Magic The Gathering

Alright, so right now I'm going through a MTG phase again. I've been playing since I was in 5th grade. I stopped playing and became a collector in my Sophomore year in High School because some ass who I thought was a friend, more than half of my cards before he transfered schools. Great! :D

I am wondering if any you still play? I'm an old school magic player, meaning that I have been collecting cards since Alpha, Homeworlds, Ice Age, Stronghold, etc! omg!

Currently I have my old Green Stomp Deck, and trying to rebuild a Sliver Deck and my old Wall deck.

:D

Anyone...else who's a geek like me? ;)

Re: Magic The Gathering

ALthough I'm not really a collector, I love playing the game now and then. Currently I have an untested burn deck, mainly Tempest block with some Masques block and later cards... MTG is one of the most fun games I've played... Almost as much fun as Mage Knight Version 1 was. Then they came out with MKv2 and that was stupid because all the old ones became obsolete... Oh well, Magic is still fun!

Re: Magic The Gathering

It is funny you shoudl mention M:TG. I think that game had a strong influence on the GW skills. There is a counter or combo for nearly everything in both games.

Hopefully A-Net won't keep raising the ante the way that Wizard of the Ghost did. I think that WOtC pretty much ruined Magic with their greed. More and more sets coming out faster and faster that keep making every previous set obsolete so you have to keep buying cards. I refused to buy any more when Tempest was released and it was quite obvious that they were now only after the money. Such a fantastically great game up until then, though. Not 100% original, but certainly the most "different" thing at the time it was released. What a shame they went and f'ed it all up.

A-NET, are you listening? I know some of you play(ed) Magic, DO NOT REPEAT THEIR MISTAKES!

Re: Magic The Gathering

Magic. I strated when back in like 4th or 5th grade a friend of mine gave me my first starter deck, from mirage. He then promptly traded me 3 commons for all the good rares...

So me and my friends would have our own little magic noght once a week, yada yada yada...flash foward a couple of years and I started playing in tournaments, you know "Friday night magic" Well, I can't say I was the best, but it was not uncommon for me to come in second, and there was noone at the store that had never been beaten by me (except for some kid with a deck more exspensive than my car, but I had to litteraly play the game for him, so he doesn't count)

Unfortunatly, the store changed owners and soon every friday was a draft tournament. Draft is actually my best format, but paying 12 bucks a week for a bunch of cards I probably won't put to much use...every week...i stopped going much. An occasional pre release here and there, but that was about it. I finnaly stopped just before the current kurwaga(sp?) Block.

There are no local tournaments for me to hit up anymore, but I have noticed some kids at my college play magic, and one of my friends has even been going crazy showing me his old decks, then I heard they are releasing "Coldsnap" the set that was supposed to be part of the Ice age block, but got replaced by homelands..bleh

So I figure it is time to dust off my decks and start again. definetly gonna hit that pre-release for cold snap.

Re: Magic The Gathering

I'll probable get some negative responses, but it's how I feel.

I played MtG HEAVILY during the Tempest Cycle through the Ursa's Saga Cycle. Loved the 'Sneak Attack' deck I made. I even played some Type II during those times as well.

The cycle right after that (can't remember name) with the new 'lobotomy' cards really left a very sour taste for me. Also, during those days, a good friend of mine had introduced me to SWCCG by Decipher. I thought MtG was good, my opinion is SWCCG is loads better. Higher learning curve, no single 'power' card. Better balance overall.

I was also dissapointed with what WoTC did to their aquisitions (or what not) like the D&D franchise and the new Star Wars license through Hasbro. It seemed once they owned it, it went down the tubes. Plus I also absolutely detested what they did during the Pokemon craze. Saw first-hand how they treated their own distributors and retailers.

Every wonder why the card shops started closing in the Seattle Metro area? Hmmm. It is no wonder that Hasbro took over.

Just my experience.

ok, magic has had its crap sets, like homelands...or perhaps urza's saga, legacy, and destiny..that was a little weak. But tempest? Shadow and slivers, the coolest things about magic came out in that block. The only complaint i ever had about tempest was that I felkt the art was a little bland, but I thought up unill about onslaught, all the art was a bit bleh compared to mirage.

let me summarize my rant Tempest=uber.

