great moments in n00bitry

i was playing with a lowb the other day and i experienced one of the largest n00b moves ever. so i thought i would post it and see if anybody else has any memorable n00b moments be that of self or others. so heres mine....

i was teamed with a emp def in the hollows and they had assault. they were like gather on me or you dont get the buff >_< i pm'd them and explained it was a toggle and not a click and how it was an 'aura'

on a more personal note, my own biggest n00b moment was when i came back to the game in may 05 after not having played or even kept up on the updates since august '04. i was all these squids and new zones and people 40+ and it was like i was playing another game. when i left the game i was confident in my knowledge of its working but when i came back, i spent the first few days just trying to figure all the changes with the new issues. looking back, i was a TOTAL N00B for the entire summer the game first came out. I played one toon and only got it to 27 over 3 months playing every single day! i look back now and think, how was i that bad?! i dunno, maybe it was because it was a brand new game and no one was really sure how it was to be played yet....

Re: great moments in n00bitry

I still remember the first time I played a Storm Controller. I thought back then that any power could do decent damage if you slotted it enough, so I put so many Damage on Gale that it started to do 3 damage instead of 2. That was before I found out the enhancements were percentage based.

Well that and picking teleport as my first travel power because "Now I'll be able to instantly zap to any point in the game. Wonder why so few players have it?".

Also my first week I wondered why the occasional player would stand at the Hollows gate and ask if anybody wanted toilet paper (Anybody need tp?).

Re: great moments in n00bitry

Playing in CoV today I saw a dominator was in trouble so I decided to sit next to him and drop some heals till he finished them off. Afterwards he started cursing me out for kill stealing and interference. Keeping my cool I explained that I didn't affect his fight in any way but to heal him. Once he understood he invited me to team. I thought 'Sure, I will help this new player learn the fundamentals, it will be my good deed for the day.' He had a mission selected so I ran to the location and waited out the door. After waiting close to five minutes , all the while me asking him to come to the mission he shows up and tells me that he thinks I am rude for ignoring him. This new player did not know that I could not hear him in local chat when he was across the board. After explaining this ...and how to select team talk, we started the mission. With him being new, I offered tactical advice to which he responded that he only had one attack and one hold. Confused I checked for the first time to see that he had not trained once...but he was fighting at level 7. After explaining this to him we finished the mission. I hit the exit button and then waited as he ran the entire mission back to the door. I told him repeatedly that he could just click the button to exit but he just said that he wasnt near the door. After much conversation I leared that he believed that he needed to be near the door to click the exit button. Clearing this up we moved on. I took him to a trainer and then the quartermaster for him to set himself up. As I had no more missions in the zone I told him to get a mission. He first ran towards the first contact not his current one but that was easily fixed. Then he said that I should come to the contact so that he could select a mission. I told him that it did not matter where I was that he could get new missions without me but he insisted so just to ease the slight swelling in my head I had been feeling since I teamed with this individual I agreed. Upon arriving at the contact he complained that he could not get a mission and promptly ran off barking 'COME' at me. As patient as I could be, I explained to him how contacts work. Surprised he was able to get this far with so little knowledge of the game. He returned to the contact but still could not figure out how to select the mission. Again he ran off barking 'COME'. As polite as I could I asked if I could offer a little advice. He said that I could so I said to him, without sounding rude or condecending 'You should read the instruction book and go through the jail break again and read everything that the people say to you. It will help you out alot and you will get so much more from the game if you know these things.'
To which he replied 'I know what I am doing a**hole now COME'
And at that I said goodbye and left the team.
At first I was truely upset at the ignorance and rudeness of the noob...yes at that moment I began to think of him as a noob. If you will notice I havnt used that term yet in this post but at that moment thats how I felt...'What a stupid ignorant noob'
On reflection, I now wonder who was the bigger noob...him for his lack of knowledge...
or me for staying with him as long as I did?

Re: great moments in n00bitry

Hi, Hiroshima. Welcome to your first thread on the site. From your story, it sounds like you took an honest interest in helping this guy out, and he was just too proud/ignorant to take the time to learn the game. It really reminds me of people that buy console games and don't read the instruction booklets. I always ask, "How are you going to know what to do?" The person usually responds with something like, "I'll just figure it out as I go." What this usually leads to is the gamer quickly tossing the game in disgust for how much it sucks when he/she could've read the instructions and truly enjoyed the experience. I commend you for taking the time to try to pass your knowledge on...Unfortunately, this just wasn't the right guy to help.

Re: great moments in n00bitry

My biggest noob mistake was not realizing that you could click on the "Exit" button until I was somewhere in the teens. My first team had all exited and I was running to the door, they said "exit dude." I replied "I'm trying, it takes a while to get back to the door." They were like "just click the 'Exit' button on the Nav Bar. I was like "oh...jackass..."

Also, my main is still only level 38 after nearly a year an a half of gaming...that could be noobish too...

