This question is for those that have played either Lineage II, Guild Wars, or both.
I am considering the above games as an alternative to CoH. Not necessarily hanging up the cape, but I more of a anternative when I need a break from saving the denizens of Paragon City.
I know that GW has no online charges while LII does.
Can anyone speak as to the which of the two they prefer (if you've played both), or what your experience is/was like playing either?
How is the in-game community?
Teaming vs soloing (exist? necessary?)
Any feedback would be appreciated.
tia.

I am sure the folks over at guildwars.gameamp.com have plenty of advice to give. And I know couple of them have been on here too. As for Linage II, I have heard it is pure PVP. And a lot of people left the game because it was ruled by griefers and PK-ers. But since I haven't played either, I should probably keep quiet.
Probably both games have their pros and cons, but the game you should really check out is Dark and Light (see it atdarkandlight.gameamp.com)

*warning long post*
I've played both Lineage II and Guildwars, so I'll throw in my .02¢ However, since it is against Gameamps policy to talk negative about any of the games on the network I'll have to..'play nice' when I speak of L2.
~ Lineage 2 ~
Pros
+The graphics are by far the better than any game I have ever played. The textures, the character movement and attack animations, the landscape, its simply breathtaking.
Example
+There is never a lack of something to do. There are a TON of quests you can do solo or in a team. You can go hunt down a Raid boss (arch villian), fight others in the Arena (Coliseum), Clan wars, Castle sieges, The festival of darkness. This game has been around a long time and has plenty of content.
Cons
- Lineage II is an open PvP game. This means anywhere (except within towns) at any time you can be attacked. When I last played the level cap was 75, now when I say anyone I mean even if you are level 20, someone can come up out of nowhere and kill you in one hit. This is called PK'ing (player killing). It is the majority of what I experienced as 'open PvP'.
- Remember above when I stated there are a TON of quests? Well, while that is true what is lacking is a story line. There isnt one. There is a history on Lineage II however it is only found on the website. The missions are primarily 'kill x amount of certain mob' none of the backstory really shows up ingame.
- There are bots and farmers everywhere, on every server. They are who sell the gold on eBay and other websites. Find more about that here: Profiting off of MMO gold
- The game is balanced so players are reliant on their gear (weapons and armor). No player skill is really needed. The person with the best loot wins. Sadly this is what keeps the afore mentioned farmers in business.
- The community (ingame). Here's where I have to watch what I say. This is what ultimatly drove me away from the game. The players are flat out rude. There are little if any helpfull people to be found. Ask a question and instead of getting an answer youll find yourself being the victim of the 'n00bkiller'. Thats if anyone takes the time to answer at all.
The most experience you will find when comming into contact with other players is either a) they are about to PK you or b) running away in fear you might PK them. Joining a Clan (supergroup) will help to curbtail this however you would need to join a good clan with active members. For the most part you will find yourself solo alot untill you join a clan or someone to duo with on a regular basis.
All in all the community of L2 left a bitter taste in my mouth. From the constant Pk'ers to the scammers and griefers. It was just too overwhelming going from the happy almost over-friendly community of CoH to L2.
- The community (sites-forums). Not much of a shock to anyone Im sure, but here is a little taste of what to expect on the officials.
Once a staffer on the gameamp L2 site I can say there is little activity except for the occasional posts by people who play on free servers, which are against the ToS and cant be discussed on our site. Dont get me wrong though, its still the best place for game info, thats a given.
- Game (back end). The game is built on the Unreal engine which is one of the best. However the way the world was coded there are times and places where you will get lagged to the point of losing connection. Castle seiges, Raids, High traffic areas and towns. The servers struggle to keep up, but fail. There is little (if any) ingame moderation.
Summary
The Game is beautiful but the players are ugly. It feels more like work than a game. If you are easily aggrivated or not experienced in open PvP I would not recommend this game.
...........................................................
~ GuildWars ~
Pros
+ No Monthly charge. Thats the big one. Keep in mind though to stay in business they do charge for the expansions, but these are not required purchases.
+ Graphics are amaizing. Not as good as L2 but close and still very impressive. Example
+ There is a very cool storyline and you actualy advance more efficiently by doing quests and missions, as oppposed to just killing the same mobs over and over again. The Missions ...wait no that one in itself.
+ The Missions are like no other. The way the game is designed is just brilliant. The cities are a seperate zone, once you leave the city you spawn in Your own private mission map. Think of it like this, All of Paragon city is an instanced outdoor mission (only people who are on your team can enter) and places like Atlas plaza (not Park, just the section where City hall and Miss Liberty are) would be City zones, where you interact with the other players, buy sell, etc. Which aside from not being harrased by other players while you are doing a quest, this also means very little lag while fighting mobs.
+ The Community (ingame) is similar to what you would find in CoH (not near an expansion release). Loot is all but meaningless, PvP is consentual, your missions and zones are private, like I said so there is very little griefing. Which all add up to a friendly, helpfull playerbase. There are no official forums since there is no mothly fee. Yet again, Gameamp has it covered, and the site manager over there (Lani) is VERY VERY helpfull.
Cons
- Umm...
- Hmm...
- Oh yeah. The level cap is 20 and you can only have 4 total characters per account. Thats about it and that really doesnt bug me Its just the only complaint Ive heard about Guildwars.
Summary
Best $50 purchase ever.
*****You may also want to have a look at DnD online. Its still in Beta though.