Unless you are referring to the type 2 tournaments were set roatated into and out of legality, magic cards never became obsolete. There would always be more cards, but my white wenine deck from hell, or my invincible cleric deck would always stand a good chance of winning, no matter what the released.

speaking of rotating cards out of use...anet isn't going to take away your skills. sure someone who buys the exspansion may have access to mopre skills, but that doesnt' mean you can't still win. It just comes down to how good you are. For all we know, the new exspansion might see us using some crappy skills we nver thought of using before to combat the new ones.

Re: Magic The Gathering

Wow! :D Good posts!

Pokemon came out when I was in 7th grade. And that caused CHAOS at my middle school. Kids were stealing each other's cards, people were fighting over that, at the same time we were going over through a marble craze. Yes. Marbles. :D I have more than 5k in a chest somewhere...I even got those marbles that are big as your average pumpkin. :D

When I started collecting was the same time Yu-gi-oh cards started coming out. I just had to shake my head and frown.

I like that idea of GW Skills being adapted from MTG. Wouldn't be surprised. :p

Don't worry Binary, no negative responses. Don't know why there would be. :)

I used to have a Shadow deck. Personally, I think that Tempest was the best...series(?) of cards? Only because it was more straight forward, in my opinion. No such thing as kicker cost, or threshold... I think some did have some Phasing, oh wait... Buy back... that is just too cheap. :(

Re: Magic The Gathering

Back in grade 5-7, i was playing magic ALOT. I went 2 tournaments a week and kept on winning. My token/elf/beast deck seems like a very odd deck, but i always led victorious. First, i get out my mana fast and produce my elves fast. I had 4 Elvish Pipers and played out my beasts really fast. Also putting out my Elvish Channelers, i create many Wurm Tokens with Crush of Worms, and also have many, many 1/1 insect tokens with my Elvish Hivemaster. From this, i have over 200 tokens mixed with many 6/6 and 1/1. After this, this card (forgot name) that had an effect of creating a 1/1 insect token for each forest (mana) you have and put it back into your library. From having lots and lots of tokens, i use parellel evolution, thus doubles the number of my tokens. This card has flashback, so i use it again. After, i rush them so badly and then use my Tribal Unity, giving my worms or elves or insects a +*/* which kills them. I also had 3 more parellel evolutions and 4 Wellwishers (Extremely cheap elves that gain 1 life for each elf in play.) I played for keeps for almost forever at my school and on the street and made my deck amazing. Soon, in my Gr.8 year, my deck was stolen. I was really sad, but it was okay because i was getting old of magic. It was my mini legacy of magic. Just telling you guys how everyone probably used to play magic. Little token of appreciation. :P (wow i kept typing and typing and didn't realize i typed alot) Peace out dawgs.

Re: Magic The Gathering

...and it was quite obvious they were just after the money.

I stick by that statement. I liked a lot of the Tempest cards too, but then they introduced skills like Flanking, which basically was like a super-cheap, pain-free, one-shot Pestilence. So much for any weenie deck. I had the all-time fastest white/green weenie deck, but that one little Flanking skill ruined every creature with toughness of 1 in any deck anywhere. It is like first strike that happens before combat even starts, and the creatures that had it were cheeper than a lot of the standard weenies. All Flanking did was obsolete thousands of older weenie creature cards. It is a really stupid ability that was NOT thought out in terms of balance and game play, the only thinking was what it would add to the bottom line.

Another horrible idea: "Shadow". Basically, if you put together a deck that is half Shadow creatures, they are just like creatures that have landwalk for every land type. They cannot be blocked by ANYTHING if you don't build a deck with shadow creatures or put a ton of PD in your deck just in case you meet a Shadow creature. You opponent pulls out a couple of 3 Power Shadow creatures and it is all over. That's just WRONG, and ill-conceived. The ability is just too powerful and easy to abuse, and of course they made them all dirt cheap to cast.

I still contend that the new business model of adding one new ability for every new set released was nothing more than a money grab, thinly-veiled as "improvements". Game Balance went out the window. Sure there are still good, effective older cards, but they have upped the ante with every new set, and the have made thousands of old cards obsolete with the new ones, and they now do this on a continual basis. I didn't quit because my old cards now sucked (I have four of each Dual Land still), I quit in protest of their GREED.