Re: great moments in n00bitry

I've never been a newb! ok well I guess a long long time ago in CoH beta, I knew about combining enhancements but slotting was a foriegn concept. I didn't think that putting say two damage enhancements in the same power would add more damage, I thought each slot had to have its own unique enh. Oh well, now they force you to do that lol.

Re: great moments in n00bitry

NOOB...what is that???

Well, I can gladly say that I did not have many serious NOOB moments. When I started playing, my best friend spent hours with me teaching me the ropes and how things worked.

Now....I have teamed with people that were somewhat NOOBish in a sense. I've played with players that have reached the level to get a travel power and did not fully know how to work their travel powers. One person had fly and was doing fine, but every so often their health meter would always go from full to fully red and depleted. After this happened a couple of times, the entire team starts to ask, "why are you trying to commit suicide?....what are you doing?....are you in a fight?...do you need help?..." and the response to these questions were, "no, i'm fine...I was just landing". So...from there, we all are like..."what do you mean just landing, why are you killing yourself to land?" His response was, "well, the only way for me to stop flying is to drop the power and fall down...how are you guys landing without a near death experience?"

At this moment, after we all typed ROFLMAO...we kindly helped him on the flight etiquette of landing.

Re: great moments in n00bitry

Welcome hiroshima. Well after sometime in the game I still find out I am a newb at times. The biggest one I had was finding out I could have skipped the Hollows completely just by going back to the contact that sent me there in the first place.

Re: great moments in n00bitry

Hmmm, nothing major for me...

I teamed with a group once as their only serious firepower... A blaster was present, but it was literally his first day so he had no idea what he was doing.

At any rate, we had a door mish deep in the hollows and I had to explain the safe way for everyone to get there... I'm waiting and blaster eventually shows up. Anyway we've got a couple more minutes before the other folks from the team show up and we're sitting around talking. He sees a large group down the street and I can still remember his battle cry as he tore into them...

They're all RED...!

Sadly, I had to run into the group (orange for me...) to try to pull them away from his badly bleeding carcass and of course... I ended up in the hospital as well.

As I'm leaving, he's waiting at the door... "Dude, you should have helped me... They were all nearly dead."

I explained that they're being 'red' in his target window did NOT mean they were almost dead.

Wow, those are all some pretty funny stories. Mine's not nearly as funny, but I remember my first time trying to use the train in CoH. I couldn't get it to work and then I finally realized I was trying to go in the exit door!

Re: great moments in n00bitry

So many so little time.....my favorites are all part of the same experience - during this I found Gameamp.

#1 Keep in mind like most men - I install, play, read directions later if ever - I had been on for a week or so, leveled to 6 I think and got sent to Kings Row, the contact told me to report to someone in the Hollows that needed my help - I search every square inch of Kings Row looking for The Hollows - lots of neighborhoods including one with these find heroes in a group near a building, each looked different, some were sitting - one was on a fine box talking to the group (he had a TV for a head); Must be one of those Super Groups I thought, I ran over them clicked in the chat box “hi, do you know where the Hollows is???” the level 8 lost hit me so hard I slid for a while after I died, I persisted to flame him for a bit before I realized that he was a NPC (did I mention I am color blind?).

#2 Next day – yeah that was enough to make me log – fiddled with all those controls around the screen a bit – now I am an expert prepared to deal with the world full of villains ( I have targeting info ;-) – I used the Broadcast Channel – “does anyone know where the Hollows is?”…Broadcast: ”its on the east side of Atlas”….? No, surely a contact in their right mind wouldnt send me to another zone just to be sent to another one for a mission would they…(so niave); just then: Broadcast: ”wanna join our ream”; heck yeah! I responded, got my invite – again being an expert now I fired off “ OMW BRT” (on my way – be right there). I headed to the train station. Carefully steering around all the ‘groups of heroes’ I saw on the way – got to the train station, ran inside, and clicked on the door…nothing…. nothing…. door opened – somebody came out…. Still no menu…clicked again, Broadcast: ”where are you we are getting stomped and need a healer ASAP”… Still no menu – I typed, “train is broke – doors open but no menu and I can't go in”. Broadcast: ”you have to enter from the left”… sounds too easy but I slide over to the left, rotated right, clicked away defiantly…nothing, “Nope, I said – that ain’t it – tried both sides” … Broadcast: ”try re-logging – I had that trouble earlier “… excellent, surely that will do it I relogged, left and came back, errrrr – still nothing – decided to make a run for it – Skyway City was between me and Atlas but it sounds like a nice place (HA) I died twice getting through there and I was stealthy and running in the center of the street. Alas, I met my new teammates in Atlas… by the hospital, not the best place for first meetings. We had a big discussion about the whole thing – turns out there is an exit and an entrance at the train station…. "%$^$%" I fired off, I was too embarrassed to say much more –

Next day I searched the Internet for a community to help me and here I still am 5 months later……

Best one since then-

#3 Very short one – done this more than once it is so fine – I picked a big group of villains in the Hollows fired up all my buffs and inspirations, jumped in the center of the pile, clickity, clickity, clickity, fired off all my AoEs and attacks as fast as it would cue them up, waiting for them all to fall spasming to their death – HA HA!!!!, I’m dead? That last attack I clicked – it was rest…… this was not at all funny at the time, I was now collecting debt..