Serioulsy the loot in this game is trivial. Gold, weapons, and armor are all trivial. Im not saying the game has no loot and people run around naked fighting with fists, its just GW is a skill based game not loot based. The weapons and armor only slightly enhances the player, unlike other games (WoW,L2,EQ) where the player is nothing without them.
Just trying to let ya know so your not dissapointed when needing a WTB/WTS fix.

I just was playing it some over the weekend and it was fun and what I love is that the loot is almost meaning less so I don't have to worry about getting teh uber gear I can just run around and blow stuff up with my elementalist for fun.

Its funny how one of the most desired items is black dye, which does nothing more than change the color of your armor.
@Warshadow-Shoot me a Pm if you want to get together in GW and set stuff ablaze. My main is an Ele also.

i'm going to try this post again, and hopefully after i get a full page typed i don't blow a fuse again (stupid electricity!)
I have played both L2 and GW (check out our L2 site and you may recognize the site mgr).... and honestly i would have to agree w/ Transmission on this one.... the graphics on L2 were breath-taking.... i was in awe when i 1st logged into the game... i used to spend hours running around looking at the scenery....but the community makes it totally unplayable to me.... b/c of the loot system you DEPEND on other players to get a lot of the stuff you need.... and the community is worse than any game i've ever played...
there would be lvl 75's camping the newbie towns.... yes camping lvl 1 characters just to kill them for the pure um... meanness? but when you first enter a game and are trying to learn how everything works, there is nothing more discourageing than being hunted down by a player who seems to take you down in one or two hits.....
but i do realize that there are some people who feel this gives more excitement to the game... if you are one of those people, then you should check out the screenshots on our site.....
and now on to GW.... i really, really like this game... i'm totally addicted to doing quests/missions and learning about the history of the game... and that is what GW is... and the fact that you don't HAVE to grind to gain levels and can even just do quests/missions to level is the greatest.....
i also really like the fact that you don't have to deal w/ steal killing, or random pking, or people picking up your loot. as a matter of fact when loot drops it is assigned to a person... only that person can pick it up, w/ the exception of gold, that is divided between the team automatically...
it is nice that you don't have to depend on the community for survival.... you can get by on your drops alone for gear...
and last (but not the end of the list) the henchmen... yep you get henchmen... if you want to solo but have quests that are a bit to difficult before you exit any town you can grab some henchmen.... you get to choose from a wide varity of types (from bait to healers) and depending on which city you go out from you get 6-8 members on your team... so you can have 7 henchies and yourself and go hunting....
of course GW is really the game i'm playing right now (when i actually get to play a game *sigh*) and i'm still a total noob, but i'm enjoying it a lot more than i enjoyed L2

i played guildwars before i payed Coh.
Always thought Coh was too expensive. etc
Well after i bought it i played it alot. Also because 2 of my cousins, my brother and my best friend are playing it.
That also kept the fun in the game.
You reach lvl 20 very fast (in my opinion) You only have 4 slots for characters so that also very sucks.
The quests are cool and there are many different quests. I love the story.
For me the bad part is: the lvl limit doesnt go up, if you reach lvl 20 and you played all the missions. there isnt much else to do. Though i played it over 170 hours i think its not that much. I already had 2 lvl 20's, a lvl 14 in about 4 months.
Btw, they are going to raise the lvl limit in the first half of 2006 <---- OMG!! that takes freakin long.
If the expansion was already out. i would have bought it. now i dont know if i will still play this game.

I also considered Guild Wars to have a break from CoH for a bit. I asked a mate who I knew had played it, and this is what he said:
*Not enough gameplay. It took him a month to get to level 20.
*Not enough character slots. There are only 4 slots yet 5 classes "Just to spite you".
Thats about all I got from him. He just summed it up with 'Don't bother'.

