Having played a numerous amount of blasters and a handful of scrappers I must say, for anyone who can stick w/ a scrapper and stay alive on a consistent basis, I'm impressed!
I feel like my scrappers are simply blasters w/o range, which... well, sounds crazy to me, but to each his own. Damage output? Yes... Shatters like Glass? Yes...
My compliments to all the Scrappers in the game.

Scrappers survive by thier defensive power set, unfortunately it takes a bit for that to have any meaningful effect and some defensive sets take longer than others some examples
Reflexes: come level 20 they will finally have a well rounded defense against both melee and ranged attacks (but they still will be waiting for AoE defenses).
Regeneration: The best power in the set, the one that gives the absolute best survivability is instant healing, which a scrapper can't touch until lvl 28.
Invulnerability: by lvl 20 they will have the stand by's that tankers rely on to not die instantly maybe a bit before, this one definately is more useful sooner.
Dark Armor: Unique power set that i haven't gotten the chance to play with yet, if i could give an informed estimate on it i would.

I have a scrapper (lvl unknown...) who is a Katana/Super Reflexes gal, and I do love her, but don't play her that often. I have searched deep into my soul, and found that I am more suited to be a Tanker!! Muhahaah!!
I do love to tinker with my non-tank chars, tho...
Until next time...

Well I went through 5 scrappers until i finally found one I like. Martial Arts/ Regen. But I will admit it was a hard road. I spent many a day in debt. But things seem to be working out for me now lvl 34 and climbing. All I can say is stick with it, because you can count on a lot of disappointment until you reach higher levels

I have a lowish level scrapper, who I play...to be honest... when I don't want anyone to know who I am. I picked a scrapper because I need to do damage and I have a couple of blasters.
This one uses the broad sword, which is a little slow. I tried the claws (did a cat character) and did not like them, though that was a couple of months ago. I think the reason I didn't like them was they didn't do enough damage.
Actually, now that I have gotten used to keeping my main (blaster) out of harm's way, I am much better about keeping an eye on my scrapper and moving away from the bad guys, so this one is lasting longer too. I don't remember which secondary sets I used on either scrapper. I like to pick powers that are always on, so it might be invuln.

Since my last post, I have been concentrating on my katana/super reflexes gal, and actually got her up to lvl 13. my next goal is doing a TF with her and seeing if I get a good group and survive the experience.
My other character is an energy/energy blaster that I've gotten up to lvl 12, and I'll be working on getting a tanker up to that level so I can be multi-talented :)
See ya at the expresso bar!

Well, I started a TF with my Katana gal, and she's still recovering from her debt load from the multiple, multiple deaths she experienced....
I'd say I was in a good group, but they (and I) just couldn't keep up with the fact that I was getting beaten up by several purple mobs at a time...
I'll keep you posted....

to be completely honest i found the 1st tf a lot harder than the 2nd one.... it took me 8 or 9 groups to find one to actually finish the 1st one, and w/ the second one it was the 1st group i was in and we finished it in 4 hours or so (the 1st one took 8 1/2 hours ahhhhhh) so don't get discourged!

I agree with that Jeni. I found the first TF harder than the following 2 actually. So don't get discouraged with TF's just because the first one doesnt go well :)

The key to playing a successful scrapper is to always be prepared, and over my debt-filled career as a katana/dark armor scrapper (who has hacked and sliced his way up to lvl 25) I have found no better scrapper ability than Dark Regeneration. Now, I can solo large mobs (that do not have Lts/bosses who immobolize). I'm currently soloing mobs of Sky Raiders in Terra Volta and getting some kick-@ss xp. And I could not be doing this without Dark Regen.
If anyone is interested in knowing to play a Katana/Dark Armor scrapper (at least, up to lvl 25) that works great in solo play, I could be persuaded to write up a guide based on my own power selections.
I will admit that its very difficult to play a solo scrapper at 25, but it is possible. As I advance in level, I guess I'll find out how much more difficult its going to become.

We would of course love to have your guide if you wouldn't mind taking the time to write it up!
For anyone thinking about starting a Martial Arts or Katana Scrapper though you may want to wait at least until episode 2 is released before doing so.
Statesman made the following quote regarding the future of Martial Arts and Katana Scrappers...

Statesman - Just an FYI...Martial Arts animations have been significantly shortened (and reworked) for Expansion 2. Yep. The one going live soon.
And we may- and I stress may - be able to get in the Katana animations, too. We're testing those right now (literally) and slipping them in. So thank our producer, Craig Zinkevich, for letting us designers slip it in! Hip hip hooray! |

A shorter animation time for katanas would be much appreciated! Personally, I've leared to work around it, and it doesn't bother me so much that I just don't think about it anymore.

Yeah I think it will be a very welcome change all the same. I personally like Katana, but I have heard a number of folks refer to it jokingly as "Broadsword Light" since it is almost as slow and doesn't do as much damage. Having a faster animation and reset time will bring it more into its own I think.

I love my scrapper, lvl 22 MA/Regen and when update 2 comes out I'll be even happier. Like the Katana folk we suffer from long animation times but I tried the test server today and the new animations are so fast it's beutiful. Yeah there's a lot of debt but that was partially because of it being my first toon (for example I didn't get super jump till 18) and I didn't know where to go or what to do. Scrappers are fun, run in, slugg it out and see who is the best fighter you or the baddies. There's a post on the official board about the "Zen" of scrapping which I think does a good job of explaining the reasons why the AT is so loved.
FYI if you want to make a */Regen scrapper the power to get asap is reconstruction (and/or dull pain if you're patient) a near instant heal is a wonderfull mid battle pick me up, though I died a lot hoping it would recharge for a second go.

