| Considering Hanging Up My Cape and Picking Up A Lightsaber.... |

Yep, I'm nearing 50, and I feel like I've been everywhere and done everything. Coh has been a blast, but there's not enough new content for me to really want to do it all over again!
Star Wars Galaxies is making some huge changes to the way it operates, I hear. I guess the gameplay is going to modeled after WoW a little, which I'm guessing isn't too far from being like CoH. But I don't know, never played WoW or Galaxies before...
Anyways, I was hear before the Winter Lords were, and I'm just kinda dissapointed that there isn't that much new stuff at all. Maybe I'll pick it up again in the future. I'm not quitting yet, I want to get Brim up to 50 first, so that I can feel like I "beat" the game.
So, anyone out there can tell me anything about Galaxies?
Here are some things that sound appealing to me:
More open ended. Not stuck being a blaster for life I guess, you can get super armor and stuff like that. Plus, all the differnt occupations sound neat to me.
Is it true that you can pick up a new weapon, and be able to fire it like 5 different ways? That sounds really cool, with CoH you get stuck with your powerset, and you can't really "throw" it away and get a new one - you have to start a new character.
Anyone know how PvP works? Is it optional, free for all, zones, etc?
You know how 22 is like "the" super level in CoH, because you can get SOs? Well, what about galaxies, how long till you're really super?
This isn't a slam on CoH, I love it, but think I need something new after I hit 50. If anyone knows anything, lemme know... thanks! :-)

Sorry to hear you are leaving. But I can understand. No game lasts forever. I am still having fun with it, and will for some time. I got newly addicted to City of Villains. It is different enough that it seems like a new game, but without the learning curve a lot of MMORPGs have. I don't know much about SWG. The only thing I heard from it is from a big group of dissatisfied SWG players looking for a new home. But I doubt it means a lot. There are unsatisfied players with any game. Still, if you look for something new you definately should have a look at Dark and Light.

I've played SWG in fact that was the first on line game I played. Being a huge star wars fan I thought it would be fun and cool. I quickly got turned off from it because it just didnt to have a star wars feel about it. I havent went back since they've added hyperspace etc. I just know initiallly it had alot of bugs and seemed like they were counting on all us star wars fans to automatically like it beacuse it was star wars. Thats was well over a year ago so it may have changed since then, initially though it was a very poor product in my opinion. For star wars I'tt stick to Battle front II.

It's not THAT bad. In fact, I like it as an occasional break from CoH. I definately prefer CoH, though.

I was a beta tester on "Galaxies" and I can tell you that what tk0091 says was very true about the game at launch. Lots of bugs and incomplete concepts. However, they worked a lot of the problems out over the following year from what I've been told. The inclusion of vehicles alone must have made the flow of action so much better.
I wish I could tell you more about weapons. It has been a long time since I last played and then I was a medic minoring in trade. The nice thing about "Galaxies" compared to "CoH" is the ability to cultivate skills beyond pure offense and defense.
The funny thing is I quit when all the characters seemed to weak and irrelevant to the ongoing story of the game. Now the most common complaint I hear is that the characters have gotten to strong and they can do things that come close to countering "Star Wars" cannon.

if the idea of being able to totally rework your character appeals to you, then SWG used to be the game to look at. that was my game of choice prior to getting into CoH, but the changes they made with their "Combat Upgrade" back in the spring seriously cramped my fun -- my toon was a Master Doctor, but by only healing the others on my team, I was collecting more agro than the heaviest hitting tank :(
add to this, SOE is about to impliment a massive change to the system, effective this coming Tuesday (the 15th) -- formerly, there were 30-some professions where you could mix or match skills within limits. the upcoming "New Game Enhancements" will trim that to 9 "iconic" professions - once you chose one of these, you're locked into the advancement track for that profession (no more picking which skills you want - you just get the next one along the track). formerly, you could surrender skills and start learning something new - with NGE, the only way to change your character's profession will be to delete the character and start over.
oh, by the way... it'll also be a FPS system -- put the mouse curser on your target and click to attack... my accounts there are still active for a bit yet, but they're flagged as 'cancelled' and likely to stay that way, I think. but, I'd encourage you to check the SWG forums at forums.station.sony.com/swg for more information if you think might still be interested

Yeah, it's worse than ED. I don't want to invest the time to get my characters set up for the professions I want them to stay in (except maybe Sen. Xenophon), so this is probably the end for me. I'm not even sure how the integration of older characters is going to work, really.

