I went to see Rent last night with the ex-roommate and his mom (they came down from Tampa for Turkey Day). I hadn't see the Broadway play, so I went into it having only heard some of the music through friends and such.
I really enjoyed it. I'm usually not a huge fan of musicals, but the music in this movie/play is really good. Kind of like "showtune rock".
The story was excellent, although extremely depressing. It's about a group of friends trying to survive in New York City. There's a lot of laughs and cries. Quite a bit of "feeling good" and some "feeling bad". Some of it really made me look at how I've spoken to and treated people in the past.
I really enjoyed the movie and would recommend it to anyone who likes the Broadway feel.

The weirdest thing to me about Rent was the fact that, yes it is depressing, but if you watch the ads, it looks like the happiest musical ever produced. Leaving out the one shot in the cemetary, they take lots of shots way out of context to make it look all cheery. That threw me off when I saw the ad.