Oh my?
It doesn't take "no time" to get to level 20. Even if you do, the game has nothing to do about getting to level 20. I have played it for sometime over 7 months and I have played well over 1,000 hours (You can check in game :D). There is loads to do, 6 different proffesions, a massive map (Just look here, it also needed to be made bigger. There are in fact 3 different maps) and hundreds of skills to get, PvP to win, get fame, gain ranks and win Hall of Heroes. Loads of quests, missions to do, graphics are AWESOME and when Chapter 2 comes out there will be ANOTHER massive map, more character slots, 2 new proffesions, more skills, bigger maps, more PvP and PvE things in general etc.
For £0 a month, I think I know who's winning :)
Edit: I dont like typo's :)

Yay for Silly. I haven't played GW, so I can't say anything about the game. But I can say something about the GW community here at GameAmp. Their forums are as busy as COH/COV and they have a brilliant staff team. And I think what makes GW really awesome is a very active and supportive gameamp guild in-game. I know for sure you won't get bored with it if you link up with these guys. Anybody that is looking for something else, so definately pay a visit to guildwars.gameamp.com

So Silly, are you saying we should just wait until chapter 2 comes out before we buy the game? Because Chapter 2 will be an upgrade that you purchase at the store right?

No real need to wait. The original GW and Chapter 2 are two separate games. Bit like COH and COV. You can play one or the other or both. It is not an expansion. The reason you might want to wait for chapter 2 is because it is new, and therefore more busy with new players.

Sorry, I dont really come here much unless I feel like annoying TheJeni. >:).
Basically, it's better to buy both because you will have more to do and more things to be able to play with. Unlike CoV, information about Chapter 2 doesn't come out all at once so we dont know much about it. The information has been given bit by bit from Gaile Gray and The Frog. Buying 2 offers you more, which if you buy from play cost £36 for both (Which I think is really cheap for a MMORPG with such awesome graphics/gameplay). Which is also no monthly. So you gain alot for little. It's not like you HAVE to buy 2. Buying 1 is fine, you could buy the first chapter for now, play it, see how it is etc. then if you like it you can buy the 2nd one.
You might wanna read the Factions FAQ on the guildwars.gameamp.com site. It tells you basically everything we know about Factions (Chapter 2) so far.
And yeah, the GW Gameamp communtity is awesome :]
BTW, im trying to sell TheJeni if anyone wants to buy her?

Every game has it's mean players.
| QUOTE | | GOLD TAKES FOREVER TO EARN |
There are different ways of earning money. As you get through the game it's easier to earn. There is also a way to "farm". Which means you can kill out about 20 monsters at one time getting you items and money. click here for a video of it.
| QUOTE | | SO U ALWAYS HAVE SUCKY ARMOR |
Again I repeat what I said about money. Your basic armour sets are cheap. The better looking armour is 15K a piece. Then you have your 1,000,000 gold armour which most dream of :)
/jump
Press M. Then click on the place you want to travel to. In pre-searing the map is quite small so there arn't that many places to find, but when you go to post-searing the map is huge.
| QUOTE | | IN CITIES U CANT ATACK ANTHING |
I wouldn't like other players killing me when im trying to sell my stuff etc. They're outposts, towns etc. Your not meant to kill people and there are no monsters there because it's a place which is guarded so no monsters get it. This is why you have to go outside.
| QUOTE | | OH YEA CHARACTER CREATION SUCKS, TONZ OF TWINS AROUND!!!!!!!!!!HORRIBLE |
Since Saturday, it was improved so more options were avalible. Twins are fun though! :] Never found mine though :(
One more thing, there are LOADS of Videos, even two guilds dedicated to making movies. Check out our videos section.

I have to say that dispite my friends advice I might pick the game up anyway. With no subscription fees I don't think I have much to lose. My only concern with it would be gear. In CoH/CoV the chances of you find anyone with anywhere near the same costume as you is very very low. However, from what I have seen of GW, every has the same armour. I admit I wouldn't like a game where it is completely gear based (e.g, the person with the best sword will always win) but I would like for it to have some flexability (other than the colour, of course).

Well I for one took to Guild Wars like a duck to water. It's simply great. You don't need massive amounts of characters to play once you start, time simply flies past.
Hobs - once you get it gimme a holler, my toons are listed in my sig, I dont mind teaming sometimes. I love it... but Im back on CoH instead of CoV....
OK Im off for the night. NEed sleep for tomorrow, althought I'll probably wind up on CoH later.
