| PLEASE HELP ME...Error Decompressing Data message |
|
|
|
I recently bought COV and have already tried to install the game 5 times. Everything goes smoothly until the end of the 3rd cd. Im not exactly sure what file is stops on, it has a .pgg extension(i didnt write it down) but, this message pops up everytime...
Error decompressing data! Corrupted installer?
I tried looking it up on this forum and couldn't find it and also tried looking it up on google...maybe im blind or something. Could someone please help me with this, I have been waiting a long time to play this game and I would hate to not be able to play it because I couldnt install it.
P.S.- I can try installing it again and write down the file name if that helps any.

First off welcome to the site!
I'm not tech expert but it sounds like a problem on the disc. I know it sounds silly but if you still have the receipt for the game perhaps you could take it back to the store and explain that it's not loading on your machine and ask if they would be kind enough to exchange it so you can try again with a new copy.
If you have the same problem then thats one for the devs to answer or someone more tech minded.
If you can write down the message and what hte prob is mebbe someone can have a go at helping, other than that try the exchange idea!
Hope it works out and that you get to play real soon

I agree it sounds like a disk problem. What you could do is downloading the whole game. It is 1.6 GB, so it will take a couple of hours at best, but you do have it then :)
Click here to get to the instruction page to download the whole thing.

See the thing is I got it off of eBay and im not sure that I can send it back. I emailed the seller telling him that it didnt work and that ill try to find out why. Im thinking that its my CD-ROM because during those 5 times I tried to install it kept on saying that I needed to insert the CD when it was already in the drive and always seemed to stop at that part 93% into the 3rd CD download. The filename that it stops on is:
texVWorldBase2.pigg
Once it gets to this point it keeps on running until this pops up on the screen:
Error decompressing data! Corrupted Installer?
Could someone please help me

I'm almost afraid to ask but it is a genuine copy of the game and not someone who's sold u either a duff copy knowing it don't work or a ripped copy and copy protection has kicked in?
If it's not working surely there is something you can do? I'm not familiar with how the whole ebay thing works so Im not gonna be much help. Hopefully the advice to d/l the game might help ya.

Browse out to the C:\Program Files\City of Villains folder and look for a file called COVUpdater.EXE. Launch it. That should start the online download of the rest of the client. On the plus side, it should only need to download what it doesn't have already installed. You should also make a shortcut to that file and put it on your desktop. That's what you will use to launch the game.

Welcome U...and just to let you know, I had the same exact problem with my 3rd disk. I think that when they sent out the cd's a batch of them were written incorrectly.

If you're having fun, it doesn't matter what level you're at. :)
Actually, that's not bad at all, though.

I've been asking around in the game about the problem, and it seems that a lot of people have run into the same problem when installing with the discs. Apparantly one of the first shipments had a bad batch of 3rd Discs, because they (the people that had problems with the discs) all ran into the problem on Disc #3. Maybe Cryptic/NC Soft will send a recall? I DLd the game through the patch, so it didn't affect me. Hopefully they'll recall the defective discs and we can get good ones (in case my machine craps out, which I'm sure it'll do one day).

Windex is the answer to all life's problems. . .
I was tempted to break into song, but refrained from doing so for whats left of my sanity and, maybe, also for yours. This is of course provided you still have some shred of it. I know some of you out there have long passed over, but those who haven't might want to stay that way at least for the time being.

Thats, odd, I got the Good vs Evil edition, and had NO problems, it installed in about 1-2 hrs, and I was playing shortly after.
A recommendation to anyone that will/might buy the game, get the Good vs Evil edition, it has both games, and downloads much faster then the other ones. (I remember my old CoH disk, the one I forgot the account too........)

Ok just so you know the files will say CoH even though you have City of Villains that is normal. And believe it or not the updater is the same for both too. now what is happening when you insert your discs you are getting an error? I am not the most technical staffer here so I will poke one of them to take a look here and see if they can offer you some more help.

