I don't know. I don't think I would really enjoy playing a game that had slaves in it. I know they are a HUGE part of history, but when I'm trying to escape reality I don't think I want to be seeing it.
Also there may be some younger people playing, and well I don't think that is something they should be exposed to in a game.
Don't get me wrong, I think it is good for people to know our history and the such, but when playing a game for entertainment purposes I think it is just best left out.
Anyone else have any opinions?

Maybe you could come up w/ a good "slave up rising" mission and submit it to this contest. If you win you get a chance to run it by a developer, and then you could bring up the issue w/ them not incorporating slaves into the game.

I guess I would have to agree with ya. I much prefer the blunt truth as a constant reminder of how things were screwed up in the past. It helps keep us down to earth and reminds us to value the things that we have.
I alse kinda have to agree with thejeni that when I'm trying to escape reality in a game, the last thing I want is something reminding me of how human I am. I know that might sound strange, but I like to get away from it all and relax sometimes and that is how I like to do it.
As for the reality issue, I agree also that if they are going to flaunt their game as being realistic, then they should go all the way, not just realistic in the things they want to. Otherwise, don't market it as a realitic game.
On the other hand, I'm not the developer. When you're the developer, you have to think of things like who's gonna be playing. If they can market their product to a wider audience by leaving some of the coarser aspects of history out, then it makes good money sense to do so.
I think I've stated my opinions, so I'll stop now. Who's next? :)
P.S. Oh yeah, one more opinion, I think the whole Political Correctness thing they are trying to push on us in the US is a load of BS. It's impossible to please everyone all the time, and if someone get offended, well too bad. Get over it. The best thing you can do is just be yourself, and try to respect other people for who they are, not what position they hold or how loud and outspoken they are. In the end, the fool will show himself as the fool he is and you will be able to tell who are the ones with their heads on straight and call it like it is.

If you guys want a 100% historically accurate game, then you go ahead and try to make one that sells well anywhere, much less the US. Here in good ol' America, we prefer to ignore the parts of history that are "boring" and "not fun." Seriously guys, who wants to be playing their game trying to relax and have some fun after work, when all of a sudden, a slave trading boat lands in your port, tosses their dead over the side, then whips the remaining live slaves off the boat and into town to be paraded around like cattle? That is not why I buy a Pirate game. I buy a Pirate game to BE A PIRATE. I don't want to have to think about buying/selling slaves, running into slave & racial uprisings, and bargaining with Triangle Trade. I was a History major in college for nearly 3 years, and I changed majors for a reason.
Now I'm not saying that we should completely ignore history and say it never happened. I'm just saying (in a somewhat extreme way) what Jeni said: people don't buy/play games to deal with those kinds of issues. The devs have to make sure that the game is acceptable for younger audiences too. Don't forget that kids are getting smarter and smarter (and better at computers) every day. My 7 year old cousin can fly and land a plane successfully in a flight sim game, why couldn't he roughly do the same on a boat and plunder and pillage at the same time? I don't recall learning about slavery until later in school. Would you want to be the one parents complain to about introducing their kids to "the black man in chains across the room?" If you do, then feel free to design a game yourself that deals with all the questionable issues in our world, then market it to kids, and wait for your paycheck. If it ever comes...
NOTE: A little harsh...yes. But I had to be to get my point across.
