At one point does a controller become a beast?

I've heard a lot of talk about Controllers being extremely powerful in the higher levels. Now I know a lot of this is coming from Controllers themselves, so I was curious as to when this occurs. I'm simply not seeing how great they are now, and they haven't become a necessity in any of my daily activities in game.

When does the Controller curve hit? What level?

Re: At one point does a controller become a beast?

Well, I haven't been playing long, about a week or two. I have a lvl 16 Controller. I can still solo most of my missions with little problem. I'm thinking that controllers get good once they get an ae freeze type power. For example, when I hit lvl 18, I finally get Gravity Distortion Field which renders all foes in the area unable to take any action. This allows me to then smash them in the face with the few moderately damaging powers I have and not have to worry about taking a single hit. I'm a gravity/kinetics controller which seems to be one of the more damaging types while at the same time not being as good as some of the others at actually controlling. Right now I'm pretty useless in group except for the odd times that I manage to get a boss with a hold power, allowing the rest of my group to kill him with ease.

Re: At one point does a controller become a beast?

I think a lot of controllers come into their own around 18th level, where they pick up their AE Hold powers. That, and enemies become drastically more powerful - gone are the days of beating up hapless Skulls and Hellions. Enter the Sky Raiders with their teleporting and force fields, the Tsoo with their crowd control and teleporting healers (Holding that teleporting enemy alone is worth it's weight in frustration for a tank/scrapper :D ), and many other power using cretins.

Not to mention that the controllers powers suddenly become more powerful (i.e. longer holds, more accurate) due to them picking up DOs. Sure, everyone gets more powerful...but a Blaster doing 10% more damage is small potatoes to a Controller keeping an extra Lt. out of the fight entirely.

Also, as a Grav/FF controller, I can almost replace a healer for certain missions, as between me locking up bad guys, and my FF shields on teammates, members of the team are taking considerably less damage. Sure, I'm not adding damage output...but I'm making encounters much, much safer.

As some folks mentioned I think when they get their AE holds you start to see the power of them. Also in some cases like Illusion Controller who gets Spectral Army (which causes 2-4 Phantoms to attack the target) they get some powerfull allys.

Re: At one point does a controller become a beast?

AoE hold really isn't it. The AoE hold makes grouping great but its usually a big waste of end when your soloing.

The single target hold is godlike for soloing tho, most of them do damage so you can use it to kill an enemy and as long as you don't miss 2 times in a row they will never get a hit in.

Your right about illusion lol. Soon as I hit 18 I got spectral army, now I can solo Red bosses.

It comes down to, with all the various lockdowns and tricks were given, especially in solo missions, things are pretty easy but there is on problem. We have very little damage output. And when I say very little I mean it. Using my most damaging powers I can burn thru half my End taking down a white enemy.

Re: At one point does a controller become a beast?

yeah, I just hit 18 and got my ae hold. It isn't as great as I hoped it would be. I haven't had a chance to put that many enhancement slots in it, but once I do, it should get better. Right now, it costs a ton of end, is moderately inaccurate, and has almost as slow a recharge as rest. Definately putting both my slots into it at 19 so I can make it more accurate and faster recharge.

Re: At one point does a controller become a beast?

Yah I have Flash 6 slotted, 2 Recharge, 2 Accuracy and 2 hold duration. Its still an End hog but I only use it in groups and generally only hafta use it once per fight, with the 2 recharge i got (both DO) it comes back fast enough that I can use it every fight in a big group.

Antigrav I notice you said "The odd time I can get a hold to work on a Boss" in one of your earlier posts. As long as your hold connects it always takes effect even on bosses (most monsters and archvillains are immune).

The way it works is what the devs call magnitude, every status dealing attack has a magnitude which decides how effected a mob is by a status effect. Lets take Controller's single target hold for example.

All Controller's single target hold attacks have a magnitude of 3. now your standard minion has a resistance of -1. If you hit with your hold that bring thier resistance to 2 and they are held. They gradually regain thier resistance with time and when they get back to 0 the hold wears off.

Lts recover thier resistance faster than minions and bosses faster than Lts.

Lts have a base resistance of -2
Bosses have a base resistance -3

That is why you can generally hold Lts also with one shot tho on occasion it fails.

And note bosses have -3. One shot of your hold power will bring them to 0, they are still active, but every time you smack them with a hold it brings down thier resistance and with blind I estimate with the recharage i am catching a boss at -1 maybe just before he gets down to -2 (my first successful hold is always short) after that my holds keep building and eventually i can get a full lock-down. If my AoE lands on the boss I can blind him right away and get a nice long hold on him and maintain it with little problems as long as i don't miss.