I agree. Cursed Scrolls anyone, hehe. Plus the painlands, ensnaring bridge (I think) and quite a few others. Buyback burn cards, ouch! Wasn't this the cycle that had the mox diamonds as well? The sneak attack deck I had revolved around the sneak enchantment, mox diamond, city of brass, dark ritual, lotus petals=mana of any color. Oh and "Fling"-loved that card, common too-if I remember correctly.:)

Wow, it's been over 5 years since I played. I just found SWCCG more gratifying in the end.

Re: Magic The Gathering

Wow most of you seems to have started Magic long ago... I started pretty recently since all my friends played it. I started playing during the Mirodin block but i didn't liked it since all decent Mirodin decks are really artifact heavy decks.

I made a Onslaught (the block before it) deck instend and quite liked it. Then came Kamigawa wich i didn't liked much cause there were soo many legends in there it wasn't funny.

The curent block, Ravnica i really like however. It's a multi-color block that has a "guild" mecanic :P Each guilds are a group of cards that have the same 2 colors and every guild got their unique ability too. 4 guilds are already released in Ravnica and the 6 other will be released in the next 2 sets.

I got a Golgari deck, that's the green-black guild and it's really reanimation heavy.

Edit: typos

Re: Magic The Gathering

Never tried SWCCG. Maybe I should just see what it's like.

And claw, I REALLY suggest trying to find cards from Exodus and below. I believe you might a lot of forgotten cards that could be quite useful. I HATE the newer cards. I've been playing against Emperor Decks, Legend Decks, ARTIFACT Decks, but none of them have the originality, and the flexibility of the older cards.

And besides. If you know about the old school Shades, the ones that add +1+1, you'll notice it doesn't say 'until end of turn.' :)

Yeah, technically the old Shades fot +1/+1 forever, but they did put out errata that says that it should be until end of turn... Of course, errata is stupid. If they wanted it to be until end of turn, they shoulda frickin' put it on the card in the first place!

...I loved having a nice 168/169 Frozen Shade a couple times... That was fun.

Edit: Not quite as fun as the Serra Avatar with Spirit Linkx4 and Armadillo Cloak x4 though... Every time it hits something, you gain 8x your current life+8! Wee!

Exodus? That's too old, can't get any of those where i live or if i can, they are really overpriced. Besides i really like the Guild set going on right now.

I went to a couple of forums and many ppl said they really dislike the artifact block (Mirodin) and the legend block (Kamigawa) and a couple of blocks before that but this one made them come back.

You should check it out and tell me what you think while i'll check if i can get information about your old ones lol

Re: Magic The Gathering

The Serra Avatar wasn't quite as bad as the later ones... It just had power and toughness equal to your life, but then people around me started enchanting it with Spirit Link so whenever it did damage, you would gain that much life...

Armadillo Cloak does the same thing as Spirit Link, but also gives +2/+2 and Trample. Basically with 4 of both enchants on a Serra Avatar, you attack someone, kill at least all their creatures if not them, and then become all but immortal because you just gained a minimum of 72 life (power 9 for Avatar from 4xCloaks +1 life for you, then all that x8) and you just had an Avatar who's power went up from 9 minimum to 81... Yeah, I guess Serra Avatar IS as bad as the later ones.

Re: Magic The Gathering

Ahh, the Serra Avatar.

The way I used (abused) this card was sacrificing it to the graveyard. Oops, it has to be reshuffled back into the library. Unless you smite/spite (?) you had to recycle the card back FROM the graveyard. Kept sacking it to the green enchantment that lets you sack (cant remember name), then draw card equal to power/toughness but sac 3 of those. Was a great complement to my sneak attack.

If done correctly, I could really go through my library by the 3rd or 4th turn.

Now, just too many broken cards.

@Mann,
yes, give SWCCG a shot (not WoTC'w SWTCG-it stinks). The cards are a bit cheaper now. LOL-have 12 5k count boxes and over 40 800count ctns of the stuff. Even have 6 decks (light and dark) still built. My son and I had hours of fun. Now we GW, still FUN!

/cheers

Re: Magic The Gathering

*sigh* where to start.