I have an DM/Regen scrapper I have been enjoying so far. Only L 13 to this point. Have reconstruction and Siphon life so far which give me a couple of heals. From what I hear the DM scrappers dont get faster animations like the MA/Katana (guess we are fast enough already) but they are going to add heal enhancements to Siphon Life which will let us reap more health out of that attack. Still pretty sweet I guess :)

After playing my lvl 26 katana/dark armor scrapper for a few hours on the test server, I am simply floored by how much better this new update has made katana-wielders. Before, there was hardly little distinction between katanas and broad-swords. Now, the differeces are easier to see.
At first, I was a little thrown by the new animations and the quicker recharge, but it wasn't long before I had adjusted. Me and some friends tried to run the respec team force, and just as we were beginning, we got a message saying the server was going down for maintance in 30 minutes. The five of us flew thru the missions, jumping from one to the next with no resting at all. It was a crazy mad dash to see if we could beat the TF before the servers went down. In the end, I am sorry to say that it was simply too much, but we came so so so very close, with the servers going down around about half-way thru the last mission in the reactor.
I also noticed that it seems that my scrapper was doing more critical hits than usual. Is anyone else noticing this on the test server?
Well, I'm going to try the respec again, but I'm anxious for the update to go live on the main servers. Here's hoping that there are few bugs to fix, and Cryptic can get this out as soon as possible.
This game just keeps getting better!

*jumping up and down in excitement*
I played with my Katana girl on the test server recently too, and I LOVE IT!! Not that I didn't enjoy playing a katana to begin with, but this patch makes the AT more like a katana-wielder should be.
I now feel like a crazy 88, rather than just looking like one :))

Martial arts scrappers are much better also. I'm attempting to get an "average" MA/regen scrapper to at least 20 before the patch. (he is 15) so I can go from decent, to uber.
With perminant hasten at 22, i'll almost need stamina because i'll be attacking so fast. (even tho he has quick recovery)

I play a scrapper on Triumph. 32 MA/Inv scrapper. I went with a different approach - I concentrated on defence going for a semi-tanker type character. There are soooo many Blasters running around that I find I don't need to slot offence. The non-endureace powers in Inv make me very Stamina efficient. I can solo easily and rarely die. Obviously my defence powers are six slotted and i took the Fitness Pool. I have great time, and everyone is impressed how tuff my character is - I often Tank if a group has low level Tankers. My damage output helps mee hols aggro , and of course the Taunt powers are available. Everyone is in love with the Regen scrapper, but consider the Inv scrapper if you dare not to be the a gingerbread man.

That sounds like a good build for a scrapper! Everybody knows we are nothing but "Tank lite" so why not make the most of it?

I must make an update. I was smoking something (and not sharing) in my earlier post - i was 27 not 32. I am 31 now (really I swear!!) and I can say without equivication that my Scrapper did not come into his own until their late 20s. Moreover, until I did a respec and fixed my build per the guid I posted on this site. For me it was like they flipped a switch at level 28. I am now 31 and can take out 10 34s minions in Bricks hands down (crey-5th). I have solod 36 snipers (Crey) in Creys Folly. I can take 2 35 LTs. I have taken out large groups of 33s with lts and bosses. These accomplishments are without Insps. When I was 27th level, I had to group as my other post stated. I logged in yesterday to bricks and was immidiately set upon by 4 34s 5th. 1 minion, 1 LT, and 2 bosses. I logged right into the end of a fight and there were 3 dead Heroes on the ground nearby. All four proceeded to kick the snot out of me (remember im 31). So i had to use a couple insps to boost my health and start my 5 defence powers: Invincibility, Stealth, Maneuvers, Dull Pain, Haste. Then I proceeded to kick the shit our of all four of the 5th assaulting me. When i was done I was suprised to find the three dead heroes join by their 2 buddies that ran. Four of them were 31s like me and 1 was 32. I didn't talk to them so I do not know if they had any Tankers or Scrappers with them. Now now now - before everyone starts calling for NERF!! I have to add comments:
First: I have no idea if this is a bubble and in a few levels another type like controller will be more powerful.
Second: I honestly am killed quickly if stunners/sleep etc users are in the groups - and the higher level you go the more of those there are.
Third: Psy damage goes strait through- mentalists f me up. Lots of those at higher levels too.
Fourth: Scrappers are the odd archtype out. We are not "the BEST" at anything. Blasters do more damage, Controllers Control, Defenders Keep everyone alive, tankers can take the most damage and taunt better. Scrappers are the hybrid class. In a sense I guess, we are the solo class - because a group doesn't really need a scrapper if they have the other four archetypes. However, woe it be to mobs encountering a group of scrappers - you should see the beat down they take.
Bah i've chortled enough.

I gotta aggree with u there, so often u get ppl screaming that someones build is too powerfull, just because they didn't build their character to work as well, either because of role-playing, or no research, or they don't care, but y hassle those who take the time to look into what they are doing? My main's a lvl 30 rad/rad defender, because of teh buffs and debuffs i can take on purples no problems on my own, lvl 33 bosses even, and that's a defender SOLO :) (since my respec that is) I guess i just get tired of ppl on the main forums bitching about this n' that power being too powerfull or a certain build being whatever, just cos u had the sense to choose the right combo of powers! If someone can solo mobs 4 lvls higher than themselves, then good for them!
I guess I'm back then... :)