The only status effect that ever breaks magnitude 3 is Taunt which has magnitude 4, all the rest are magnitude 3 or lower

Re: At one point does a controller become a beast?

That's odd cause just the other day I was fighting a clockwork prince with a scrapper and my single target hold snagged him first shot. Yet the previous four fights against that type of mob, all my hold could do was slow it down, sometimes not even that.

There is a bit of randomness in there. sometimes you get a lil bit of extra magnitude and sometimes you get a bit less

Sweet. I was worried that there was no such thing as randomness and if I couldn't hit x lvl with y, then I couldn't hit any of lvl x with y.

Re: At one point does a controller become a beast?

Try using radition control as a second power set, so that you get accelerate metabolism, then utilize the speed power pool and take hasten. By putting lots of recharge enhancements into these 2 powers, you can boost both the amount of time it takes you to deal and the amount of damage you are dealing. In addition, accelerate metabolism is an aoe buff, so all allies within range, get the added damage and endurance recovery.

Yes I would say this is very true. LV32+ and higher controllers are awesome and very strong. With their special powers and lots of new tricks I love to keep them in my team. I would probably say the same goes with my Blaster. Once you hit LV32 and get Inferno (last Primary Power) I went from okay to awesome. Inferno kills groups of 15-20 men in one blow with only 1 slot!!! Imagine 6 slots all dam... ;)

Controllers are weak at low levels but once you get that high level around 32+ your good to go. You will walk around owning everyone and impressing them with your powers.

That's just my 2 cents.

All the best,
Mike

Re: At one point does a controller become a beast?

I would have to agree with Minus driver. Its not untill 32 that controllers get their recognition. Have you ever seen what a group of 10 well buffed fire imps can do? I think once they get their pets is when they come of age and are repaid for the slow slow grind in the earlier levels.

If you ask me my Aoe elec/dev blaster nearing 35 is almost put to shame by a 32 Ill/Rad or fire/kin controller.

I have actually found Ice controllers to be tougher at lower levels rather then higher. Sure, they are the least damaging controller, but they can disable a group easily at around level 12. Or so mine can.

Hummm,

I can tell you right now my Ill/Emp Controller is at his weakest in mid 20's. After being able to trash Clocks, Vahz and various gangs at will in his teens, entering the twentys has the effect of reducing him to a newbie in comparison to the new foes. It like leaving Elementry school and going to High school. It took 3 hours to do one mission last night solo. Now, as long as he in in a team, he does pretty well.

Now once he hits 32 and gets his final Primary power, he will be the Beast, so to speak.

I have a level 17 ice controller. He is bad to the bone. Everyone I team up with, just loves the holds I have. I can hold SEVERAL villains at a time while they pound and shoot them. Tanks and scrappers love controllers. We are very helpful the more enhancements you get, the better. A contoller is a very important part ot a team.

Re: At one point does a controller become a beast?

I would have to agree that a controller does contribute if you find the right one for you. I wouldn't say so much as pinpoint a level that they reach but how they fight, which powers they choose first and so forth. My controller has been accidentally called a tanker during the WL hunts...but an emp controller is real handy! and i cannot wait to see how powerful she gets at 32~

I fully agree with this statement. My mind controller (Chalk, lvl 21 Mind/Bubble, Infinity) has been rockin' in my mind for quite some time. I lock down a room and make it easy pickings for everyone in the team. Even if we accidentally aggro too many, I can usually handle it. I can solo, but it takes longer because of damage dealt, and I just think she really shines in a team setting. I would go so far to say that a good controller without healing is almost as important as a healer... ALMOST. It is hard to take damage when nobody can touch you!

Re: At one point does a controller become a beast?

I am now a level 34 almost 35 ice/shield contoller. I have become VERY powerful. All of my holds are 6 slotted. I am able to take on villains that are 3 levels higher than myself without any problems. Bosses are of course are a little rougher to deal with. With Jack Frost I can even solo missions without takeing two weeks to do one (LOL). My shields are very strong as well. I have watched my team mates take hit after hit after, and not take a whole lot of damage.
Once again, in my opinion, a good controller is sooooo beneficail to a successful team where you will be facing large mobs. I did a level 50 AV mish last night, with an SG member. I was SKd, and I could not believe how easy it was to hold these mobs. For all of you ice controllers out there, ice slick and glacier are a must when you get high enough to get them. Get them 6 slotted and you will be amazed at how powerful you are. ALWAYS get hasten and stamina as soon as you can and get them 6 slotted. Acrobatics is next for me. And then I will get re-call friend for my lower level friends who I SK, to help them get to my mishes safely. I have had too many lower level friends die on their way to one of my mishes. But not until I make Glasher as powerful as he can be. I can not wait to hit level 40. I have heard, "you think you are powerful now. Just wait till 40".