Hello All!
I was having a similar problem on disk 2 of a "bargain bin" copy of City of Villians I picked up. I did the COVUpdater.EXE thing, left it on overnight (my satellite ISP is wacky, so I knew it would take a while). When I woke up in the morning, it had a Run or Start or something button. Happy, I pressed it, and got a log-in screen. Yay!
I had some other stuff to do, so I got out of that and did my running around. Now I come back, run COVUpdater.EXE, and I don't get the start or run button or whatever. It just says:
Connecting: #14..
(It started off saying #1, and just goes up every once in a while).
Does that mean I have the game downloaded, but am having problems connecting to a server? I know my satellite ISP makes some applications un-reliable (XPlornet, btw) so I'm not sure if it's just a problem connecting or am I doing something else wrong? I'm not overly computer literate.
Any help or ideas?
Thanks! Can't wait to get into the city and smash those do-gooders!

Un-Welcome to CoV Gameamp Wolf touched (thats our way or saying hello we are villains remember). It might be your connection sometimes when there is heavy volume it takes a while to log in I am not the most technical staffer but I am sure someone else will have a better answer than me are you playing on the US. or the Euro version? It could also be that they are doing the maintenance when you tried to log on that could cause the problem you were describing.

My Solution
It's down a few posts, but it should work provided you have CoH included in your account. If you don't you won't be able to use that and will have to wait for connectivity to improve. It'll fix itself in time, but this will let you play right away as long as you meet the requirements.

Okay, so thank you all very much!
Good news - updater worked!
Bad news - it seemed to install CoH, rather than CoV (at least, that's what the title screen says)
I didn't notice it was CoH (or rather, thought it was normal) at first. I went to www.plaync.com and signed up a CoV account, with the serial # from my CoV box and I gave a credit card. It kept saying I could not log in (EDIT: could not log into the game, not the account web site). So I started a second account there with the CoH Trial serial # from my CoV box set. I was able to log in there (ie the game, to play CoH)! I cancelled my CoV account.
I've been playing CoH for a couple of weeks. Very fun! Now I'd like to try CoV. I check the CoH folder, thinking maybe I had used the CoH updater rather than the CoV updater... I didn't. The CoV updater is what I linked to on my desktop (or rather, quick launch area of my menu bar), and it's what I launch every time I play the game.
Now I'm wondering... maybe I should use the CoH updater to download CoV?!? Should I actually get a different log in screen when I first start the game up, depending on which one I use? I CAN have both installed, can't I?
Thanks a lot for the help, everyone... or... un-thanks?!?

Just look at it this way....if you're in a restuarant and need to use the restroom. A lot of places have you walk through a SINGLE door before you select your Men/Women option. The same with CoX. You use the same platform for both games. Once you're on the platform, you then choose which game you want Villains/Heroes.
If you already had a CoH account, then all you need to do is upgrade that current account with the CoV code, and you instantly get access to both games for 1 monthly fee.
If you ADD CoV, then you've literally made yourself pay $30 a month for something you could have gotten for just $15 a month.
Yes, since CoH is the flagship game, that's what your updater is going to model and the loading screen as well. However, once you get to the character creator, that's where the fork in the road begins. You can choose either Villain or Hero and then that'll take you to the game of your choice.

Okay, so when I log in to PlayNC, I use WolfTouched.
Under game accounts, there are two listed.
WolfTouched is the one I entered the CoV serial code on.
When I couldn't log into that (it was supposed to come with a month free), I did a second one.
FundyPagan is the one I entered the CoH 2 week trial serial # on.
I tried to log in as WolfTouched, it didn't work. I logged in as FundyPagan, it did work (as CoH) so I cancelled WolfTouched (it's still on my WolfTouched log-in, you understand... there is WolfTouched the log-in, and WolfTouched the account).
So, should I only have one? When I get my pre-paid game card (decided to not put my credit card back on), should I re-activate WolfTouched (the one with the actual game serial#) and put it there? What will that give me access to?
I'm afraid I've made a mess of all this. Thank you very much for your help.
EDIT: I've never actually purchased CoH... just used the updater, and the two weeks free. Will I still have access to CoH after my free two weeks? How do you choose which to play, CoH or CoV... does it depend on the log in - like I need seperate log ins for both?

Sounds like you created 2 seperate accounts. If you contact Customer Service, they could probably walk you through combining the accounts into 1, that way you're enjoying both games for the 1 $15 monthly fee.
You should only have 1 set of login info for both games. When you look at your account info, there should only be one account and there is where you should have UPDATED and not ADD. If you ADD, then you set up a seperate account for CoV..If you UPDATE, then you combined the 2 accounts and can play either or with the same login info.
