes I don't. But you will have to come up with your own conclusions.

IMO: absorb damage is universal
Has anyone actually gone to Anet and asked them to end this debate once and for all?

Cswella, if you go around the site, it will say that that knights/ascalon is specifically locational. However, there have been a lot of people who claim to have tested it out, and find it universal.
In my opinion, I say it is locational. Added with the percentage of the parts of your body that are hit.

OK a couple things
if we are talking about farming Griffs.
1) Glads is the best armor because it also gives +20 against physical so its better than platemail without the energy bonus.
2) Energy items work fine instead of shields, I got malinons shield and found the extra -2 reduction + 16AL makes a HUGE difference in my health bar and so now I use that, but I used to use an energy item and it worked fine.
3) I have the 15K ascalon helm because it looks cool. While I am farming griffons I rarely see any fluctuation in damage they do to me, its almost allways 16 dmg. So the absorption theory is questionable, I think its global based on that observation, but Anet has it on their site that its locational
I have a friend that is in love with dragons and therefore uses the wyvern armor and she has a much tougher time farming than I do. She has to use an offhand energy item, I dont :P
I hope this helps, this is just off the top of my head and only from experience, I dont have any factual evidence to back any of this up right now, so flame me if Im wrong :)

15k ascalon helm is the only 15k helm that offers damage reduction, same reason you see everyone running aroundin 15k glads, better enregy boost than the other armors. with the helm and full glads set you get a boost to energy and damage reducion, and its global.
gonna copy paste this part
The absorption property can be found both on the warrior’s knight/ascalon armor, as well as on runes of absorption. It works in the exact same way as bonus damage, except that it is the opposite. Absorption granted by armor applies to all damage regardless of where it came from. Absorption granted from runes, however, is only applied to damage that comes from a weapon attack (not spells).
If you are uncertain if a skill is classed as an attack, open up your skill list in the game, and set your skill ordering option to “type” and it will show you the skills that are counted as an attack. E.g. "Bow Attack", "Sword Attack".
The following is the absorption bonuses granted from the absorption property:
Knight's Armor -2
Ascalon Armor -2
Minor Rune -1
Major Rune -2
Superior Rune -3
The effects of the ascalon/knights armor will stack with the runes. Ascalon and knight armor absorption do not stack with each other. Thus, the maximum absorption a single player can get is -5 from a rune/armor combination.
Shields that have the –x damage modifier work in a similar fashion to absorption granted by the ascalon/knight armor. This effect stacks with the rune/armor absorption effect.
and this too
Armor in Guild Wars works in an interesting, yet effective way. There are 5 body locations in the game - they are your head, arms, legs, feet, and chest. When a player is hit for damage, the game randomly determines which body location gets hit. Player positioning (e.g.: hitting from the side or from above) as well as what skill is used (hamstring or skull crack for example) can force a character to hit a specific body location of the target, or at least increases the chances of you hitting that location. The chest has the highest chance to be hit, followed by your legs.
Once a hit location is determined, the game uses the Armor Level (AL) from the armor on the hit location for the damage calculations. When it comes to spells, the hit location is nearly always the chest, unless the spell causes a projectile to fire at the target (e.g. lightning orb) in which case the hit location is randomly determined as usual.
As a basic reference, for every 40AL more than what your current armor has your damage gets halved. For every 40AL less than what your current armor has, your damage gets doubled.

hope that helped