Nah, that aint it. My first controller had and AoE bind called "fire cage" at first level. It's not a freeze but with slicers, slammers and sluggers to fight it might just as well be.

Well this is late but I want to put my $0.02 in the plater. I play a lvl 47 Illusion/Storm controller. I thought I was pretty bad @ 18 with Phantam Army. When I more slots and could cast them every min I ruled (about 24). I found true solo power at about 35, with all my storm powers and ill pets at hand. I cause made chaos in indoor zones and mobs are flying everywhere. But then again I think decive it a GOD send.. some people just dont know the true power of charm. (Ill controllers can get that @ lvl 2

Re: At one point does a controller become a beast?

I know my Troller is a lowbie fire/kin but they love my ability to use char and ring of fire on an enemy so they can't do anything and take about 40 dam. But what I really can't wait for is my imps! I can clean the streets and allys of Paragon with ease and not have to attack a single one as long as I can keep my imps alive and bufferized! I blasted with a lvl 36 fire troller and those imps took all my aggro! (Fire blasters make a lot of agro) So you see how happy that made me. Moral of the 2 cents... imps pwn! Their mobs take all the agro and a swarm on a boss does quite a bit of damage.

I like my earth/emp controller....though I would spec out of emp if I could.

I hate being plugged specifically to heal.

Your a controller...don't control...heal you OMG WTF noob!!!

*sigh*

Anyways my powers arn't fully slotted seeing as I'm only lvl 22.

Earth controllers lower monster defense though. I am accurate and once I get a hit I seldom miss.

This is true even vs purple bosses :P.

GODSEND for groups when you stop missing high lvl bosses completely and get healed when you take a smack.

Like I said though...I wish I had avoided emp.

Re: At one point does a controller become a beast?

My favorite Controller, Mr Brightside, is at level 36, and I'd definitely place him in the "rounded character" category before I'd label him as a monster. Of course, I didn't build him for solo play. With the addition of his Radiation Emission secondary, Bright can buff, debuff, heal, res, deal damage, and hold aggro (thank you Phantom Army and Phantasm). It's a beautiful thing. The downside is that he's still not the best solo character in the game. Although I can eek through any mission without major issues, I always have to wait for each of my best powers to recharge before taking on a bunch. I would highly recommend making a Controller and taking him to the upper levels, but don't expect to become a complete badass once you hit 32. Your goal should be to make one of the best team oriented heroes running around Paragon.

Re: At one point does a controller become a beast?

Okay, in the beginning of the room, people were talking about Illusion getting their first pet(s). What about EARTH CONTROLLERS? Earthquake... AWSOME Skill. Being a old player of CoH (had account disabled for about a year; want to activate it again...) I know a decent amount. Fire controllers used to be the best, by far. Everyone wanted one... I read a few posts on MIND CONTROLLERS. I'm scared. I thought...... "Oh yeah! Mind controllers suck! Their level 32 skill is pointless and they can do no damage." I must admit. I was wrong. They seem decently godly. So when I do get my account activated, again, i'll make a Mind Controller. I already have a horrible fire controller (level 25ish)..and a level..uhh...20 Illusionist?..Lol, not sure. From pure experience, I can answer this topic question in a two word answer. HELL YES!

Re: At one point does a controller become a beast?

I think the reason why people thought Fire trollers were best is because you can summon up to four groups of multiple imps. It's a godsend for blasters because it helps doing a tanks job but a pain for a healer to keep alive. And anyone with melee might not like it as much because they kinda get in the way. And yes blasters do get insane when they get their pets. Illusion maybe most of all because phantom army can't die and phantasm can make phantasm decoys as well as be able to get teleported between floors in a door mish.

Not a problem. I'm more than willing to chat. You can always PM me here, or when you get your account back, just send me a tell @Mynd Warp.

Again, I'd like to reiterate that not all Controllers become beasts at 32. Every character has the ability to become a solo fiend once they get into the higher levels, but most Controllers are created specifically for team play because we're forced to team by our low damage capability. I understand that some simply use a respec once they decide that it's solo time, but I've left Bright rounded for continued team play. Since the majority of the 40+ missions contain some sort of AV, I think it's best to maintain enhancements in team buffs instead of pumping damage into my offensive powers.

Re: At one point does a controller become a beast?

Once I got Mass Hypnosis I became a force to be reckoned with. I could hit a group from a distance, and they wouldn't even know I was there. Then I'd start in with the real attacks, domination and mesmerize, doing double damage as long as the first sleep held.

For a finale, I'd give 'em the ol' upsie-daisy with levitate. I like to save it for last just in case they wake up.

I can even hold my own with red bosses if no one else is around. Sleep and mesmerise regen fast enough that I can alternate shots and keep them from answering back.
