As a Ranger/El is have serious trouble findig a good combo for various missions.
The only good one I came up with was 'Pin Down' and 'Poison Arrow' Does a Ranger really have to be defendsless?

On the contrary! Rangers have a lot of defense! Whirling defense is a good one to have. When going against a group of bunched up casters, choking gas works as well.
Have you ever tried the double shot, kindle arrows, conjure flame combo? :)

Rangers are far from defenseless! They are quite possibly the most versatile profession in the game. Are you strictly talking about your ability to do damage? If so...
If you're a R/E try one of these:
Basic Ranger Nuking w/ Short Bow (for firing rate):
Ignite Arrows + Dual Shot
Ignite Arrows + Lightning Reflexes
Basic Ranger Straight-Damage:
Kindle Arrows + Conjure Flame + Dual Shot
Kindle Arrows + Conjure Flame + Lightning Reflexes
Don't want to do fire damage? Throw down Winter and switch to cold.
Those are just 2 of the most common damage combos. There are plenty of others.

Whirling Defence (never leave home without it)
Darn good combo for when things get real rough is Whirling Defence then Troll Urgent, wouldnt want our healing interupted now ;)
As my R/Mes normally acts like secondary defence for casters this combo I cant live without. 15sec of being like a tank comes in handy alot!

Bringing whirling defence is great. I'ts great to see the warriors tire of missing you with every hit and move on to your team's ele or something.
Melandru's arrows and penetrating attack can do massive damage to just about anyone with an enchantment on them. (MONKS)
Try it out.

Dryder's defenses is another good one in my opinion. Also, take the time to go cap Ward Against Harm.