Ya, I can understand that. You know, ED wouldn't suck if we had all STARTED the game with it! Kinda like what this new thing sounds like. Well, newcomers like me won't really know the difference...

up until today, that would be possible - SWG was structured with 6 or 8 "basic" professions and 20-some "elite" professions that built off of the basic ones. on the combat side, you'd generally need 2 columns from 1 or 2 basic professions. so, it was possible to be a Bounty Hunter/Smuggler, a Rifeleman/Ranger, a Swordsman/Creature Handler, a Chef/Architect, a Doctor/Merchant, etc, etc...
with the system that's going live tomorrow (after only being announced a couple weeks ago), you'll have a choice of one of these nine: Trader, Entertainer, Officer, Commando, Spy, Medic, Smuggler, Bounty Hunter or Jedi. Trader further breaks down into four specializations - Domestic Goods, Structures, Munitions, or Engineering. the professions of Creature Handler and Bio-Engineer are being removed from the game - the justification being that very few players are in those professions out of the whole player base. of course, the background on that is that many of the skills in those professions are 'broken', and over time people have lost hope that they'll ever be fixed and drifted away :(
once you select your profession, you'll be "locked in" - the only way to change professions will be to delete the character (thus, losing all your possessions unless you've got a friend or guildie to hold onto things temporarily for you - though some items will be 'untradeable'). additionally, each profession will have a rigid 'track' of skills - as you level up, you get the next skill on the list -- no choices or options on skill selection.
combat will be changing from the current "click on something, then press hotkeys to execute attacks and moves" to an FPS-type system of "put the mouse pointer on the target and click to attack"
there's been some suggestion that the game is being "dumbed down" so it can be ported to console. it's also anticipated that the changes to the crafting side of the game (being buttonholed into Trader specializations) is intended to discourage players from those professions so that SOE will later have "justification" to remove crafting from the game because so few players have that type of character (am I starting to get to cynical?) :P
hope that helps

thanks for the warm welcome folks. I'm glad I was able to assist.
on the "bright side" (if that's possible), at least the changes that SOE is implementing tomorrow will make it possible for someone brand new to the game to actually pick up a lightsabre without having to jump through all sorts of convoluted hoops or endlessly grinding xp for months on end to "unlock" the option to be a jedi. whether this is a good or bad thing still remains to be seen ;)

Heh, I said I was CONSIDERING chainging games... I downloaded a demo of WoW last night... it was ok, I liked the idea of being able to do something besides combat to get xp (seeing new towns, delivering crap, etc...), but I'm not really into the Warcraft as RPG. I did beat several times and absolutly loved Warcraft II though 10 years ago...
Today, I downloaded the demo for SWG, so I'll be giving it a try for about 10 days or so, see if I like it. If not, I don't know what I'll do. Maybe become a villian, maybe work on that Ice/Energy blaster.
Man, I had a fire/devices blaster that had so much potential to be total awesome damage machine. ED really has sucked the motavation to build a character right out of me...
*sigh*

To be completely honest, I tried Star Wars Galaxies a few months ago while waiting for COV to issue my beta invite. And playing for only about a week, I very quickly turned it off and canceled my account before my free month was up. With 1 GB RAM and a good 256k Vid Card, it was still laggier than the beta for COV and the game seemed extremly slow. The people online were extremely rude, and very unhelpful when it came to the ins and outs of the game. The game has a very "commercial" feel, like they included alot of elements to a new game just to stick a STAR WARS label on it, as opposed to creating a game based on the series. After a few boring quests (mainly picking up an item and carrying it halfway across a planet to give it to someone and then taking an item and delivering it elsewhere, over and over)and deaths to enemies far higher than myself that seemed right outside the initial tatooine zone, I finally just gave up and made a squid. The best advice I can give, as COH/COV is the first MMORPG I've played with any consistency (I tried EQ for about 2 months when it first came out), is buy the game and expansions for $30, and let the game make or break itself. You get a free month, and you can always come back if it is truly as bad for you as it was for me. Regardless, good luck, and may the Schwartz be wit' you.

I know when I heard about SW:G I was tempted to be drawn into it like a wavering Jedi to the dark side, but I fought those impulses...then I learned about CoH and was immediately drawn to that. :)

/reminise about the 'good old days'
ah yes... SWG... I remember, back in the day....
up til about April of this year, SWG didn't have "Character Levels" - your character was what skill boxes you'd learned/earned/bought, combat wasn't the be-all-end-all of the game. lots of folks were quite happy to be crafters or entertainers and stay away from the combat
then came the ""Combat Upgrade"" - suddenly, everyone had a Combat Level ranging from 1 to 80 - and the various crafters and entertainers were all "1" - aka "meat waiting to be smacked" by any random mob. crafting and entertaining were marginalized, even though it was claimed that they still wanted crafting as an integral part of the game.
finally came the New Game Enhancements which, in my opinion, further shoved crafting and entertaining aside, in favour of the combat monkeys. in many ways, it is a whole new game - I don't know that it's any more "Star Wars" than it was before - consider that the timeline is supposed to be between A New Hope and Empire Strikes Back, and yet you've got jedi all over the place and even the option to be a jedi when you start your character. kinda doesn't fit, does it...
in a way, I kinda wish now that I hadn't resisted the temptation to pick up CoH back in December when I had the opportunity. oh well, better late than never I guess ;)