Thanks for all the help and fun- Del

My first noob action was when I found this cool blue/white person standing behind city hall. He could change my standing. Sounded cool! So I went for rugged. I have watched plenty of Dexter's Laboratory to know that you need to rugged to be a superhero. It took me a couple of days and many trips to the hospital before somebody explained it to me.

Re: great moments in n00bitry

My biggest noob was with my first character ever, the honorable Captain Icy-Hot.

I had been soloing for quite a while, and stumbled onto the hollows.

As I was standing there looking around, I got invited to team. I didn't know what to do, so I asked, "If I join the team, do I have to stay?" The person replied, "Do you want to join or not???" I declined.

It was later, while reading the instruction manual whilst on the crapper, that I saw that teams aren't permanent like I was afraid of.

Sheeeesh.....

I'm with you on that. My badge hound was like my fifth or sixth character, but I still didn't know know how to go about getting "Isolator" at the time. Found out a week later and really wanted to kick myself. I wish the devs would add some kind of "Breakdown Pass" or something to our characters once they ding 50. *sigh* probably never happen.

Re: great moments in n00bitry

ok i have a few, 1st off it took me a few missions to realise that you could click the exit bar.

enhancements, i thought 1st time round that having enhancements in your enhancement window, not your slots in the actual place where your supposed to put them was how they worked. so i was like ok i have 4 accuracy and some damage in there. lol i was like lvl 10 or more before the coin dropped and i was like ooooooooooh.

used to think that ++ing enhancements made them better than when you were the previous lvl and could not + them.

wanted to get fly so badly on my 1st hero and was so dissapointed when i realised i could not get it cos i didnt have any other powers from the pool. although this led to my love of tp.

thats about it. and mission the hollows yeah this is all good and well, but you should at least do the hollows once for frostfire which is still one of my fav missions in the whole game.

Re: great moments in n00bitry

I got my story.

Well heres the first part. I started out in Galaxy City(sigh)

I got introduced to my contact hoo gave me the talk to david wincott mish, and i had no idea where the hollows was.I learned that there was an entrance to it from skyway city, so i tryed taht and died twice. I went back to Atlas and felt really stupid when i pulled up my map and there was an entrance to the hollows.

After this i went to David Wincott and he gave me the kill 10 outcasts in cherry hills mish. So then i went to atlas and looked around the map, and could not see the entrance to cherry hills. So then i asked on broadcast "Where is cherry hills?"

(sigh) i was young and niave

Re: great moments in n00bitry

I have a story with the Hollows as well. Unfortunately, when I was given the mission in King's Row, I didn't know about this site. I also didn't realize that you could move your cursor over areas on the map and it would say what they were. So I ran around to the different entrances in King's Row and couldn't find the hollows. I went to Atlas Park and ran around to each of those entrances and couldn't find the Hollows. I decided to log and create another character. Well, sure enough I get sent to another contact and they want me to go to the hollows as well. Shoot!

Guess what...The Hollows was called Eastgate, before it became The Hollows. The sign at the gate in Atlas Park says Eastgate, not The Hollows. Ouch, it was my third character that descovered that little piece of information.

Level 38 at Positron in local chat- "I'm sorry but I don't know how to answer you in tells yet."

Private conversation with a Level 24 Tank- "I cant find any enchancements better than the ones I have... theyre all at 544 and red, the only other ones Ive seen are like 20 or 25..."

Random tell- "how do I save my game before I quit?"

Have they changed how this works in this last update though? I think I have dropped an enhancement on top of another one (was trying the % increase tabulations out and decided to see what would happen), and it popped up the combination screen automatically, filled with the old enh and the new one.

Re: great moments in n00bitry

Oh dear...I was afraid someone would eventually find out about this...

I suppose my most memorable noobish moment was when my first toon made it up to level 4 before I realized that you had to train up with Ms. Liberty. After the tutorial, I guess I missed the "you sould visit Ms. Liberty" part of the intro. Since Azuria showed up on my nav bar, I assumed she would train me...she wasn't that helpful, though.

After I finally did level up, I went off patrolling Atlas with my new-found sense of purpose (and powers) and came across a female toon surrounded by awful looking zombies. "Looks like she might need help," I thought, so I rushed to her aid. I guess the fact that the zombies weren't actually attacking her should have tipped me off, but alas into the fray I went. Imagine my suprise when one of the zombies somehow cast a spell that made oily, black tentacles sprout up around me, and they shot some kind of black energy at me which quickly made my health drop to zero. As I laid there defeated, I thought it was odd that the heroine I tried to help did absolutely nothing to help me...until I finally clicked on her again and realized that "Murk Eidolon" was not just a very unique hero name.
