Thank you for welcoming me:), Well, because the topic is "what is your name in elvish", it's not so hard to know what I meant with "gift of god". The search of my name was just a matter of time(or he knows all names by heart, which would be kinda cool and sick^^) Merry christmas all btw!!

RE: What is your name in Elvish?

LOL... I have a nephew named Matthew, so I was already aware of its interpretation; and yes, I am a student of the Queyna language, albeit a very lazy one. I can kinda read it on a very rudimentary level. Almost like the Dick and Jane books. See spot run... that kinda stuff. Yeah... not quite ubergeek, but I'm headed there if I don't change my ways.

As for you Jen, you've really stepped in it now. From this moment on, I dub thee Lady Nimthîriel. That will be your name on the LotRO site henceforth. =)

Here's another ubergeeky thing that you all may or may not find interesting: The name Salmar comes from the Silmarillion, and was first used by one of the Maiar after the world of Arda was first forged. He was the ever devoted servant of a Vala named Ulmo who was the Lord of the Water. Salmar forged Ulmo's great horns which were "wrought of white shell; and those to whom its music is heard, will have the music in their hearts ever after; and the longing of the sea will never leave them."

It is this longing that welled up inside Legolas in the fourth age after the One Ring was destroyed. The music haunted his heart for years and years until finally, after a long long while, he gave into his heart and sailed west unto the undying lands; taking his eternal friend, Gimli, with him.

Wow... I just realized what a Tolkien nerd I really am. Cheers. =)

Hey, there Silly Ranger... What don't you like about it? I think that Lithônion is a strong Elvish name. Don't forget a lot of bows were made from ash. That's kinda cool, cause you being a ranger and all makes it fit nicely =)

Dontcha think?

I can handle being called Lady Nimthîriel. Any idea how you would pronounce that. Yes I'm asking for a phonetic spelling.

RE: What is your name in Elvish?

I guess I will share on how to be like me (This is based on something around Guild Wars):

1) You must draw.

2) Wonder why, how and what the heck made you draw it.

*ADDED BONUS*

Animate it:

Once you finished doing them, you must realise that reading/doing all this wont make you like it. It will just show your god damn crazy.

This piece, I'm pretty sure is in the appendices in the back of the Return of the King book. It's been a long time since I read it, so I'm not sure exactly where. I'm sure if you look hard enough, you'll find it. However, it's not in story form... like Dragnet, the appendices are mosly "just the facts, ma'am". Can be kinda boring if you're not necessarily a Tolkien nut like me =P

RE: What is your name in Elvish?

My names would end up being:
Eredhion (lit. "seeder") (Air-eh-thee-on)
Aphaderuiondur (Ah-fahd-air-oo-ee-on-dur)

I'll go with Eredhion I think as the whole lot is a bit of a mouthfull and my second name I hardly use in real life either :-)

Question for Meldarion:
Unfortunately my LoTR knowledge is passive. I recognize your bit on Salmar and Legolas. But I couldn't have produced it myself :-) This put me in mind of something I read once, which was basically a synopsis of the time spent by the surviving members of the Fellowship in Gondor while waiting for Arwen to show up. Part of it was the background story of the Five and how Gandalf/ Mithrandir's name was really Olorin, and he in fact a Maia. Now the question is, where did I read it? It's not in the appendici of Return of the King nor I believe in the Silmarillion. I've never read the Tales of Middle Earth series, but I think I read "Letter by/of Tolkien" which may have been the source of that particular bit of lore. Do you have any idea's about that?
Reason I ask is that I'd like to read that particular source again. It contained many tidbits that wove things together concerning the age of men.

PS. Don't mention Yakslapping on the GW site, or Apoletta the Black, meteor dodging Yak will either stomp on you or regurgitate some alfalfa in your general direction :-)

You are obviously referring to the big old library with the thousands of books and rickety, squeeky sliding ladder in your mansion now. Right? You wouldn't want to imply you don't own The Three Books yourself and have to go to a public library for them on a site filled with LotR nerds :-)

From what I know, Tolkien discussed these facts about Gandalf in the book Unfinished Tales. There's a couple of notes from J.R.R. Tolkien within it's pages where he speaks of the Istari (Gandalf's order). Here are a couple of clips... let me know if this helps you:

QUOTE

from Unfinished Tales

We must assume that they [the Istari] were all Maiar, that is persons of the 'angelic' order, though not necessarily of the same rank. The Maiar were 'spirits', but capable of self-incarnation, and could take 'humane' (especially Elvish) forms... Now these Maiar were sent by the Valar at a crucial moment in the history of Middle Earth to enhance the resistance of the Elves of the West, waning in power, and the Men of the West, greatly outnumbered by those of the East and South. It may be seen that they were free each to do what they could in this mission; that they were not commanded or supposed to act together... and that each had different powers and... were chosen by the Valar with this in mind.

also:

It was believed by many of the 'Faithful' that 'Gandalf' was the last appearance of Manwë himself... But I think it was not so... To the overthrow of Morgoth he sent his herald Eonwë. To the defeat of Sauron would he not then send some lesser (but mighty) spirit of the angelic people, one coeval and equal, doubtless, with Sauron in their beginnings, but not more? Olórin was his name. But of Olórin we shall never know more than he revealed in Gandalf.

and then:

It was resolved to send out three emissaries to Middle-earth. 'Who would go? For they must be mighty, peers of Sauron, but must forgo might, and clothe themselves in flesh so as to treat on equality and win the trust of Elves and Men. But this would imperil them, dimming their wisdom and knowledge, and confusing them with fears, cares, and weariness coming from the flesh.' But two only came forward: Curumo, who was chosen by Aulë, and Alatar, who was sent by Oromë. Then Manwë asked, where was Olórin? And Olórin... asked what Manwë would have of him. Manwë replied that he wished Olórin to go as the third messenger to Middle-earth... But Olórin replied that he was too weak for such a task, and that he feared Sauron. Then Manwë said that was all the more reason why he should go...

Hope that helps =)

Oh, and don't give me too much credit LOL... There's a lot that I know, yet, like you, totally space where I read it. A lot of times, I'll have to go searching for a source when a question like yours comes up =)

Cheers.