| Hmmm... What About KOTOR II??? |
|
|
|
Well, one of the biggest things that drew me towards SWG was the "open-endedness" that I thought it had. After playing it for a few days, you level up pretty much just like the do in COH.
That would be fine, if there was something COOL that happened when you leveled up. Nope, nat-ah. At lvl 4, I got a second, "more powerful" attack. I thought, ok, cool... CRAPPY ANIMATION!!!
Where are the cool graphics in this game that everyone says is there?
If I want a FPS, I'll break out Half-Life 2, Star Wars Battlefront, Medal of Honor, and Call of Duty! I own all of these games and they flat out ROCK for FPS - but I dropped them all in January of last year for COH and have been playing COH non-stop ever since.
So, SWG tries to be like and FPS-RPG and sucks BAD at it. I was hoping that you could get multiple weapons and that they would have diverse forms of attacking with them (i.e. lots of cool animation) but this falls sadly short. I so wanted cool loot.
WoW rocks for loot and stuff like that, so much better game. But, it feels like I'm playing D&D and that just creeps me out - personal thing.
So, I've come to this conclusion, I'm going to probably stay with COH, because, well, it rocks. And I HOPE that they add some new content.
PLEASE ADD SOME COOL LOOT JACK!!! I WANT COH LOOT!!!
Like, how about a ring that shoots out a laser?
I guess that's what temporary powers are... but the idea of having your own house, having an inventory... having more depth to the game like pysical attributes (constitution, agility, blah) ...... I think would be nice. Would kinda screw things up to in some ways.
So, I think I'm ganna get me COV, so I can do the whole base thing. AND I'm thinking about getting KOTOR II, to satisfy my in depth RPG urge.
I remember playing KOTOR I, and I think I really liked it. Is the second one any good? Anyone know? Please lemme know if you know.... and are there any demos out there for it?

SWKOTOR 2 is fun but annoying at the sametime as you are playing the first one again but now you can acctually affect how the people around you react to you and you can train many of them to be Jedi. The most annoying thing for me was the loot system it is great and sucks for the same reason, it is completely random what you will get. While it adds a good thing for replay value it get very annoying when all you are finding are gammorean war axes, I found 5 of them in a row once, when you are just trying to find parts for your lightsaber or higher end medical supplies.

I am new here, but I have played both games so I thought I would share a few things about Galaxies.
I have never had more fun in a game than I did with SWG when it released. The day I reached master marksman (a basic profession) I felt like such a dork, I put up my master tag so everyone could see it and hung out in the cantina talking to "newbs" for about an hour. Then I went off to get my 40k combat xp to be a novice bounty hunter. This took about a week. Along my journey, I picked up creature handler, this profession could be one of the most erratating and exciting things you could do in a game. Imagine this, you spot a baby rancor, but it is surrounded by it's parents. Your job is to sneak up to it and tame it before the family rips you to shreads. I spent at least 8 hours crawling around Dathimor with my mask scent skill on before I tamed my first one. I named him Bubba and took him everywhere with me. My account is still active and he is in my data pad but unfourtunatly I can no longer bring him out.
Somewhere along the line, soe decided that no one was ever going to figure out their system for unlocking jedi. SO they released "holocrons" this one simple item ruined the game. It told everyone what profession they had to master in order to unlock a jedi slot. And everyone had to hit the right 5 out of 32. The game went from " Lets go raid Theed " to "Can I buy some metal from you, I need to grind out weaponsmith?' I wanted a jedi more than anything, but there was no way I was going to drop master bounty hunter, which took me 3 months just to get the investigation line done, to be an image designer and cut hair in a video game.
After a while, sony figured out that holocrons were a bad idea and implemented a force village. This was even worse than holocrons. I actually set up my character so that I was a master of 2 elite professions with spin attacks so that I could go out in 2 hours each night and max out xp for both and then head to the village to exchange the xp for jedi xp at a 30 to 1 ratio.
The straw that finally broke my back was that the village went in cycles opening a skill line every 4 weeks. So after a year and a half of playing, I was told " Ohh, we know you want a jedi, you can grind xp for the next 12 weeks and if you are fast enough you can have a jedi"
I left and did not play a mmorpg until this summer when a coworker talked me into playing COH. The game was fun, no work involved, just log in and play.
In October, I decided to log into my SWG account to say hello to some old friends. I played for 3 days and never found anything interesting to do. The missions are bland in comparison to COH. It was much easier now to jump in to galaxies and start playing, but there was nothing to do but grind out xp and trade it in for jedi xp. So I logged back into COH and had some fun.
2 days ago a friend of mine called me to tell me they changed Galaxies again and I needed to try it. Finally I could be a Jedi. I logged in, respeced my toon, called a friend who owe's me everything he has in that game and got some crystals for my saber and set out to kill some low level mob. I am not to sure about the clicking combat stuff, but I am going to try it out some more.
Sorry I was so long winded, Galaxies started out as the best game that I ever played. It sounds to me like COH has been that for you. Maybe you should give COV a try, I know I am having a blast with my Dominator.