I started playing around 6th ED. I still play a lot. I attend regional championships and pro tour qualifier tournaments when i have the money. For those of you who don't know much about competative magic, the pro tour has been around for somewhere around 10 years. The guy who has won the most money to date has been on the pro tour for 8 years and has made around $350,000. WoTC gives away 1 million dollars a year in prize money alone as tournament prizes for the pro tour, plus a lot of other stuff. If any of you care, they have just started a hall of fame, with some pretty important people in magic history being inducted. If it sounds dumb to you, there actually a lot too it and it isn't some tiny thing done for novelty. Here's a link to the webpage.
http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=mtgevent/hof/welcome
For the record the guy i mentioned earlier is not eligible for another couple of years, so he isn't on the page.

Most of the negative stuff a lot of you have said i understand where you are comming from, but could argue against it easily. However this isn't really the place for that so i won't. If anyone want to know more about it i would be happy to enlighten.

I would like to point out the problem with shadows were that they they also couldnt block other creatures without shadow.

As far as this statement:
QUOTE
ok, magic has had its crap sets, like homelands...or perhaps urza's saga, legacy, and destiny..that was a little weak.

The timeframe at which Urza's saga first became legal in competative magic is known as combo winter. The reason? A competative deck more or less had to win on turn 1 or 2 using one of the various broken combos in the set, or it would lose. Urza's block is reguarded as a 'mistake' my wizards R&D because of the obscene power lvl and amount of cards they were forced to ban. As an aside i can understand how you thought it was weak, i did too until i got into competative magic and learned more of the history and understood it.

Anyway i didn't mean to rant. M:TG is one of my greatest joys in life. If i came off as arrogant or insulting i apologize, i just like people to understand things and have the full information. Again if anyone wants to talk further in depth about it I would be happy to.

Re: Magic The Gathering

I have spent only $25 on magic cards total. From that, I was able to trade cards back and forth until I had at least every single card from Alpha to Exodus. That was until it was stolen. :p So now I'm down to a box filled with cards that just can't be put together and played, a binder with rares and good cards that could be sold for about 10-100 dollars a piece, and sitting on two decks, a green stomp one and a sliver one.

The only times I ever used shadows was like, in 6th grade when everyone else was using them.

I miss my Wall Deck and my sleep deck.

I dislike all counter decks. :p

The reason why I hate being in tournaments is because I hate the limitations. Around me, can only use cards from certain editions, already broken/banned cards, etc. I only play in tournaments organized by friends and people who I know. Besides, it's a bit of a less-serious more fun environment.

I can't use my Sliver deck in any tournament is because that I also use Gaea's Cradle. :)

I've been thinking... Mann you seem to have completely stoped playing after Exodus, did you knew that they printed new slivers in a relatively recent set? Just curious since you seem to really like them lol, been mentionning them a few times already...

Slivers have been printed in Tempest and Legion except for the Sliver Queen and the Sliver Overlord wich are in different sets.

No, I stopped collecting majorly after Exodus. Yes, I am well aware of the new Slivers, and I have some in my posession. :)

The Sliver Queen is from Stronghold while the Sliver Overlord is from... I think it was called Scourge.

Starting after Urza's Saga is when the major broken cards came noticed. Like that Yagmoth. :p I just loved almost every card from Exodus and below :) Don't know why. Urza's was pretty cool. When I saw people playing it at my High School, I was like "wtf is arcadia's mask?" "What's a jakolhops or whatever you call it? Avatars? What?" The new cards just seemed to easy to.. hmm... utilize? Or counter? *shrugs*

I believe all the new cards after Judgement (Maybe?) were made to stop people from making stomp decks and counter decks, as they got really annoying. But wasn't that the point? :) Oh, and to stop a close friends Squirrel deck, as you can get more than 1 billion 1/1 squirrels in a matter of just 4-5 turns. Yes. I am not overgerrating about it. :p Seriously, over 1 billion squirrels.

If you noticed, card types have changed as well to make it a bit easier to understand now. There was an assassin card from... Homelands I believe, which is now classified as a human assassin in one of the newer editions. And change in the demon thing, etc. etc.

Re: Magic The Gathering

We have mall that no one goes to, too. :p But they don't have a basement. Just card shop that kicked me and my other two friends out just because they *thought* we said the word "steal."
